It is possible.

When using GarageBand for this, GarageBand includes a send to iTunes option.

There is a free app via Apple's new App Store named Ringer for creating a custom ringtone with non-DRM protected music in your iTunes library, which creates your selected segment of a song to be used as a ringtone as a ringtone and placing the ringtone in Ringtones when selected under Library in the iTunes source list which also makes the ringtone available under the Ringtones tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. I believe the time limit for a ringtone is 40 seconds which is way more than enough. 30 seconds is more than enough so a ringtone does not need to be any longer than 30 seconds.

Then you are doing something wrong when creating the ringtone. A ringtone created properly will be available when selecting Ringtones under Library in the iTunes source list. And since this has nothing whatsoever to do with an iPhone - a ringtone that wasn't created properly, proof that having a CDMA iPhone has nothing whatsoever to do with this. Verizon exerts a lot of control over most of the phones on their network, but they don't have this much control.

I am about to go to NC to do it myself... running out of ideas...

Before you move m4r iPhone ringtones to iTunes 10 do the following two things:

1. Go to iTunes/preferences/general and make sure that "Ringtones" is checked.
2. Go to iTunes/preferences/advanced and "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library" is checked.

After do these you can go to the file/add to library and then you can found the files.

I am going to work on the AAC/m4f file some more.

m4f? I suspect that's your problem. All the instructions out there talk about renaming a .m4a (emphasis on the a). I'm not sure exactly what the difference is between an .m4f and an .m4a, but since it's not working for you, it would seem that the difference is significant for this purpose.

I still suspect it's the Verizon phone

It's interesting that you persist in believing this in the face of being told by at least one Verizon user that it works just fine. _It's not the phone!_

I can confirm that it is possible to add ringtones to a brand new Verizon iPhone.

But I was shocked to see that it's not possible to have a custom text tone. I get texts 99% of the time and have had a custom text tone on my last three cruddy phones. It's baffling to me that I can't do it on this one.

I really hope this is slated to change. I don't want to jailbreak just for this, but it's tempting.

I may just have to create a web page using capture and go step by step showing people how to create a custom ringtone and add it to their phone via iTunes. It is asked enough times in this forum and is wasting talent of those like Allan with over 56K posts. I am sure (j/k) 80% of those are ringtone and saying no to custom text sounds.

Maybe I'm completely ******** but here goes...
Step 1) custom ring tone in m4r added to itunes
Step 2) hooked up Verizon iphone to computer
Step 3) added said custom ring tone to DEVICES
step 4) hit SYNC

Nothing happens. I can't find the darned custom tone anywhere.

I even tried adding it to one of my PLAYLISTS then sync that playlist - the playlist worked but the custom m4r doesn't show up.

Help a handicapped person. I just want a my custom ring tone on my Verizon phone!

Maybe some step by step instructions????

thanks - those not as smart appreciate those that are!
