I just got the iPhone on Verizon and got everything set up yesterday evening. I have a .mac mail account and set that up automatically. My email is set to "Push" and I thought that would mean that I would get the email on my phone shortly after it was received on the server. The only way I get mail is when I open the mail app on the phone. Any ideas as to why this is and what can be done to correct this?
Just got back from the Genius Bar. Here's what I found out:
(Forgive the lack of detail. I'm not really well-versed with this stuff.)
Push should definitely work for .Mac accounts. (It worked on my iPod Touch while in the store.)
It can work with Gmail, if configured as "Exchange," or something. (Earlier posts had more info on that.)
I was told that even with these pre-order iPhones, there are plenty of complaints about this issue. Apple is aware of it. They are bracing (and Verizon no doubt is) for tomorrow's launch, and they expect many more complaints. According to my "Genius," they experienced similar push service problems when iPhone launched with AT&T. At that time, it took about a month before they got the kinks worked out. He felt that much had been fixed since those days, and he didn't expect the resolution to take so long this time around.
He said to give it a couple of days, and to come back in if I didn't see an improvement. His hunch was that the phone was fine, and that the problem was with the push service.
While he couldn't fix the problem on the spot, I was encouraged by a couple of things.
1. Apple knows there is a problem. Verizon, if they don't know now, will know soon enough.
2. The problem has happened before, and has been fixed before.
3. It's not a Settings issue.
4. Chances are, the phone itself is fine. If it isn't, they'll replace it.
I can confirm that push for gmail is not working on my ATT iPhone 4. There must be an error with the servers from all the new users coming online. ****.
I'm sure all the people posting the issue here had already known that.
I'm sure they don't. The vast majority here have less than 10 posts, meaning they may not know the difference between Push, Fetch, POP, IMAP, Exchange, etc. If they do, they generally post more than "my email doesn't work".
Glad to see (or rather not glad) that I am not the only one having these problems. I originally set my mail up as an Exchange account and PUSH did not work. I then changed it to IMAP (Activesync) and still did not work. Now after reading this post I am back to an Exchange account - STILL does not work. It appears to be broken. I hope Apple and Verizon get to the bottom of this. I am an original ATT iPhone customer and never had a problem with Push before (well maybe in the very beginning three years ago).
I will give it a few days to see what they do and then call to complain
Well, it's been interesting since yesterday. My phone is working properly and email is coming through without a hitch. Now my wife's phone, which worked fine yesterday, has stopped getting the mail pushed. She also has a @me.com account so it shouldn't be an issue. We'll see if anything changes overnight and if not, off to the store we'll go. I'll let you know how we make out.
I'm having the same problem everybody here is having. I have a .mac email account and a yahoo account and they both do not get pushed to my iphone. I live in California and I can without a doubt say at 7:41pm on Wednesday February 9th Verizon has not fixed this problem yet. If anybody has any updates please let me know. Not getting my emails is frustrating. I switched from a Blackberry where I was getting my emails immediately. Hopefully Verizon patches this soon.
Also, does anybody know if yahoo email servers have push?
It's always a relief to know I'm not the only one. I, too, have a Gmail account set-up through Exchange and another Gmail account set-up through the native email app. I expected true "push" on the Exchange-based account, but it's not happening with any consistency.
I've noticed that I'm only getting sporadic push notifications with the FB app, too. Could this be related or is this another issue entirely?
I'm having a similar problem to others here. I've got a iPhone CDMA that just arrived today - switched from my AT&T iPhone. Seems that connections to the Exchange server are VERY slow or nonexistent when roaming, but when connected via wi-fi, everything seems to be working just fine. This is a concern - perhaps Verizon's network isn't really setup properly to handle the type of data flowing just one day into the launch???
Had one email sent at 5:30 tonight - but it didn't arrive until 40 minutes later. I pressed the sync button (the curved arrow on the bottom of the mail screen) and it just kept reading "Connecting" with no change until I got home and connected to the wi-fi.
Also - for those switching, all of your settings may not come over, despite a restore from backup. In my case, all passwords and logins were missing.
BUT - the phone is so much better. Here's to hoping these are just early bugs.
