Push not working on Verizon iPhone

I just got the iPhone on Verizon and got everything set up yesterday evening. I have a .mac mail account and set that up automatically. My email is set to "Push" and I thought that would mean that I would get the email on my phone shortly after it was received on the server. The only way I get mail is when I open the mail app on the phone. Any ideas as to why this is and what can be done to correct this?

Thanks!

I'm noticing the Exchange problem seems worse (for me, at least) during peak times of the day. Don't know if it's regional either as a colleague of mine in Austin, TX (I'm in Los Angeles) says he's not experienced the same issue.

In the evenings it seems messages are coming through..sometimes faster than I receive them in Outlook.

The challenge, as far as pinpointing the problem, is the inconsistency. Sometimes it seems fine then it will just go into these long stalls in which I'm forced to interact with the phone, or with the mail app, to trigger an update. I'm actually having this problem with both 3G & WiFi / when I hook into WiFi with 3G on. Doesn't seem WiFi changes the behavior as far as I can tell.

Annoying but encouraging that they are aware of it and will hopefully be making changes on their end (either through the server / service or as an update - not sure how the "push" technology works) to address. Let's hope it doesn't take too long as I love the phone, otherwise.

Please keep posting anything you learn from reps of either Verizon / Apple.

You are correct. Push is not working. Looks like many are having this issue. I have both a MobileMe and gmail account and neither will update unless I open the mail app. Yes, I know my settings and have done resets. Setting up exchange is an option for gmail but can be a pain due to the issue with constantly running into the password needed issue if you have more than 1 device connecting to gmail.

Apple/verizon need to get this crap fixed

I agree...it does seem worse during business hours and I tend it sometimes hangs at "checking for email", other times once I already have an email and want to see the contents it will hang at "loading". In addition, it's definitely not pushing because when I wake up in the morning I don't see my emails from the evening before without opening the mail app.

This is especially frustrating because I am using Exchange with Verizon's $44.99 corporate data plan and the traditional Gmail (without push). Gmail is much more reliable than my Exchange.

Are all of you paying for the $44.99 plan, or are you paying for the $30? I'm curious what the difference is if your able to setup Exchange email with either plan, and both plans include unlimited data...

To update my message above...it appears things are working as of this morning. I just sent 2 emails to my Exchange mailbox and received them without opening the mail app both on wi-fi and 3g w/o wi-fi.

Are others seeing this problem fixed today? If so, do you have the corporate data plan? We'll see if it holds up during business hours.

Maybe you guys can help me. Does the Iphone ever get automatic pushes in terms of email. I set up my Gmail account through exchange and the gmail option. The emails dont come in on consistent basis. I switched from a blackberry and was used to my emails getting pushed right away.

Is the iphone capable of getting the gmail push right away or will I be forced to either check manually or get sparadic updates.

Thanks

Ok I got my Verizon Iphone on the 7th. So all week I have been trying to sort out this email Push issue out. I had a Blackberry so believe me I am equally frustrated but here is what I learned:

First the Iphone _*does not*_ "push" email unless it is coming from a "hosted exchange" email server. So those of you using a standard POP or IMAP account you will only get your email when you either click on the mail button at which point it will retrieve the mail or it will "fetch" the mail every 15 minutes (quickest setting). You can view this by simply going to "settings" > "mail, contacts, calendar" > "fetch new data" > "advanced" You will now see your email account(s) and how the email is getting to the phone. Note that your IMAP & POP email says "Fetch" not "Push" Bottom line: The IPhone 4 does NOT "Push" email like a Blackberry. Period!

Now how can you do a work around? This is what I have figured out. First, if you are using GMail you're in luck. Do NOT set up your email on the phone using the "Gmail" tab when adding an email account, if you did delete it and follow these instructions: Set it up using "Exchange" Here is how: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740 Now your calendar appointments and email will "push" to the phone and new appointments entered on the phone will update online. Here is the important trick: If you are using another email provider as I am you can "add" that POP or IMAP email account to your GMail account (in other words create a GMail account if you don't have one)now all your email accounts will push down to your phone. To sync your contacts simply use the I Tunes software under the phone > Info tab select "Gmail" as the sync option enter you Gmail info and it will upload the contacts to Gmail and now the exchange feature will auto sync your contacts. Get "Google calendar sync" if you are using Outlook and your appointments created in Outlook will sync to your Gmail calendar and the exchange will sync the appointments to your phone automatically.

Last the only other way to do this is to pay for an exchange hosted email account. Which, if you own a business with your own Domain with multiple email users as I do, it is a lot more expensive than POP or IMAP accounts. Google Business email will do it for $50 per user per year. Go Daddy was also the cheapest I saw. Look for "hosted exchange" email and your search will be over.

Enjoy or return to the Blackberry and eliminate this BS.

I'm actually noticing an improved performance today with Push for Exchange. Unlike the last several days, I'm actually seeing my phone recieve messages before they come in via Outlook. Hopefully this isn't a fluke and it's an indication that Verizon-Apple have sorted this Push issue out.

Not expecting BB data performance...that's clearly RIM's biggest asset; however, the type of data lag that were occurring Verizon's iPhone 4 was clearly some type of bug.

Will keep posting if the trend shifts back to performing poorly. Hopefully not!

That's interesting that a new phone made a difference. I'm curious, did the Genius Bar people seem to be aware that this was an issue for people?

My "PUSH" email notifications seem to be working somewhat better today. I'm hoping the issue gets resolved without me having to swap phones. I was going to stop by the local Apple store over the weekend, but I'm dreading it if I don't need to.

Not sure what you mean by "adding" other mail accounts to your Gmail account. If you have other email accounts and you forward them to your Gmail account it will then Push through your Gmail account.

You can have push email if you have an Exchange email account, a Gmail account set up as an Exchange account, a Yahoo push mail account or a MobileMe email account.

BB mail works differently and all mail is handled by RIM servers. You are correct when you say the iPhone (doesn't matter which model) doesn't push mail like a Blackberry, but neither does any other smartphone. But it still does push email.
