Push not working on Verizon iPhone

I just got the iPhone on Verizon and got everything set up yesterday evening. I have a .mac mail account and set that up automatically. My email is set to "Push" and I thought that would mean that I would get the email on my phone shortly after it was received on the server. The only way I get mail is when I open the mail app on the phone. Any ideas as to why this is and what can be done to correct this?

Thanks!

For those using inboxes with thousands of messages (read: gmail) ensure you do *not* have your accounts set to "no limit" under Mail Days to Sync. We have corporate Exchange 2010 and see repeated issues with push failing on iOS devices when *any* account (even user's personal accounts on the same device) are set to sync w/out limit. Keep in mind push is scanning your entire inbox for changes, when inboxes hits thousands of messages you are just asking for constant scanning, fast battery drain, and inevitable sync errors.

Use a more reasonable 2 weeks or 1 mo back timeframe and leverage iOS' built-in search capability to pull down messages from the server you need later on.
