ok so i've been reading too, if i go back to put in my 250 gb hard drive and run super duper and hit copy now to my external hard drive, (my external hard drive has all my music on it right now, it's a 350 gb external hard drive btw) so if i still have all the music by chance on my 250 gb hard drive will it just overwrite it when copying onto the new external instead of doubling up? also, i think i may have put the music on my 250 gb in the trash but not emptied it just so that it wouldn't read that when i did the first backup or attempt on super duper...

There is a Help menu in SuperDuper (and most all apps) and a well written PDF guide to help using and understanding use of SuperDuper.

Never a good idea to use a single drive for backups and cloning, not TimeMachine, not this. Some partition their drive to have partitions.

Always have one backup set that is not in use; that is off-line. That means a minimum two backup sets and switch between them.

Depends how you configured it.

There is also Disk Utility Restore and Carbon Copy Cloner.

thomas good point...

however guys, i'm just trying to put my 250 gb hard drive onto my now 500 gb hard drive using super duper... do i need to first copy my 250 gb hard drive to my external 350 gb hd in the super duper setup column and then after that's done, install the 500 gb hard drive, boot up with the external hard drive in, and then do the super duper thing over again?

Thing is, I'm not at all sure what it is that you're trying to do. If you're having trouble getting SuperDuper to work, that's a topic for SuperDuper support (or the SD forums). But if you've got a 500 GB hard drive with a fresh Mac OS X installation and you want to import your documents, settings, etc from the old 250 GB hard drive, you could either erase the 500 GB drive and clone to it from the 250 (again, how to do that would be a SD topic), or you could use Migration Assistant to import from the 250 into the new system on the 500.

If that doesn't help, you're going to need to be a little clearer about what you're trying to do.

Seems your replacing your 250 gig internal with a 500 gig drive.
Yes, clone to your external 350gig drive first. To clone your 250 gb drive to the 350 gb external drive, choose the 250 drive to copy from and the 350 drive to copy to. Choose backup all files and under options, choose smart update to make it like the original. Once the copy is complete, you will have a clone and then, you can boot from it. It should contain an exact copy of the original. Make sure it's working fine. Then replace the 250 with your 500 drive and clone it back to the new 500 gig drive.

thanks glenn... i really appreciate your help... the only problem i foresee is that i already tried copying and transferring with super duper and it stopped right in the middle so now i'm hoping i can still get everything from my 250 gb hard drive onto my external 350 hd and then hopefully to my 500 gb harddrive... thanks for your time and support guys... i'll keep you updated...

Are you saying that your internal drive has failed? Or is it that SuperDuper won't complete the copy?

If you can still boot from the main drive and all your info is still on it, then erase the external drive and reformat it with disk utility. Then make a new copy script with SuperDuper and redo it. Make sure your copy of SuperDuper is updated. I would make sure it was working properly before taking out the old drive.

no my 250 gb hard drive works fine, just ran out of space... when i ran super duper yesterday, i didn't really understand what i was doing... i made a new hard drive from disk image instead of putting it on my external hard drive where all my music is stored at currently for dj purposes... i'm afraid of letting superduper totally erase everything and then have it fail putting the music on my external hard drive with everything else...

that is why i first put all my music on my external, and then later on today i will open super duper on my 250 gb hard drive, and hit copy and erase on everything on that internal 250 gb hard drive with no worries becuz i already have music on my external if it failed to move it over in super duper mode...

OK, I think I understand.
You don't want to delete your music folder from your external drive.

Create a disk image of the 250gig drive using SuperDuper or Disk Utility. Place the image on the external drive. You can boot from your computer install disk and restore it to the new drive. Instead of installing OSX, choose disk utility from the menu and use the restore function to restore the disk image to the new drive. That will save you a lot of time on a new installation.

ok i'm just going to rephrase what you said to make sure i have this down pat...

i'm going to go under super duper on my 250 gb hard drive with my external 350 gb hard drive plugged in, and under that dialogue box in super duper i'm going to create a disk image that says dj kirk's hard drive...i'm going to take that white icon on my desktop that says dj kirk and drag it into my external hard drive... once that is done, i'm going to shut down, take out the 250 gb hard drive and put in my 500 gb hard drive with the external hard drive plugged in... once i turn on the macbook, i'm going to hold c down to take me to the installation menu, i'll need the original installation disc won't i? after that, i'll go to disk utility and finish off what you said... correct?

Correct. Copy the disk image of your 250gb hard drive to the external 350gb drive. Make sure SuperDuper is not set to erase the external. (from "dj kirk -250gig" to "disk image" - name it and choose destination external 350gig drive). That should create the image of the old hard drive. It should not affect your music stored on that drive.

Replace the 250 with 500 gig. Startup from original installation cd. Instead of installing OSX, choose Disk Utility from top menu. Use the restore function in Disk Utility to restore the image from the external drive to the new Hard Drive. Before restoring, check and make sure the new drive if formatted properly before doing the restore function. Once restored, go to system preferences, choose the startup disk and restart.
You should be on the new drive then and should be the same as before without the hassle of reinstalling, udating, and copying your info back.

Then, once everything is verified OK, you can delete the image off the external drive if you wish.

Let me know how it works.
