ur not going to believe this glenn, so last night i tried again, one of my last moves was to try to install everything back on the old hard drive cuz once before i got to the installation menu... success, ok, sigh of relief, atleast i got that... now, instead of holding down c all the time when the apple logo came up on the 500 gb hard drive i released it and, to my surprise i was able to get it to come up, have no idea how or why but it did... installed everything, transferred music over, so atleast now i have a 250 gb hard drive without the music on and my 500 gb hard drive that is now fully complete, well mostly complete again...

like i said before, i have no clue...didn't do much different than i already had been doing...but yeh, figured i'd let you know that.. 🙂

That hard drive should be fine. Your problems were not associated with one drive, but all drives and the CD player. You should not have a problem starting from the CD even if the hard drive was bad.
I assume the 500 gig drive is what you have installed now for the startup drive. Is it working properly. Does it boot up OK after you shut down. If so, then you should be OK.
When booting from the CD, it's normal to hold the c key down until the Apple Logo comes up. Then, let it go. I can't explain why it didn't work before. It could be something else is failing on your computer.

If everything is running OK for now, then you may use disk utility to repair permissions. Run software update and make sure everything is updated. Then, run disk utility and repair permissions again. Also, verify that the hard drive is OK. If you have no errors, then you should be fine.

Hope it not a problem that will come again. You still have the 350gig external drive. It's smaller than the 500, but as long as the 500 is using less than 350 gig of space, you can make a clone. I would take the opportunity to make a complete clone of the startup drive to the external with SuperDuper. If you don't want a complete clone, at least make a copy of your user folder with SuperDuper and keep it updated with the smart update feature in case a problem reoccurs. At least then you will have the ability to clone the drive back to it a new computer or be able to migrate your files back from a user folder. All your music should be in your user folder, so either way that will be backed up.

yup, using the 500 gib internal right now, shut down, load up, everything is fast and on time, ran verify disk, said disk appears to be ok, so therefore no need to run repairs as far as i know... thankful for it...

but yeh, even if i did put everything on an external drive such as super duper, i still couldn't boot up from that could i, lets say this happened again where i couldn't do the install discs...

however, when i do super duper, i have a mac friend an hour and a half away that i will most definitely take it to to make sure i got it down pat this time...

One of the big advantage of making a clone with SuperDuper is the fact that you can boot from it. When you make the clone and do it properly, it's an exact copy of your startup disk. If your main drive fails, you can startup from it. You just have to select it from system preferences as the startup disk and reboot. There is also a command at startup ( "hold down the option key at startup) that will bring up a screen to let you choose the startup disk before the computer boots up fully.
And choosing the smart update feature and doing regular backups will take little time and assure you of an updated clone.

If you have files you can't loose, then you need to have a backup. This is a great way to do it. In the future, you should get a backup drive at least twice the size of the startup disk to handle it and allow for future growth. At should at least be the same size as the startup drive.
