Well, I doubt that it's a hard drive failure. Probably has more to do with the installation process.

Start back up from the installation disk. Open up disk utility, select the drive and verify if the hard disk is OK. If it needs repairing, then repair it. Repair permissions.

IF the hard drive shows OK, then you will probably just have to reinstall OS again. Don't erase the drive if your user account is there and you don't want to reinstall everything.

If you just want to start fresh and you have your music saved on the other drive, then just erase and reformat the 500 gig startup drive and install OSX. Then you will have to create your user account and install everything once again. After everything is done, you can replace your music.

Once you get it back up and running, go to the Apple website and download the latest combo update to your computer and update from there instead of using the software update. Once that is done, you can open up the software update and update anything else from there.

Your info shows your running Leopard 10.5

If the link doesn't work, go to the apple site, support forum and search for combo update. Choose the one for your operating system.

Verify that you have the correct Installation CD that came with your computer.

Shut down the computer with the power button for a few minutes with the install cd inside. When you restart, hold the "c" key down to boot from the CD.

See if that works.

Addition: Open and read the link below.

hey, so i try the target disk thing by holding t on my old hard drive and i actually get to the installation menu, no success for the 500 gb hard drive tho...

however,on my 500 gb hard drive, i run command s, and i'm able to type in a few scripts to see if my hard drive is ok, it shows dj kirk hard drive is ok...however, in command v i can't type anything in there, and in command v it showed file system modified...

so all i'm hoping is this can lead u to some answers, whether my macbook is competely gone, or bad hard drive, or something, etc...

Sorry, but I don't think I can help you from here.
You can't boot from the hard drives or CD. Swapping drives is really a useless point at this time. It wouldn't matter even if the hard drives were bad, you would still be able to boot straight from the install CD by holding the down the "c" key while starting up. That by-passes the hard drives. Since you can't even boot from the CD, something else major is going on. If you read the link I sent, it gave you specifics to try.
The only thing we didn't pursue is the memory ram . Maybe one of your ram sticks is bad.
And, you never said weather or not you tried safe boot, but that probably didn't work either.

Maybe one of the super gurus on the board might chime in to give better advise than I am capable of.

Other than that, I really believe you should bring your computer to an apple store and get some professional advise. Could be something simple, or could be something major.

Anyway, Good Luck
Either way, let us know the outcome.
