Oh, I was waiting for this..
Here's the proof.
Search "ipad speaker stereo" on YouTube. Watch the first video in the results.
The ipad speaker system IS stereo. I proved it.
Looling forward to your response.

It would be foolish to make them true stereo because they're much too close to one another. The listener would still hear mono.
The reason they make the two speakers stereo, even though they are right next to eachother is to avoid compression artifacts when playing back low bitrate mp3 files. Playing these files back in true mono can sound horrible. My experiment shows without a doubt that the two speakers in the ipad are actually stereo. Search on YouTube for "ipad speakers stereo". There's no doubt, and you can do this yourself to prove it.
Cheers

I've read it both ways... some say it is stereo, some say it isn't. Doesn't really matter to me... it sounds fine for what it was designed for. If I wanted better sound, I'd connect external speakers.
Agreed.
Here's the link. Just trying to inject knowledge. Thanks for your input.
Okay. Though it's pretty much useless with the speakers being so close together. I'd think they could improve battery life (somewhat) with a single speaker and not having to process stereo.
FYI:
Speaker is = singular
Speakers are = plural
The WiFi-only iPad STILL does not have GPS!
I'm sure that the people that worked on the audio for the ipad realized that playing low bitrate mp3s (128 kbs) through a single mono speaker would reveal compression artifacts. Splitting it up in stereo between two speakers, even placed close together, would be enough to avoid that problem, and allow them to design future ipads for stereo without changing any circutry.

It's stereo GPS, but they are so close together, you think you're only in one spot. đ

Thank you for that GPS information. I did read the entire thread and understand how it works now. I started a new thread about the stereo speakers in the ipad. If you take your home stereo speakers and put them right next to eachother, it sounds like mono. But the system it still outputing stereo. That was my point. People were saying that the speaker(s) in the ipad are mono. Not true.
I just found out that the iphone 4 does NOT have GPS! Just joking!
Cheers guys.

A speaker can be a box with more than one "driver" inside. When we talk about a speaker that is part of a stereo system or home theater, it can contain a woofer and tweeter, both are drivers that make up a speaker system or cabinet. But I see your point.

My, how far we've drifted off course in this thread without GPS ...
