Go for the 3G/4G... it's really handy and the device will be worth more when you sell it.
it is not actually tracking via gps, it is tracking via the WAN ip of the network the ipad it is connected to.
The assisted gps in the iOS devices, by the way, are what make them so much better than the competition too. Always able to pinpoint my location due to it.

Because you asked.

so one more minor correction ... satellites do not actually transmit lattitude and longitude information to a GPS receiver.
One minor correction: Latitude. Two L's.
Erm... how about two Ts.
thanks - I was way off.
No worries. There's a lot of confusion on this topic, thus the replies you got. 😉
I have no idea since you can't connect to any satellites or cell towers.

Apple is missing a great potential use of the iPad.
No it's not. iPads have been available with GPS since iPad 2. One just has to NOT buy the wifi only version.
"iPads have been available with GPS since iPad 2."
That would be since iPad 1.
Yep, the iPad 1 WiFi + 3g model definitely has GPS.
I can't believe that this thread has gone on for so long. Just unbelieveable!
