Army Knowledge Online (AKO)

I'm in the Ohio National Guard, and when I'm not drilling I am a Graphic Designer for my normal job. When I came into contact with AKO I said to myself "well this feels like Army". I have never seen such a terrible network site as AKO. They try to do so much but you can tell its just a bunch of nerds setting up and overwhelmingly secure website and they never thought "Hey will this even be user friendly?" For the level of traffic this system gets its amazing the lack of quality this thing has. I wish that the high and mighty "leaders" of this thing would send this to Apple to do their magic. Apple has shown you can get all the security without compromising Elegant Design, Costumer Service, and Ease of Use. This is a cry from the lower working soldier to Apple... It works for me.

Sample of what it says. (there was more)

Soldiers want major changes to Army Knowledge Online — changes the Army says may not be coming

Soldiers hate AKO. That was clear when Army Times asked users of Army Knowledge Online what they think about the Web portal.

Their frustration was evident in more than 70 e-mails from Army active-duty, civilian and retired users.

The most common complaints:

• AKO is frustratingly slow.

• It has a cluttered interface.

• Its security features are too cumbersome.

• Its search engine is useless.

For many, that adds up to a decision to avoid AKO whenever possible.

Tuttle's link works fine for me, but try the direct link rather than the cached version:

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/11/army-soldiers-officials-disagree-on-army-k nowledge-online-112810w/

In any case, there's nothing Apple can do from their end. It's up the Army to decide to redesign the AKO, and if they ever do, I doubt that Apple would respond to an RFP since Apple's not in the web design business.

Regards.

PVT King,

I am one of the "high and mighty 'leaders'" at AKO and am interested in hearing about your specific problems. What is it about AKO that is not easy to use? How would you like to see AKO be more Apple-like? What quality is lacking?

For those of you who like to point to the Army Times article, the Army Times based their assessment on 70 responses, all of which they will not share. How many of the 70 were truly complaints? AKO has 2.4 million users. Army Times has 120,000 readers. Getting me and two of my buddies to say Army Times stinks would be the same as them getting 70 to say AKO stinks (and they have yet to show how many of the 70 actually complained)...

AKO truly values feedback from its users and I invite anyone who has ideas and suggestions on how to make it better, to submit them in any of the several feedback options on AKO. Every page has a submit feedback link and there is a "Tell CPT AKO" option to share your thoughts and opinions. And don't forget the many blogs, polls and discussion forums that exist for this very purpose. I would ask that you consider using these AKO mechanisms as they are more closely followed than a public website such as this...

Thanks.

Hi, fritterdog -

This is a peer to peer forum for Mac users and owners, and we do the best we can to help other Mac users in any way possible.

Posting a link to an article on the same subject as the Private was asking about was not meant as a reflection on the Army, the Army Times, or the AKO. It was only intended to demonstrate that his issue is shared with others who have access to the AKO.

Glad you found this topic and are interested in following up with the user who posted it!

Good luck!

Please forgive me if I came off a little rude. It just stems from the frustration I'm having. To give you an idea I HAVE to take these classes which I'm sure you know of. Ones like the thumb drive class all soldiers have to take. Well I have a few of them to take but I have to log onto ako to take them. I don't have a cac reader so I have to type in my password. I don't log on to ako very much so it's hard for me to remember my password because of the must be 10 character long, 2 upper case, 2 numbers, and 2 special characters. I guess I could write it down but that would defeat the point. So now that I can't remember my password I have to reset it. I can't just get an email sent to my personal email to remind me. So I go to reset it I type in my user name then hit send but when I click on send nothing happened I'm sure it's because I'm on a Mac. So then I have to find a pc somewhere to reset password. I'm sure there is some setting somewhere where all I have to do is this thing and it will work.... Bla bla bla. No! It should just work! Don't even get me started with mypay.... Or even medical records. I was hurt in basic training went to the doctor in ait and was supposed to be given a LOD form sent to me after I left but the sergeant never sent it. Now I'm stuck and have no way of proving it. So now I have to pay for my MRI. I tried going onto ako and looking up medical records but it's just to complicated and I gave up. The thing about it is, it would be one thing if AKO was optional but it's not. As a US Army Soldier we are all required to be on it and use it. That's why when they say things like "we have over 900,000 logins daily so people must be liking it"... That's because we don't have a choice we have to use AKO. If we are going to be made to use it then make it usable! The graphics are just simply terrible! I'll give you that it has a lot of features and does a lot, but does it do it well? As I said in my earlier post Apple has shown you can get all the security without compromising Elegant Design, Costumer Service, and Ease of Use. Key one ease of use.

A huge thing for us would be when we see the leadership try to say it's great when we all know it's not. We can understand funding maybe low or this or that but when you try to defend it, it makes us feel like it will never be better if the leadership won't recognize that it has huge flaws, then we aren't ever going to change it.

Thanks for listening...

Hi, I have found a similar problem on resetting passwords on ako, I was using firefox and experienced the same "nothing happens" tried safari on the mac and it worked without a hitch.

I for one grudgingly accept the hoops you have to jump through to use ako, there is a ton of personal information on there and I would hope it is secured with the highest possible measures which may account for some of complaints about ako. If I may offer this, before Ako there was NO interface for soldiers at all, I think we take for granted that we can now log in an obtain copies of awards, NCOERS, etc. I think it is a great system, the fact that multi-billions were spent on a replacement that they could not get to work as effectively (DIMMRS) speaks volumes.

Anyway, try Safari if you haven't and from one to another thanks for your service.

It's not just AKO, it is the mypay also. I am retired and tried logging into myPay to change my address, haven't used it in years, so don't have the password any longer, nothing. Sent an email to the help address, still waiting and it has been a month. Haven't had a chance to follow up on it since I have been busy at work. But the interface is hard to use and the support appears non-existent. Hopefully fritterdog will come back and weigh in again.

Tried the direct link and also tried to register as a new user and it kept looping me back, saying I had an account setup already. That part hasn't bothered me as much as not getting a response from the help desk.

When things slow up a bit at work, I will work on it again. It is OK for now, since my mail goes to my parent's house, which was my home of record before I retired.
