In which way?

A new version comes out when it's ready, and whenever it's released, some users will say that should have waited and fixed more bugs first, while others will say that it should be released earlier.

Hopefully, it Logic 10 comes some time this year, and hopefully it's quite stable.

Have you seen Cubase 6? even Cubase 5 had a melodyne type editor. Logic is touted as the best DAW for midi, and I agree with that but midi is starting to take a back seat as we are moving into the age where we are able to manipulate actual audio files as if they were midi. Of course there is always going to be a significant place for midi, I find Logic fun to use and when they do finally catch up and include a new feature they do it the best as far as ease of use. But they always seem to be a few years behind bringing features that other DAWS already have.

That works both ways - there were plenty of features that Logic came out with first, and took some years for other DAWs to copy/implement, like track freezing, remote processing, comprehensive onboard full instrument suite, large built in sample library content, 64-bit, quick swipe comping etc etc.

Bottom line is, no release is ever going to satisfy everybody, in terms of timing, outstanding bugs, new features and the way new features are implemented, workflow etc etc.

None of that is an excuse to not be able to make great music, though.

Something NEEDS to happen with Logic soon. All that's really happened in the last 2 years are a set of incremental updates and a port to 64-bit. Logic is still a great platform, but its effectively stuck where it was in version 7. The core virtual instruments haven't changed in years, other than becoming surround capable and 64 bit. EXS-24 used to be actually quite cutting edge, but now? Sometimes it seems that the idea of creativity and functionality gets confused with content - I'm certain that amp models and 30GB of loops is appealing to the home user, but I think most musicians are constantly looking out for new creative tools, and Logic really isn't delivering any.

New ways of working have emerged. Much as I have derided it over the years, Cubase really caught up in v5 and in many ways overtook Logic in V6. The sound engine is better, it doesn't still include nearly 10 year old EQ algorithms and the advancements in MIDI control are amazing. Ableton has the cool pattern-based sequencing that was what set Creator apart. Logic really needs a big shakeup to stay feeling vital, not just more content and another truckload of presets. And I really hope they do it, because while Logic is still an excellent platform, its no longer creative giant in the pack.

64 bit is huge. PT and DP still aren't 64 bit and who knows when they will be.

Based on the previous release schedule, L10 will probably appear in summer or fall, so I'm not sure why people are getting all worked up right now. Not to mention that 10.7 is scheduled for release this summer so it would be much preferable to get a logic release after that with compatibility and support for new features than releasing before and being out of date within a month or two.

It's quite obvious that if Logic 10, Lion, and FCS 4 are not released within the next 3 months, Apple will fail as a company, our iPad 2's will stop working and we will all have to throw them into the garbage, all Mac's will crash permanently, and go back to cutting film negatives, composing with hand written sheet music, and using hand held Radio Shack calculators that don't do square root functions. I mean, come on guys, isn't it blatantly obvious?

No comment on Logic 10, they've been busy with related projects, I'm sure it will arrive in a few months and be very cool.

One thing I'll say about the Yamaha purchase of Steinberg... it's been good for the company, seems to have given them a lot of freedom and they're coming up with several interesting ideas. Cubase 7 is under development and promises to be a big jump.

People forget that it was Steinberg that came up with the whole virtual studio technology, low latency streaming, virtual instruments....etc. The Arrange page you see in Logic was taken directly from Cubase.

The two companies have traded (err... copied 🙂 ideas back and forth for many years.

Yeah - that's absolutely right, going back to the time we were running stuff on an Atari, Cubase definitely lead the way as far as the graphic interface goes, which was a really important consideration at the time.

The decision to come over to Logic was, for me, because I was unhappy with Wiindows as an OS, after experiencing the stability of UNIX based systems as part of my working/earning money experience.

I understand that... I never really had a problem with Windows machines, I've set up a couple of dozen audio machines for studios over the years... it definitely takes more effort but I have a database of solid hardware and OS tweaks that pretty much makes it a no brainer to get a solid system.
XP and Win-7 make good systems for audio and Cubase actually runs better on a PC although they've really been working on bringing the Mac version to that level.

In fact I'm typing this on a tri-boot PC and one of the installed OS can run Logic 9.1.3. cough... but it's mainly for a fun experiment.

I've been a little worried that OSX is becoming top heavy, it seems some are having problems with the latest OSX update.

LOL! Appreciate the humor. Really! And the point is well taken! LOL!

Except. . . some of us are actually STILL composing music using the 'ol pencil to manuscript (sheet music) method. It's a rather nice way to compose interesting, well thought-out music. 🙂

Anyway. . . I'm happy with my current set-up. It's a very stable system right now! (Knocks on wood.) So, if/when Logic 10, Lion and FCS 4 comes around, it'll probably be quite a while before I update/upgrade (IF I update/upgrade). However, with all of my instrumental libraries (including the memory-hog orchestral libraries) living in "64-bit land" now, I'll probably double my RAM soon! 😀

Man, I hope and pray they copy Cubase's track folders for Logic v10. I soooo want to be able to do simple drag-and-drop stuff with tracks like in Cubase. Logic is waaaaay behind in this dept. (so much so I had to go back to Cubase because organizing my Logic sessions was becoming too much of a chore, in comparison)

(Also... why do we need to double-click to access inserts and sends in Logic? I mean... talk about carpal tunnel madness...)

Em, that kind of editing is a gimmick --and very rarely usable in real production. It's even less useful than T-Pain style autotune (that at least has made a bunch of hit records). Even so, if you really have a need for it and want the best solution of that kind, you wouldn't use Cubase 6, but Melodyne itself, which, last time I checked, runs inside Logic just fine.

The serious stuff in music production is what it has always been: audio recording and editing, effect professing, virtual instruments, midi editing and automation etc... Regarding all the above, none of the big DAWs is really "further behind the curve" than any other, really...
