new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping wireless connection

Just looked throught this part of the forum and found out there are a lot of people out there which seem to have the same problem as me.

I purchased a new modell 2011 MBP on the very first day from our apple store.
At home, sitting directly beside the wireless router I didn´t noticed anything wrong.
I have got beside of the Mac OS a bootcamp Prt. with Windows 7 on it and everythign works fine so far.

Five days after purchased I started traveling on business and at present we are for some weeks in Melbourne. Were having a wireless connection in our appartement and here I have got massiv problems with my connection.

We are having altogether four windows mashines with us, my IPad, my Iphone, another HTC smartphone, and my new Macbook.

All the other devices connecting to our room wireless without problems. The net strengh is not fantastic but the other devices bringing it up to four bars on the windows wireless symbol in the task bar. None of the other computers where ever loosing the connection.

Only my macbook can not make it over three bars and its going on and off. Donwloads fail freuquently because the conection is interrupted more than one times..
In my opinion this problem is even worse on the Windows OS and a bit better but far away from beeing good and acpetable on the Mac Os.
I hope its only a driver issue and there is no hardware problem with the new mashine. Other than this I love the new notebook and I am very satisfied with its performance.

Iphone 4, Ipad 1 ,Macbook pro 13, I 5, 8GB, early 2011, Windows 7, Mac OS

Surely the people that work at apple must be using these machines themselves in store by now ? Went to the london genius bar two weeks ago and they were using pre thunderbolt macbook pro's and wouldn't get the new ones themselves "for a while" - the only thunderbolts in store were for display or sale. Still imagine a one to one session in store :

" I'm sorry the internet connection seems a little rough today.....please bear with me........just one sec.....hmmmm.....I'll try switching networks......DARN......anyone know how to fix this thing ? "

Doesn't exactly do what it says on the tin does it ? probably why they sell 'em in boxes.....

Doesn't take a wise man to point out patience is key (note).

Good morning,

Needed a moment to find my thread...the new structure...if there is any at all left is not very comfy to find your way around her in the support forum, I find....

News from my side....

Back home in Bavaria, back in our 32 MB Net. MacBook does not drop connection not on Bootcamp not on Mac OS Becuase of the strong link. if you look on the wireless symbol everything looks fine.

BUT

- Doing the ping test shows same horrible result like everywhere else before. Ping is going up and down, shows tomeouts.

-Downloads are very very slow considering our net speed.

-Streaming absolute NOT possible.

My old Fujitsu T4215 and all the other Wndows Mashines my husband uses in our net are working without any kind of problems...but we know this already, don't we????

I was visiting our local Apple supplier yesterday, with the paperworks about the work which was done on my MacBook in Melbourne, change of Networkcars, wihtout any change to the better.

Her suggested to call apple and tell them to change the logiboard next and so I did!!!! On Monday I will bring my MacBook to the apple store. Than it gets send in and I have to live ten days wihtout it.... fantastic....

Will keep your informed if it helps....I have got my doubts BUT what wcan we do...

What I forgot.

I brought an Apple TV from Melourne. Yesterday afternoon we were setting it up. works very good and is exactly what I wanted to stream my Photos on the big TV Screen.

BUT it does not work with my new Macbook. The instable wireless network link of the MacBook makes it impossible to stream any movie from ITunes or to stream Photos of my MacBook Harddrive....

That's soooooooo frustrating!!!!!!,

Luckily the apple TV works fine with any kind of windows machines and so I can us it with my good old Fujitsu.

Sometime I ask myself why did I buy a new notebook???????

Hope to get finally a solution now...

Hi Lara

Unfortunately I think the replacement of the motherboard / logicboard won't resolve this. I'm of the firm belief that this is a software issue (which itself is actually reassuring for everyone with the issue I guess - since it should be able to be fixed with an update), but it probably means you're without your Macbook for no reason whilst they do this 😟.

Given that there are a number of people reporting that there are no issues in Windows 7 (via bootcamp) then the issue has to be in OS X.

Thankfully mine appears to have settled down a bit since playing more with the wireless channels and also re-positioning the router. However, the wireless is still weaker than the old Macbook and the ping rates are atrocious, which appears to manifest itself more when copying files across the network, rather than surfing the internet.

However, my Internet connection is 'only' 15Mbit, it may be more noticeable on a much faster connection. I still hit 1.7MB per second downloads (which is what I find on the other machines in the house).

Good luck with yours anyway and let us know how you get on.

Miles

Good evening,

I am not convinced that a exchange of the Logicboard does the trick. But what chance do I have???? I cant tell Apple not to do it when they find it the only way to resolve the problem...And I want a solution!. I dont want to sit here and wait and write in threads until one of the companie finds it necessary at all to confess that there is a fault and maybe in another six month tells you, there is a recall as all of the Networkcard/ Logicboards or whatever are faulty...I would think an Software or firmware bug should be resolved by now!

When An item has got Three times the same fault, you can give it back...thats part of the warranty rules in Germany. So I have to give them another chance. If its coming back still without a working wirelss I will definitiv give it back.

My good old Fujitsu still does its Job and my money can sleep safely on the bankaccount until I am absoultey sure, that this issue is resolved. Than I would by another Macbook. But until then:

Let other people go trough the pain. I am fed up! My brandnew Macbook should not be an Test object.

BTW, yesterday afternoon we visited Media Markt down here...big electronics Warehouse. They had three Macbooks on display and they were connected to the wireless. Pinged two of them to google, com.

One was worse behaving than mine..pings between 45 and 800!!!!!!!!!!!

The other one was fine, pings all about 60.

Short before going out the the shop I thought: I did not look if they were both the new modell.

And???? As expected, the one which worked fine was an 2010 Modell, the other one the early 2011....

Oh yes and before I forget... Miles.

Forgot about network in windows seven works better...

My wireless is even worth in bootcamp/ windows 7 and this was like this everywhere, were we have been in the last weeks. The Windows drivers seem to me even more sensitve agains drop outs of the conection. In OS you dont loose the net so often. What does not mean that you are faster on the way or you can stream better... Just you dont have to re connect so often in OS!

KInd regards Lara...rather frustrated...love my Macbook but it seems to me we have to divorce again....

Apr 17, 2011 10:25 AM in response to LaraJones

I would like to join the list...

Got my MBP 15" almost 2 weeks ago, I cans still give it back, but I'm not sure I should...

Ping respons as described in this thread, as opposed to a 2007 mac pro just next to it that has normal results; that said, the problem is mostly scientific since everything seems to function normally, except for a somewhat slow connection...

Will be happy to hear of an update that solves this... if it isn't hardware...

Apr 17, 2011 6:10 PM in response to JT34554

Hi JT, yeah I did the security update yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately it made no difference for my particular Macbook (i.e. ping rates still the same, connection speeds variable etc.)

What latency do you consider as 'normal'? Since I'm still seeing wildly varying delays between 4 & 120ms.

For me on my home network normal is under 5ms.

Apr 17, 2011 11:44 PM in response to MilesR

Did the security update this morning BUT no change...

I hoped so much it would have done it as I have to take my Macbook to the Apple Store now to have the logicboard exchanged...

Talked to the hotline just before... Business as usual...nobody ever heard of a problem like this....

Kind regards of Lara, a very sad and frustrated Macbook owner...

Have to do a photo Job at the easter weekend and now..I have to use my old yellow screen Fujitsu Tablet to control the pictures.. GREAT...its exactly what you imagine after buying an expensive piece of Apple technic especially for this purpose...

Apr 18, 2011 9:35 AM in response to TomB01

TomB01,

GJBenn85 here, for some reason I cannot access my old account since Apple updated the forum. Maybe I've been blocked for suggesting OS X is the problem, haha.

I tested the pings under Windows 7 and there were no loss of packets, with the average ping time being 20-25 ms vs. up to 80 ms under OS X with packet losses.

Don't really know what else to say other than people need to wait for software updates. IMO, there is zero evidence it is a hardware or even driver problem. On one hand, this is good news; the fix should be relatively simple if Apple will formally recognize the problem exists under OS X. On the other hand, if you prefer using OS X then I am afraid you are at the mercy of Apple in recognizing and fixing the problem.

My replacement MBP outperforms the MBP it replaced by a long shot. I think my first computer had a lot of problems. Could not even access my wireless internet in my family room 25' from the router with the original computer; I now can with a full 5 bars (per Windows).

If using Windows is not a resolution for you, contact Apple Care direct rather than going through an Apple Store. At some point they will have to acknowledge a problem exists if they keep replacing or repairing computers for the same problem.

I just wanted to add to this post.

I too am having the ping problems with the early 2011 Macbook Pro 15". I am running 10.6.7 with all updates installed. I have purchased a new router to make sure that it is not a problem.

Here are my ping results sitting about 12 foot from the router using wireless.
