new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping wireless connection

This is 2 meters away from a brand new airport extreme. Under windows 7 on the same machine I get 1-2ms so in my case at least it seems to be OSX specific. Anyone else tried under Windows?

My router doesn't have the capability, but has anyone tried to use 802.11n at 5GHz? The reason I ask is because of this article:

Tried the www.speedtest.net website that a few guys have used on here, I'm getting the same 10meg download on both my Mac Pro ( on 10.5.8 ) and my new ( replaced ) MacBook Pro ( on 10.6.7 ).

After running the speedtest, noticed they also have www.pingtest.net which I tried too - this gave me an A grade "An excellent result ! Expect all internet connections to work very well assuming you have sufficient bandwidth" The stats were 0% packet loss, 34ms Ping ( assume thats an average ) and 6ms for Jitter ( read pingtest.net for that one ).

Its just taken 15 minutes to download the 10.6.7 combo updater on the Macbook Pro at 1.1mb/sec, which was just shy of 1GB in size.

Then I ran a ping test from network utility and the results are same as everyone's ( and the same as display models in the London and Bluewater stores....) :

20 packets transmitted, 20 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 22.826/61.599/114.875/29.703 ms

I'm hoping this may have some relevance to more the more tech minded users on here, speedtest.net shows an A-Grade for ping test, network utility shows another story...... are the two tests similar ? Pingtest.net says it looks for the best server to ping, and I used google.com in the Network Utility Ping Test.

I don't use windows or bootcamp so can't add any comparisons there.

I was starting to think that the new Apple Support Community was just so the users of this thread couldn't find it anymore ( seems you need to reapply to receive e mail notifications on this thread ).

The the cynical side of me wondered if it being easter and all we would get software updates appearing like the resurrection and our wifi / pings and networking would breathe life again ?

The first thing I tried was switching to my 5ghz N network.

It works just as badly ping wise as it does on 2.4ghz.

I am getting sick of the lag, makes doing daily work that much more annoying.

Same problem here. Early 2011 macbook pro 15" i7 4gb etc..

Wireless connecton drops randomly. All other devices work ok, 1 macbook (late 2009) iphone 3gs, ipad + windows machines.

I have got the same problem with my MBP 15" bought just 10 days ago. The wireless connection drops randomly and it makes it impossible to stream anything when it needs to buffer or restart every minute.

The strange thing for me is that it works fine at the University. Could it be that the connection to the router here is stronger? Probably the speed isn´t as high as it should be but at least good enough to handle the daily work.

Could a solution for me be to buy a router that works better with my mac?

A friend of mine bought his MBP one week before me and he hadn´t experienced any problem with his. Then I asked him to do the ping test and it demonstrated that the connection were just as instabile as for everyone else here. But why doesn't his internet drop randomly like mine? He can also stream everything without any problem and says that this doesn't disturb him because everything he does work's fine enough even if internet is a bit slower than on his old PC.

And why does mine work "well enough" at the university?

What would happend if i bought a better router?

Need to decide until friday wether to keep this machine or not...

When you said randomly, it needs some time to get it happened, it's a bit tricky and that's how Apple can still pretend everything is fine. it's not something you and myself can easily reproduce with our knowledge. Be patient, he will get it eventually.

The way workaround this problem for me now is to change my router mode from 802.11b/g/n to 802.11g only, SO FAR I can still call it a workaround but I have to say this should not be happened, every devices in my house work perfectly with default router settings excpet MBP 2011 and I can't and not supposed to touch any others router except that one sitting in my room.

I will keep you guys posted if I got another drop again.

I have the same issue here. I went to the Apple Store and the guys at the Genius Bar told me that Apple is aware of this problem and that a fix is on the way in the next software update.

Adding my record to this list, with a MBP 15" 4gb i7. I'm getting dropout about every 2 minutes sometimes. This is my first Apple after about 20 years. Very aggravating, not-to-mention expensive at $3,000.00. I pray it's just a software fix. APPLE, LET'S GO ALREADY.

Glad to hear they are finally acknowledging this issue! I am done messing with my router and airport settings, lets just wait for this software update!

Hi MAC4TECH - I'm not suggesting that they didn't say it, but I'm quite surprised at their admission that there's a fault, given their normally tight-lipped attitude about such things. However, let's hope it's a step in the right direction!

Mine was working well enough up till today (transmission rates around 70ish Mbps and no dropouts etc.)

However, it's now down to 25-52Mbps and very slow transfers (but still no dropouts).

Looking forward to a fix.

Okay almost two months now and no word from Apple on this ... Yeah ... I'm super frustrated ... I can't skype .... cant browse properly (1/5 times the page fails to load or gets stuck until I hit refresh again) ... I can't use internet at all on Bootcamp Win7. Pings going wild on OS X .... and geniuses ... well they are not so genuius afterall !

Is it possible to return my MBP ... the 14 day return period has passed ... but I did register my case with Apple Support within the 14 days ?

Until Apples takes this seriously , and atleast gets in touch with its troubled customers about the problems in their products I guess we have nothing to do but be dissapointed !

Is anyone using the Apple Airport Extreme base station??? wondering if buying one of these will help...ment to susport 300mbps transfer :s

Installed Windows 7 in bootcamp, ping times are normal.

So it's probably a driver issue in Mac OS X.
