MacBook trackpad won't 'click'

Hey everyone,

I have a early white MacBook whose battery's status is "Replace Now" and i can move my cursor around, but it wont perform a 'click' at all. However, I connected my magic mouse and it was able to also move the cursor, but it still did not click. I reset my PRAM to see if that would do it any good. So upon restarting I didn't touch my trackpad and only used my mouse and I had my 'click' action back...problem solved right? NOPE!...the minute I touched the trackpad I lost the 'click' action. Can anyone tell me what is going on and is there anyway I can solve this problem without taking it to a store?

I also have the same model MacBook in black, whose battery won't charge at all, yet I still can click with my trackpad. Does this rule out the possibility of it being a battery problem?

Thank you! I did the first three things exactly -- the same. I could move the cursor but couldn't click on my account icon -- I then hooked up my desktop mouse and still the same outcome. I read where you written it was the wireless in your bag and just remembered mine was in my computer bag -- and I left it on. Thanks again for this post.

I just had a white 2006 MacBook given to me that had this same problem. I was able to fix it by just giving it a fresh Operating System (Leopard) install. Problem solved. I hope this helps someone.

I am having problems with my track pad on my 09 Macbook Pro. It will stop clicking then the cursor disappears. Seems to get worse the more windows I have open. I have to use the escape key, close windows and then i get the cursor back, then the track pad works again. Any ideas?

Thank you SO MUCH for this.... I had the issue as well, and thought "what are the odds, no way, too easy". Lo and behold, I went into my office (three rooms away, mind you) and my wireless trackpad (which I previously thought was dead) was hidden under a stack of magazines and being pressed.

Gotta love community info sharing! 🙂

Thank you SO much - this is EXACTLY what was happening to me - a magic mouse in my laptop bag was turned on and preventing my trackpad from clicking. I tried everything and was beginning to feel insane. THANK YOU!
