Same issue - ever since I upgrade ATV firmware to latest yesterday. Will keep looking for solution.
My issue is similar but different. Home sharing for me drops out at some point during the night, and does not reconnect until I shut down and restart itunes. Once I do this, all three of my apple tv's stay connected solid throughout the day. It does not drop out again until the late night/early morning.
I have tried disabling antivirus and firewall. Also, my Not sure what is going on here...
You have the same problem as me. Some period of inactivity causes the Home Sharing to stop working. restarting iTunes is the only way to get it working again. There's nothing wrong with your antivirus or firewall. Did you have Home Sharing setup a while back and everything worked fine? I think an iTunes update coused this.
I only got my problem when I updated the apple TV software to 5.0 - so if you are on 4.0 do not updgrade..
Called Apple and they have advised me to try and change my router settings or take to a resller for them to test.
Been fine for months but since the last update each time I go to computers it can't connect to iTunes.
Rebooting iTunes each time fixes the problem.
Not good.
BKingdom, maybe you have a different problem but my iPad and my iPhone will not connect to the Home Share so that pretty much rules out it being only an AppleTV problem. I need to restart iTunes and then they all connect fine.
Pagemakers2, that is a good point. My Home Share actually shows in AppleTV but when trying to connect it fails. The previews of music or movies do not show at the top of the page either. restart iTunes and it starts workign again.
I upgrated by router to 802.11n (Airport Extreme) and that solved all my home sharing issues.
Is this issue happening to users with more than 1 ATV on their systems or to anybody with ATV?
I have only one ATV and it happens to me. I thought I'd fixed it by connecting the ATV to the router via ethernet, but it's all gone to **** in recent times. My iPhone and iPad also often fail to connect through the remote app. The only cure I've found it to disconnect my computer from the wireless network and then reconnect it.
With the iContraptions, a restart is often required.
I know little about these things, but surely it's an issue with home sharing?
I have three ATV 3's and they all exhibit the same behavior.
I haven't posted on here in a while. It has been about 3 months since I found my fix and I reported here. I dropped my iTunes down to version 10.4.1 back in December and my Home Sharing has worked flawlessly since. During this time, I have only had to restart iTunes two different times.
It does stink a little because I have to keep a second library updated on a second PC with the most current version of iTunes in order for everything to work with iOS 5, but the Windows 7 PC that I am using for Home Sharing runs the 10.4.1 version of iTunes.
I have contacted Apple about this, but it hasn't gone anywhere. There is some flaw somewhere in the iTunes / Home Sharing software that STILL isn't fixed. I don't remember where I found the older version of iTunes but I just searched the web for it. Worth a shot for some of you guys...
Why are there so many of "I too have the same problem" posts? As far as I am concerned, these problems have been solved. You just have to be willing to go outside your comfort zone of performing changes to your router and it solved. I made these necessary changes about a month ago and it has been working without a problem since, wifi or ethernet connection.
spma3, you might have solved your problem with router changes but there seems to be several slightly different problems on this thread. I'm 100% sure my problem and all others that "need to restart iTunes" are having is not router related. I have a combination of devices wired and wireless and about 2 weeks ago this problem magically appeared. I think it was an iTunes update like Dusters711 says. I'm going to try and downgrade my iTunes and report back.
@frobo, please let me know what happens after you downgrade. If this works for you then I will do it as well. I will just have to do like Dusters said and keep a separate library with the latest version for iOS 5 purposes.
@spma3, I have tried going in to my router settings and making suggested changes to no avail. This is specific to iTunes and it's relationship with home sharing.
