Sad Story -- Happy Ending!
Started yesterday at 6:30A (alllowing extra time for the update). Using a win7 (64bit), iTunes 10.2.1.1, an iPone 3GS, and USB connection.
After 3hours (went out and did moe errands) the phone was hung. can;t exit iYunes so unplugged the USB cable. Did a warm boot on the iPhone and reconnected. Mesage form itunes that the phone was in recover mode and I needed to restore. tried but it hung again -- nothing adfter an hour. Called AT&T for helkp (where I bought the phone) and a very nice person told me this was an iYunes issue and she would transfer me to Apple Customer Support. The Apple person was very direct but told me it was an Anti-virus/firewall issue and I may nned to de-install those (Norton 360) before proceeding. He said I couldn't get anymore of his help uless I wanted to pay $29 troubleshooting fee. Well, I deicede to disable 360 and try again. Long story short, I ended up at the Apple stire and they did the update on both my iPhone and iPad. Lost eveything but contacts during the process but had backed up prior to starting everything. So, 7.5 hours without my phone and a wasted day. BUT I'm back up and ok today.

Itunes kept saying Phone is not recognized while in recovery mode. I turned off my McAfee completely, modified hosts file (removed all entries), still same issue. Then i chanced on an idea that the cable is bad. Grabbed a new cable and whoa-la. The phone is being recognized now. The cable itself is from circa 2004, so there must be some kind of changes in cabling since then that prevented it to work with latest iOS/itunes upgrade. I could have sworn I've used that cable in the past for updates, syncs, charging.

For what it's worth, maybe this is helpful.

Bargh! Same thing just happened to me 'error 1013' and my iphone had to be restored, except it wouldn't let me restore the phone without the software update...I was in a catch 22! I went in circles for a while and was just about to give a phone call to Apple when it started restoring (after try number 4 or 5 and a few long minutes of panic)—and for some reason the restore decided to work? It's in the middle now so here's to hoping I don't end up with a brick.

let's hope Apple gets this fixed

i turned off all anti viruses and firewalls, backed up all my info and synced new stuff and the update still wouldn't work. It is my first time doing an update and I am not sure what I'm doing wrong and from the looks of it other people aren't able to update it as well. It keeps saying my connection time has timed out. I have no idea what to do and I've tried a dozen of times.
