iOS 4.3 Locked my factory unlocked iPhone 4!!

A warning out there to owners of factory unlocked iPhone 4's!! After updating to iOS 4.3 this morning, I proceeded to purchase a SIM card from another carrier and after inserting it into the phone, it was NOT recognized!! I have used SIM cards from the new carrier in the past and it seems like my handset is now locked!!

Be cautious!! If you plan on keeping your phone unlocked I would avoid installing the iOS 4.3 update until they fix this!!

iPhone 4,MBP 15", Mac OS X (10.6.6)

thank u, Dave, Brendan, Jaycop and Deggie

I have one more question, I did my official carrier unlock 4-5 months ago and I wanted to know that if anyone upgrades the OS, will iTunes look into servers to check if the phone is still unlocked, I mean will the carrier constantly update the status of unlock of a particular iPhone on the apple servers?

Or is it that it is just a one time confirmation of the unlock status...

I am skeptic because Brendan said that iTunes again displays the message congrats ur phone has been unlocked..

Sorry if I confused you, it only does that when I do a total restore back to factory settings (wiping the phone) which I have a few times. It doesn't do it when you just sync to backup or download an OS update.

I will probably do it again before I download iOS5 to give it a clean install. It is not neccessary but it is the way I do it with the major updates. Others don't agree with me by the way! 😝

Yes, that is the problem, you did not even purchase yours from an authorized Apple provider, it was purely gray market. What is wrong with gray market purchases? Don't have the time or space to go into it.

Why lock it? Because many iPhones are sold at a subsidized price and the cell provider needs to recoup the money from their subsidy. They are not a charity.

Apple is losing money? The are sitting on $75 billion USD in cash. They can barely build enough iPhones to keep up with demand. And they lose nothing in "clearing this mess" up because they aren't going to spend a dime helping you with your gray market unofficially locked iPhone.

Assuming your iPhone is actually from Sweden (no guarantee of that) you would have to contact 3 to see what the official unlock process is. If your iPhone is not from them then there is no way for you to officially unlock it. Next time buy one from an authorized dealer who clearly sells an unlocked phone.

I mean this is so strange,
So you mean buying an Iphone from one of the biggest legit online hardware selling point is not approved by Apple?

and of course they are not jailbroken, they are new in a packaged just like the rest of the phones.

Why is apple blocking every attempt to just syncronize your information and lock it to a sim card only.
That should be the main issues, I don't see any + on that except for fanatic control? and headache...

What "online hardware selling point" are you referring to? From what I can tell (not reading Swedish I can't be certain) the only authorized places to purchase an iPhone in Sweden are the carriers and the online Apple Store.

http://www.apple.com/se/iphone/buy/

and the carriers all sell iPhones that are locked to the respective carrier and only 3 offers unlocking services.

of course they are not jailbroken, they are new in a packaged just like the rest of the phones.

If the iPhone was not purchased from the Swedish online Apple Store, then either it almost certainly was jailbroken and repackaged, or the iPhone came from some other country, or both. From the symptoms, it was probably jailbroken.

Apple is "blocking" nothing on their own. If they were, they wouldn't be selling unlocked iPhones. Locking to carriers is demanded by the carriers who often subsidize the cost of the iPhone and understandably want to hold people to their contracts long enough for the carrier to recoup the money they've in essence loaned you.

You do realise that Apple do not actually have a telephone carrier network, they just make computers and handsets. Any further info after that is based on how your carrier sells the phone. Apple will lock it if the carrier asks but why would Apple care one way or the other, it is already paid for (in this case subsidised by the carrier which is why they want it locked).

A lot of gripes going in the wrong direction here.

Jun 9, 2011 3:14 PM in response to varjak paw

haha your joking right? selling hardware?

So let me see, by using your logic if I buy a PC with Intel it is totally ok that it should only work if Intel wants it to work?

This is a joke right? how do you justify that APPLE not the carrier locks the phone?
I mean its not the Carrier you contact to have it liberated as probided in Brazil.
its Apple !

And btw it is NOT jailbraked.. It worked perfectly in SWEDEN not outside SWEDEN. it was carrier unlocked.

So is it just me that thinks this locking is just really strange?
wow i though a lot of people that it was very fishy... but then again.. I could be wrong.

Jun 9, 2011 6:31 PM in response to jaycop

No, the carrier sets the locking provisions on cell phones. You cannot compare an Intel PC with a smartphone, you are not required on the PC to have a contract with anyone for data and voice services.

How do you know it was carrier unlocked? The only iPhones sold unlocked in Sweden are at Apple Stores and you admitted you didn't buy yours there. The only provider in Sweden that offers an official unlock is 3 and you didn't buy it from them. So what to you base your carrier unlock on?

If it was officially unlocked it would be working now.

Jun 10, 2011 11:06 AM in response to deggie

deggie! I am really not trying to be rude or anything.

But do you really mean no one is allowed to sell iphones except for Apple store or 3 that is unlocked?

you have now mentioned it in 4 of your latest posts..

One of the biggest supplieres.

and if you look it SPECIFILY SAYS: UNLOCKED FOR ANY CARRIER... (Ej operatörslåst )

there is more then 10 other stores in Sweden that sells Iphones , unlocked also.
My frustration because you always try to come back an issue that has no relevance..

I am trying to explain to you I used my Iphone with 2 different carriers in Sweden without any problem.
and it was not jailbraked. It worked perfectly... BUT when i moved to Brazil and put my Brazilian sim into it... .. it blocked me for some reason it locks itself to the Carrier and only Sweden...

So WHY do they do this?
There is no absolute gain in doing this... can we agree on that?

Jun 10, 2011 11:18 AM in response to jaycop

No, we can't agree on anything.

According to the documents on the Apple.com site the ONLY place in Sweden that you can buy an officially unlocked iPhone in Sweden is from an APPLE STORE. If you buy an iPhone from one of the cell operators in Sweden it is locked to that operator. The only operator in Sweden that will unlock it for you, once you meet their terms, is 3.

This are the only authorized sites.

Now any other store that wants to can buy iPhones on the gray market and sell them. Some of them may be from stores in Singapore, Italy, or an Apple Store in Canada, or maybe even Sweden and they could actually be authentically unlocked. But then again they may be purchased from other sources (much more likely) and they may have been unlocked through non-official means.

The ones that are officially unlocked (and you can call AppleCare and give them your serial number and find out if you want) when they are upgraded will still work with any carrier. No problem.

The ones that are unofficially unlocked when upgraded will relock to whatever carrier they were originally locked to. You will then get a message that the SIM you are using will not work with your iPhone. I believe that is the message you are getting so logic would suggest you have an unofficially unlocked iPhone. Since the place you purchased yours is not authorized in Sweden to sell officially unlocked iPhones there is no way of telling for sure.

So call AppleCare, give them your serial number and see what carrier your iPhone is locked to. If they say it is a truly officially unlocked iPhone you can go through steps with them to resolve your problem. If they say it is locked to AT&T they don't unlock iPhones so you will have to resort to unofficial means. If they say it is locked to anyone else you will need to contact that carrier.

Hello , sorry to tell but my brother bought a factory unlocked IP4 last december at Eaton center Canada, tooks it to Argentina latin america and it worked like a charm till now that he updated to io 4.3!

Itunes gaves an error "SIM card doesnt seems to be valid" and the phone was not longer activated and stays in the itunes plug screen!

I spoke with a senior apple adviser at Eaton center apple support that keeps saying the serial number associated with that phone is registered as unlocked in their systems and certainly should work with any sim! But saddly its not!

They also suggested that the local carrier may be causing the problem but those doesnt seems to help solve the problem!

We also tried restoring to factory settings, different sim cards but nothing works! The phone is not working at all till march!

Any comment 'd be of great help!

Shall we assume that the phone is indeed relocked after io's update? Any solution?

Thanks for your time and help!
