Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.
Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.
Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.
I had to go to the city today, so I stopped by the "Apple" store. I had two Genius's come up to me. I asked if they have had many returns because of the light leakage. The girl looked me in the eye and said "Never heard of that", the guy behind her had a strange smirk on is face.
I can MAYBE believe they haven't taken any back since they don't have any to give, but to not have heard of it? Genius? Really? I think either they just don't know how to address it, or Apple has told them to keep their mouths shut for now.
I would have come away feeling MUCH better if they just said they have heard of it, but no one has been in their store with the problem.
The story is everywhere.
What really made me mad was they had about 10 of them on display, and not one smart cover to try, only new ones in the box. That was my main reason to stop in, so I could try one.
They know but its the typical Apple response to not acknowledge a problem is LARGE...
As for the smart covers, I will tell you I have a black leather one...real cool, now just need to get the back cover protected with Zagg..
As for having them on display, Id imagine they dont have them on display because they would almost assuredly walk out the door if they were displayed...they just attach with magnets so it would be very easy to just steal them...IMO...
Same issue here. No light leakage on my iPad 1, leakage @ bottom right of my iPad 2 (32 GB Verizon). Will wait a week or two to see if the situation improves. If no improvement, I plan to ask for a replacement. Hopefully, Apple will have corrected the flaw in their manufacturing process/quality control by then.
My buddy at our office got his yesterday. We just checked and sure enough he has some pretty significant light leakage ( a little bit on every side basically...)
Pretty disheartening as it seems like this is a huge % of devices. Mine arrives tomorrow and I am quite sure it will have this 'defect'.
Returned my first ipad 2 because of a pixel anomaly, horrible white balance and minor light bleeding. The replacement did not even get turned on because it had a white dust particle under the screen. The second replacement had better white balance, no pixel anomalies, but really bad light bleeding. Going to return this one tomorrow and try a fourth. If the next one isn't any better I will ask for my money back and wait until the end of April to buy again.
I don't want to be callous but I don't believe you when you say you have one that doesn't have light leak. I've searched the entire internet and can not find one person who does not have this problem. You're right though -- it's no basis to conclude they're all affected -- with that being said -- I Would like to see proof.
Please take your ipad 2 that you say has no light leaking into a closet, turn the brightness on 100%, and open safari and go to blackle.com -- take a picture of it.
Got my exchange Black 32GB WiFi yesterday, and it still has some light bleeding. Only noticeable at the highest brightness in the darkest room, unlike my first which was apparent at any brightness. Think I'm going to hold on to this one until Apple acknowledges this issue and fixes it.

No thanks. That's not anywhere near normal usage. At least for me.
My display is gorgeous, I don't have any problems, I love my iPad 2.
And speaking for myself, I wouldn't worry about any problem that could not be perceived except under those conditions.
I originally bought a 64gb Black model and returned for 2 more models that really bad light bleeding. This morning I went in and replaced my third iPad and they had no more 64gb Black Wifi models. I told the staff that I didn't care about white or black at this point and I just wanted one with a good screen. They gave me a 64gb White Wifi model and this one is by far the bast one so far. It does have the light bleed, but it is in no way as extreme as the other models. No tech product is perfect, but it does come down to what you will you be happy with and so far I am very happy with this iPad. To those looking for the perfect iPad, I don't believe they exist right now, but there are iPads out there that are very good with only minor light bleed.
That's pretty genius of you to say " I wouldn't worry about any problem that could not be perceived except under those conditions." Really?
You don't have to turn it to 100% in a dark room to see the problem. If you're at any brightness, over let's say 20%, in a dark room, you'll see it. Those conditions are pretty typical and if you can't "perceive" that either, then you can keep loving your defective ipad that you paid 500+ for.
If you're looking for a car, give me a call. I'll sell you something great.

I simply offered my own first hand experience:
I don't have the light leak problems.
My iPad is not defective.
Humph. Okay so at a very high brightness in a dark room, you MAY have some bleeding then Elizabeth? I am not asking for any reason other than actually finding out if there are iPad 2s out there with literally no light bleeding.
That's all I am trying to figure out here and was the purpose of my other thread "anyone without any light bleeding"
