Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Listen, I'm not trying to be a jerk... right now. If you took a dark room pic to show us, you'd really be helping us out. As far as everyone on this discussion is concerned, a leak free ipad 2 doesn't exist. If they do, you'd kinda be giving alot of people hope. Especially those who've returned their ipads multiple times and gotten the same problem.

So, take backsies. and please post photo. thanks.

My iPad's great. I'm not going to lock myself in a closet, turn up the screen to 100%, navigate to a web site and take a photo to satisfy anybody. You'll just have to take my word for it.

And try to keep in mine that most of the people posting on a technical help board have problems so it's easy to get a skewed view of any situation from that small, and focused sample size. There is no need for me to comment further on this issue, so I am now exiting this thread.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I went to my local apple store, who hadn't even heard of the issue, which surprised me, they said I was the first customer to report any issue with the iPad 2, which I found hard to believe, but anyways, they swapped my unit out with a new one, unfortunately, the new one is much, much worse.

User uploaded file

Whereas, my first unit only had 2 issues. I honestly would recommend holding off for a month or two to replace your iPad 2, stock is very limited right now. And, I honestly feel like a lot of them will have this issue.

So in other words, you're in denial :P
It doesn't even have to be inside a closet -- just take a pic of it at night time with a movie on the screen (that should be normal usage, right? Watching a 16:9 AR movie at night? Or is that not "normal" either? I guess I'm not normal!)...but you won't. Normal usage is whatever the end user deems appropriate -- there's no such thing as "normal" usage -- if I buy a product I'm going to use it any way I want to, and I don't expect to see yellow blobs on the screen while I'm using it. But whatever, we know you won't take a pic -- it's fine if you don't care about the issue, but saying your unit doesn't have that problem is false until proven otherwise.

But what about the point I made that the iPad 1 and other tablets (xoom, galaxy tab) do not have this problem? You won't even take that as a valid point? Although to be fair -- I have read quite a few posts about iPad 1 users having this problem -- but in all cases it seems to be very low leakage -- nothing like the iPad 2 problem. My iPad 1 does not have any such issues.

BTW -- I ordered a new one online today and the ship date is 4-5 weeks. I'm hoping by that time they will have solved the manufacturing defect and I will get a good one. If it arrives and it still has the problem then I am completely giving up on iPad 2.

I took two pictures, the first one is of the iPad with full brightness and a black image in a pitch black room.

The second one, I opened the door a bit so a little light would come in. I don't notice any light leakage except for maybe a teensy tiny bit in the bottom of the pic. It's so little that it doesn't bother me. Before I bought my iPad, I was reading this thread and it was eating away at my sanity (like one user said lol), but I was happy to find that I didn't have this problem like the other members on this thread. I bought my iPad 2 white 16gb wifi from Walmart site to store on march 11 and got it 5 days later.

For the people who are saying that EVERYONE has this issue, I disagree. Probably a vast majority of the people have it, but not everyone. The People who do have the issue are the ones that are going to come online and post about so it make it look like everyone has the issue. The people who don't have it either aren't aware of it or didn't notice it and aren't going to be coming online to post about it.

For those who do have the issue, apple should release an official statement or something and fix there manufacturing process. But it doesn't look like a manufacturing defect. Maybe only iPads produced in some of apples factories have this issue and not all?

Good luck for those of you with the problem, I however love my iPad 2 !

I would like to personally thank you for taking those pics -- it helps us ALL when people like you contribute to the community (unlike some members who simply wish you to take their word for it -- ha!). Much appreciated! The reason being is that yours is the best I have seen yet from online pics. There is bleeding in the bottom right but it's very, VERY small. I would say that the one you purchased is acceptable. I wish I could get one like that. My ship date still says 4-5 weeks, but I will definitely update with a new post when I get it.

EDIT: Upon closer look at the pic I can see it along the entire left hand side in little patches.

Your attitude to and about Elizabeth is pretty close to bullying - she's helping out other people and contributing to the debate just like everyone else here. She's not required to go hide in closets just to please people, there's no reason for people to pretend they don't have an item with a product they've paid for, just take her word for it.

Uhm...ok...IMHO she's not helping anyone, she's just being a fangirl and telling me how I'm not normal if I use my ipad in dimly lit room and watch movies with the brightness on 100%.

That's real helpful, I gotta tell ya.

Also, how is claiming that you have a good iPad 2 and not proving it helping anyone? If anything that's just dangling this huge piece of hope in front of us and then toying with our minds...gotta be a pretty messed up person to do that -- just saying -- but I mean there are numerous requests for this on other forums as well (a picture of an iPad 2 that does not have this problem so we can all make comparisons).

If we were to see that there was an iPad 2 out there that doesn't have a problem with the screen it could give us hope -- and we could compare ours to the picture and see just how bad of a degree the problem is on our units -- that's also a good thing to have if you're going to the genius bar and want to get a swap. You can say here's what one that doesn't have the problem looks like, and here's what mine looks like. _*So yeah, I don't see anyone being helped at all by her comments.*_

Shehrammajid on the other hand -- his is the best I've seen so far, and his post was *extremely helpful*. There are slight patches on the bottom and moreso in the bottom right, but I would have to say that seeing this pic gives me (and maybe other people) hope, and it definitely gives us something to compare to -- and look --- this is his first post on the forum. He signed up just to show us! Totally amazing and helpful person -- the complete opposite of Elizabeth (lol).

Anyways -- my ship date for my online order is April 22nd (LOL).
I would have to think that all these delays and such are due to them fixing the manufacturing defect. I mean what else could it be? There were not any stock problems with iPad 1 or even iPhone 4 (unless you count the white iPhone 4 which still hasn't made an appearance!).

Mar 19, 2011 7:02 AM in response to Merged Content 1

Because this is an Apple product 🙂
Apple never does anything wrong -- Remember antennagate? Jobs said he was holding the phone the wrong way (LOL) -- just like if I want to watch a movie on an ipad 2 in a dimly lit room with the brightness on 100% -- Elizabeth claims I'm "using it the wrong way" and that's not "normal usage" -- it's all nonsense, propagated by fanboys \ fangirls who are in some sort of cult that worship Apple and everything they do \ make \ say. A lot of people are in denial about this -- especially because the iPad 2 stock was so limited. Like I said -- I would ask people to check for the screen problem and they'd be like "wow that picture of yours *****, but MINE doesn't look ANYTHING like that -- I LOVE my iPad 2" -- then I ask them to turn the brightness up and load up a movie and watch it with the lights off -- and then they say "OMG what is that stuff on the edge of the screen?" At first they are proud and in denial -- and then they realize that there IS something wrong there.

I have pretty bad light leakage on my Ipad 2, 64gb, verizon. A few really bright spots across the bottom and some really broad bright spots across the top. I noticed the real bright spot on the bottom when i first turned it on in a well lit room. It was quite pronounced during the boot time. I bought mine from apple.com since the closest apple store is 3 hours away. I filled out the apple support form and they are suppose to call me on Monday. Has anyone had to exchange an apple.com purchase? How does the process go? Do they let you keep the defective unit until the new one arrives? I don't care if it takes 6 weeks to get a new one as long as it is not defective.
FYI, I was reading an article at Ilounge.com. They had 7 ipad 2 units. 1 was perfect, no light bleed. 3 had minor light bleed with the brightness all the way up in a dark room. The other 3 had pronounced light bleed at normal brightness. Mine falls into that category. 3 out of 7 being bad isn't a good sign.

Bought on Day 1 and it was the first thing I noticed when I turned it on. So it is Day 8 and the light bleeding has not gone away. It does not affect performance, as a matter of fact, it's awesome. However, when I'm in that app that has a black border, I'm reminded that it's there. I have an appointment today with the Genius bar so we shall see. Black 64GB WiFi.

Let us know what they tell you!

I waited in line on Launch Day for a 64 GB Black iPad 2. When I brought it home, I immediately saw the light emitted from all corners, thereby affecting playback in dark screen scenarios because light leaked. I brought it back to Apple Store (even though I bought it at Best Buy), and they were telling me how cool the iPad was and were trying to "help me out" by assessing the situation despite not having bought it from them. Well, they took it to a back room, and claimed "it was within spec," which was absolute BS because it's blatantly everywhere. They offered to give me a new one (again, stipulating that I was being given the courtesy of a new one even though I didn't buy it from Apple). They brought a brand new iPad 2, and the service rep and I opened the box to check it out. It suffered from the bleeding issue significantly more than the way mine did. So, I kept mine. He eventually said, "Come back in a month and we'll give you a new one," - suggesting that he knew there was a major issue with these units.

Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
