Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Well...I'm back from the Genius Bar with my brand new iPad 2! Let me say I'm very impressed at how easy it was to get things resolved. I made my appointment and after waiting no more than 5 minutes, one of the Geniuses came up to me, asked about my problem, and said "Yep, you've got pretty significant bleeding." After a few diagnostic checks, he said that they have units available only for replacement of defective units, checked his computer and went in the back to get one for me. Let me say the new one is a tremendous improvement over what I had. With a trained eye, I can see a very minor bleed spot...not nearly enough for me to feel like it needs to be replaced. I originally bought my iPad 2 at Best Buy and had no problems swapping it at Apple. I'm VERY satisfied. I left with the impression that possibly one manufacturing line appears to have had "some" problems. I think everyone on this forum knows that though.

For anyone that is having a problem, make an appointment with a Genius Bar and take it back to them. It was a very pleasant experience and very satisfying.

I got 2 units on launch day, both have leaks, one not really bad but enough to not be ok for the $850 spent. The other looks like the photo in this thread. My iPad 1 had the most brilliant perfect screen.....and the person who bought it from me is probably loving it! When I set up my ip2, I did so side by side with my ip1. I was sooo disappointed in the screen differences!!! Ip1 was brilliant bright, no bleeds. Amazing to play with. Ip2 looked gray/yellow next to it....zero brilliance User uploaded file Just cheap nasty horrible display. I bought them at the same time, same place. Very similar s/n's.
These are going back! But I will wait until this problem is addressed properly by Apple, or just return them for cash back until new batches are not flawed.
Battery *****, too! But that's a whole different topic.
I'm really bummed. My first AND LAST line waiting event.

Guys..I and many of my friend that bought one all have the same problem. I also have a dead pixel. This is definitely unacceptable on Apple's part. Trying to increase the manufacturing output at foxconn to meet demand but sacrificing quality User uploaded file I was at the apple store genius bar today and they acknowledged that this issue exists. I asked for a refund and clearly they were trying to make me exchange one from their secret stash like if they were doing me a favor. They also said they can't guarantee that if I exchange for a new unit that it would not have the issue. I insisted on for a refund but they wanted me to get a store credit. After an hour wait, they agreed to call AppleCare to file a case bc for whatever reason, genius bar could not open a case for refund. They also told me that you cannot get a refund at apple store if you bought at apple.com. Go figure!

Fedex is picking up my iPad back on Monday. Not worth buying when they are all defective. Apple, I hope you added another station at the foxconn production line to screen the bad ones out. My friend just exchanged one tonight from your store secret stash and it is WORSE!

yeah pretty lame huh?

Did they just give you a brand new retail one? They did for me... she literally just opened one of their new ones that they keep aside for these sorts of issues.

Screen bleed still blows. I really hope apple says something Monday. I am planning on trying a 3rd on Monday...if it still has the issue (i'll ask them to check it in the store) then I plan on returning for a full refund. I'd rather not keep my iPad 2, then replace it with a refurbished product later. No thanks.

can u just return the second one...and wait until they actually fix the problem....u dont need to have the ipad now...i mean if it were a cheap product maybe..but ipad is expensive and just keep it because its better than not having it, its giving apple what they want..profit..without actually dealing with the problem

An update for you all: http://www.cultofmac.com/if-your-ipad-2-has-display-problems-do-not-return-it-he res-why/87197
Not too much new information but it's good to see that more and more blog sites are giving this issue publicity. Apple needs to publicly own up to this -- in order to get them to do that we need to make people aware of this problem. Something of note:

+*"I’ve been told — off the record — that the iPad 2 display manufacturing problems have been identified and at some point Apple will be shipping product with no defects. When that will be though, is anyone’s guess. Apple’s PR department hasn’t responded to a second request for comment."*+

I would also speculate that this is the reason why my online order for a new one (I made on March 18th) isn't scheduled to ship until April 22nd. I think it plain ***** that Apple is doing this all in the dark and not telling us what went wrong and when we can expect decent quality devices -- but oh well...Maybe if we make the issue even more public they will HAVE to do something? I say each and every one of us who is po'ed at having bad devices tells all of our friends and posts on forums our experiences -- also call apple tech support and be nice but promptly explain why you think this situation is unacceptable.

Apple will probably never make this public. Why? Because for some it is NOT an issue, they will never see it, but if Apple makes a public announcement that there is a defect, everyone will walk into a dark room, crank the brightness up, and see the issue and return it.

I really don't care if they go public, I just want it fixed before mine ships 🙂

Still really enjoying my iPad 1 until...

Apple store swapped mine with a new one already and it's still has the same issue. When I called Apple I talked with a supervisor or something he tried to bull sh I t with me that it's very normal for iPad 2 to have this problem it's just its nature, so I told him that my Ipad 1 LCD's doesn't has this issue at all. he said that iPad 2 has a different design that iPad 1 which make iPad 2 thinner so this is what to expect. so I told him that (which is the truth) I bought 2 iPad 2 on launch date one for myself and one for my friend, but my friend's iPad 2 doesn't has this problem at all, so he made appointment for me with Apple store in The Grove, Los Angeles and my genius guy tried to bull h I t too that it's normal because all the iPad 2 in his store has the same backlight bleeding too! so do all of his friends and his manager's iPad 2, but he said that he will order a new one for me anyway but it's most likely that it'll still has the same problem. I'm so mad!

Szech -

Looks like a marked improvement over the first one although there still appears to be some in the lower right corner...although that much I could certainly live with...

Im waiting for Apple to contact me when a replacement will be available...perhaps they havent yet as they are on their way from Foxconn after fixing whatever the production issue was that caused this defect...

Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
