Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.
Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.
Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.
It's post like these that make you wonder *** is wrong with Apple these days. I mean they didn't always used to be this way...It seems they don't care either, because every major tech news site that has contacted Apple for a response about this has received no answer (except for cultofmac's off the record response that basically says we know about it and we'll fix it sometime rofl)...
That's an unacceptable answer. I went to my Apple Store and they exchanged it in a minute after telling them the problem and them running a diagnostic test. I'd talk to the supervisor or someone with more knowledge because everyone on here will tell you it really doesn't change at all.
BTW I Just called every best buy, walmart, and target in the area. None of them have ANY stock, and were only supplied with stock on launch day (March 11th, 2 weeks ago). They did confirm they had stock only for exchanges (Just best buy -- walmart and target dont even have that!!). The Apple store says "we receive stock every day" but said they were sold out (an hour after the store opens theyre sold out? how much stock are they receiving per day? 10 units?) -- told me to call them at 9 AM tomorrow because they "might" get another shipment today and it will be on sale at 9 AM tomorrow....*I would have to say this is the worst and most botched product launch in apple company history.*
This is worse than Antennagate, worse than the iMac's display problems, worse than any other apple product flaw. A case \ bumper will not fix this issue or magically give stock to stores that have floor models and nothing else to sell btw, what's the point of having a floor model if you don't have the actual item for sale? That's the most ******** thing I've ever heard of -- hey check this out -- it's in our store and you can play with it, but you can't buy it -- only Apple could sink this low.
I brought my iPad 2 to a Genius Bar appointment yesterday and mentioned the light leakage problem I had noticed. The tech said, "I'll take it in back and check it, and if it looks worse than my screen, I'll get you a new one." I appreciated that he acknowledged the issue and took it in back without a problem. After five minutes, we joked that he was probably trying to post it on eBay, when he returned with a new iPad 2 box. The replacement was not perfect in terms of light leakage (I'm not convinced that any screen is perfect), but it was much better, and definitely acceptable to me.
I'd say don't be discouraged if the genius you get says no. You can always schedule an appointment with another genius. Worst case, if they’re adamant about not exchanging it, ask whether they have any new ipads in stock--you can say that if they won't swap it out, you'd like to return it and get your money back, and then buy a new one. Usually, they'll realize they're being unreasonable and swap it out at that point.
kenthabattousai, this is not acceptable behavior from an Apple employee. you need to go back to your Apple store, demand to speak to the manager, and raise some ****.
You should not be convinced that you are lucky to have a defective product. If an Apple employee told me this, I would have made a huge scene.
Same Herr in Germany. I waited 7 hours in front of an apple store just to get one that has issues. But I think it's also a good thing. I will use this one for a few weeks till there are new ones in stock an then swap it.
Well these few posts confirm it -- the screen defect was NOT fixed in time for the international launch -- I feel sorry for all you guys who spent hours wasting your time in huge lines. That really ******* *****. Apple execs: you should be ******* ashamed of yourselves right now. This is 100% unacceptable. *They knew about it too, they ******* knew about it
And they still shipped the defected units to retail stores for the international launch..WOW*
Don't go there. There are many of us that got good ones and don't post because they are happy. I checked mine very very carefully for light leaks and mine is just fine. One small spot could be found if you blasted it on high backlight and put up a black screen. Now I can't find it at all.
Don't get stressed. Lots of people are very happy with their ipad. If you do have a big problem, take it to Apple and they will take care of it or give you a work order number to replace it when the new ones arrive.
UnAcceptable! Call Apple Direct let them know The Store Location & The Employees Name you talked to! They will call that store and straighten the situation out! You should not have to wait another 2 weeks. Nor have a poor excuse stop you from getting an exchange. It is NOT the Glue not dried! It is the opposite! the Glue did not dry evenly so now there is light leakage 7 pressure points on some units. Once you call Apple Directly you will not have any more problems! They will make it right! They are Superb in Warranties and Customer Relations! the Apple Employee you talked to is NOT correct. And Apple will correct that!
I bought my IPad on Friday. It was the UK launch, I was in London. I arrived relatively late compared with some other people in the cue, I got there are 11:00 am and got my iPad at 1740. After seeing reports of backlight bleeding in the US iPads I did the usual test of playing a film in the dark. To my disappointment my iPad had backlight bleeding. I have had mine replaced. However this also has backlight bleeding.
The gentleman who served me said that I should wait 5 days and if the problem hadn't resolved itself I should come back and get a refund, which I intend to and just buy my iPad at a later date.
Just returned from the Genius Bar at Bridgeport Village in Tigard, OR USA. This was my second visit for light leakage and I'm on my second unit.
The Apple employees were great and acknowledge the issue and said they have sent back all their replacement units at the request of Apple Corp. and ordered me a new unit from a production run without the issue. It may take 3-4 weeks, but I'm ok with it if I get a unit without the issue. They also said all their demo units had the issue at different levels.
I feel a little better that Apple understands the issue and is working to resolve it. I guess there may be hope for a resolution sometime soon.
