Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

I have used my unit for a full day and a half now and the light leakage seems to be dissipating quite a bit. I now how to crank the brightness all the way up to MAX settings to really see anything. I have been rubbing my thumb along the bezel to see if the screen simply needs time to settle.

I am willing to bet that this is the case in most scenarios. Hence when you go get a replacement those units have had some more time to settle on there own after shipping from China/Foxconn. I don't know if I am right or wrong but I would say give your until a few days before jumping up and getting a replacement.

I am seriously thinking of canceling my online order now, and hanging on to my iPad 1 until they sort this issue out. The nearest Apple store to me is 1.5 hours away, and it would be a real pain to go through what some of you are experiencing.

My order is over a month away, so I may wait a few days before canceling, but I am reading this light bleed, and lesser quality screen is widespread.

I wouldn't say the screen is lower quality. Everyone needs to realize that Apple has utilized a different method for attaching the screen to the unit this time. With the iPad 1 they used clips to hold the screen in place. This time around they used a bonding agent to adhere the screen to the unit, which may explain the light leakage in the first few days since these things are shipping SO fast out of China the bonding agent may not have full time to dry.

As I have mentioned in my posts the light leakage seems to be a lot less now and it has only been a day and a half since I got the unit. I wouldn't worry about the ones shipping in a month. Apple is certainly aware of this issue by now and is working to correct the problem. Just a theory but that might be why they increased the shipping time from 2-3 weeks to 3-4 weeks...gives the bonding agents time to dry and fully adhere.

My white 64gb wifi pad looks the same as brzilian's picture in a previous post

Went back to the apple store today and they said they are aware on the issue. They looked at mine and said that it's the same problem as they had with their iPhone 4 with the yellowish light leakage. They said it should disappear after a week. It's caused by the glue they used and it is still curing. So I wil give them a wek and see. I also contacted apples main tech support and have a record of my problem. Apple has a 14 day return policy so yes I can give them a week. I personally think it will but will wait and see.

I bought mine (white) on Friday after waiting all day. The bleeding was really noticeable. It would worsen when touched. Took it back Saturday. To my surprise I was thrilled that Apple had a replacemen after selling out on Friday. I checked it out in the store, but it seemed ok in the fluorescent light.. I figured it was a fluke. After setting the new unit up at home I noticed the leaking on the new one again with video and applications with dark backgrounds.

Dissapointing Indeed. iPad 1 was flawless, so who would have thought that the iPad 2 would have issues?
Hopefully Apple will make it right.

Anyone know how long refund/replace policy is for? My Android fan colleagues will never let me live this one down.

After dealing with this issue when the iPad 1 came out, I will probably just keep the yellow light leaking iPad 2. Exchanging a device is like gambling in a casino because based on my experiences from last year, most iPads have this issue. Why not just return the device you say? Well, I love Apple products and I really like iPads; therefore, I will let Apple take advantage of me this time.

I don't think it's light bleed as you can't see the light from the back of the unit. The effect is more similar to placing your finger on your flat screen tv or monitor.

Considering these units were bonded with glue, I'm assuming these light blotches are from the bonding of the glue adding pressure at these points(similar to finger pressure on a screen) thus creating the light/yellow blotches you see.

It does make sense that pressure is created from the glue drying/bonding process in where the glue shrinks or tightens adding uneven pressure on the screen which is reflected on the corners and sides of the units.

Personally they should have stuck with the clips and used a gasket for a seal as the glue idea was bad thinking on there part and a 5th grader can tell you that. As long as they continue to use the same method, it won't be fixed. They have to do a recall or stick it too us again like the iPhone 4.

I just got back from the Apple store and I am livid. When I told the so called "Apple Genius" lady about the abnormal backlight bleeding that I was experiencing on my iPad she told me, and I quote, "Backlight bleeding is a feature of the iPad," and she refused to replace my device. I sincerely hope that this issue fixes itself over time or Apple develops a solution for the backlight bleeding.

I would have spoken to someone else, or demanded a refund.

I had the same problem.Took it back.Got back home checked it and had the same exact problem but worse. My speakers are jarring too.Spent almost $1000 on this innovation. Was an apple fan but now i am getting the feeling that apple is all about money and quality has become secondary. Will try taking back again and replacing. If it does that again i think apple has to answer for the people who waited in lines for hours to get thier product.I am mad.
