iPad 2 HDMI A/V adapter doesn't work on my tv

Just one ... The advent of mirroring didn't, doesn't, change how videos played before. Apps which have video out enabled still work the same way, and the presence of video out trumps 'normal' mirroring.

My iPad 2 also doesn't work with the hdmi out. All I get is the sound stops on my ipad2. The video continues on the iPad but nothing is mirrored. No Audio or Video on my TV. Pretty lame if you ask me. It cant be the hdmi cable because it's the same cable I use for my other devices that work great.

Also, I tested the iPad to VGA adapter on this iPad 2. I bought the adapter brand new today from the apple store along with that hdmi A/V adapter. Guess what? That doesn't work either! What gives? Any solutions?

I've been monitoring this issue over the past day since I've experienced this exact same issue. I found a solution myself, but it might be one that you might not like (and may not work for you).

I'm assuming a lot of you had ipad 1st generation models and had them backed up to your PC or Mac. If you did, then you're in the same boat as me. I should have known better, but I did a restore to my iPad 2 from my iPad 1 since I really didn't feel like redoing all of my folders, wallpapers, settings, etc. Alas...I wound up having to wipe my iPad 2 yet again as a test just to see if the issue was spawned from incompatibilities between my old restore point and the new iPad 2 hardware.

After calling my local Apple Store without much information as well as calling Apple's Customer Service line, I was basically told to restore my iPad 2 to factory settings. I did so. Then the moment of truth...

I plugged in my generic HDMI cord into the TV and voila...worked like a charm. Now I, unfortunately, have to go back and re-sync all my apps without them being contained in all my nice little folders. Oh well, a small price to pay to get this HDMI AV adapter to work.

So...back up all your iPad apps and start factory restoring, people! If that doesn't fix your issue, you may have a defective HDMI or digital AV out adapter.

Just went to the Pasadena Apple Store this morning to return the HDMI Adapter. After trying to make it work my with my Original iPad, I decided I'm gonna just get it after my ipad 2 gets here in FOUR WEEKS (FML). Anyways, I talked to the sales guy helping me out and he said

Sales Guy - "This only works with the iPad 2"

Me - "Well, I think the Keynote said it would work with the original iPad and the description in the online store also said that it would work with the iPad."

Sales Guy - "Well, I'm going to have to call them and let them know they're wrong!"

Me thinking - wow, who's this guy think he is? hahaha

By the way, I went into the store and finally held the new ipad2 . . . it's friggin awesome . . feels a lot better in my hands than the original . . .maybe because I don't have one yet and I have the dreaded apple addiction!

Gary, yeah, it does say on their website that it's for the iPad 2 only (in fine print in light gray font on a white background!). I haven't tried this accessory with the iPhone 4 yet, so I'm curious as to how it would use this accessory (video output only?).

Honestly, I think this is an ingenious move by Apple. It forces us iPad addicts to upgrade to take advantage of another cool, yet somewhat unnecessary (depending on your needs), add-on.

As a tech lover, I gotta admit, I was geekin' out pretty hard when I was able to play Infinity Blade and Tiny Wings on my 50" plasma TV. Playing Infinity Blade on a big TV really gives you the impression that you're playing a next-gen console. It's pretty impressive!

BTW, I'm curious to know if any of you tried my suggestion with your iPad 2s. Let me know if resetting your iPad 2s to factory settings actually helped.

I tried restoring my Ipad 2 back to the factory settings. Following that I set it up as a new Ipad, did not restore from my previous backup. Unfortunately, this did not correct my HDMI video/audio problems.

I believe I am having the same (or similar) issue. I bought the HDMI connector to connect my iPad2 to my 42in plasma. When I connect it, I dont see anything on the TV. If I open a youtube or Netflix video and play it, the iPad2 says playing to the TV. I get sound out of the TV speakers, but no video out on the TV screen. (No video on the iPad2 either, just the message that it is playing video to the TV). If I switch the iPad2 to the home screen or other Apps, the iPad2 acts as if it is not plugged into the TV at all.

I know that the HDMI connector and cable are fine, because I can unplug my iPad2 and plug in my iPhone4 (with iOS 4.3), and play a YouTube video (with video and sound) on the TV.

I did not restore an iPad1 backup onto the iPad2. I have treated it as a new device, adding apps manually.

Thoughts?

I used the HDMI apapter for awhile today on my iPad 1 and it only worked on Netflix and YouTube. If you move the cable it does disconnect and you have to start over. Didn't work on Hulu or anything else except an iTunes movie I downloaded. Hope this helps, I had to connect it with out my gel case in between the cable so it was all the way in snug. Very loose though

I initially had trouble with this connection. I found that if I shut my iPad 2 down completely and restarted it while it was plugged into the adapter, it began to work. However it took several seconds before it sync up with the TV. It mirrored pretty well and we watched a 2 hour movie from the video app with no problem. I also had the iPad 2 charging during this session. I tried using the cable on a 4th generation ipod touch and it worked only with the video app but the slightest movement caused the video to drop out on the TV.

But I think the software / hardware is pretty buggy for these many people recording complaints. I hope the come up with a solution to this, as I would like to use the iPad 2 for keynotes and other presentations as well.

The ipad hdmi adapter does not establish a firm connection to the TV. It works fine if the ipad is sitting still on a table surface. The slightest motion causes a loss of signal. The wires remain connected, but the signal is unsteady. It requires turning off the ipad and restarting. I got the same results on 4 different HDMI cables and 2 ipads.

This intermittent loss of signal makes the HDMI Adapter useless for gaming and keynote talks

I have experienced similar video/audio issues with the HDMI adapter. From my previous post:

"I am having similar symptoms of a intermittent signal from my Ipad 2 using the HDMI adapter. I've tried two different adapters, two TV's and two different HDMI cables, with the same poor results. It seems the connector does not make a firm connection with the Ipad. My Ipad 2 works fine with the component video adapter."

After a Genius bar appointment the resolution was replacement of my Ipad 2. The new Ipad 2 plays videos properly with no intermittent signal problems. I can also hold and move the Ipad 2 without a loss of signal to the TV.

I'd recommend if you are having similar symptoms, have Apple replace your device.

Interesting enough, I determined that HDMI cable types made the difference for me. Not sure why, but I decided to disconnect my PS3 and use that HDMI cable (bought this one from monoprice) and the Apple HDMI adapter using my gen-1 iPad and iPhone4 works like a charm. I bought the $20 HDMI cable from the Apple store when I bought the adapter tonight and that one DOES NOT WORK A total piece of crap. I wasted 30 minutes troubleshooting a blank screen on my 50" Panny. Swapped the HDMI cable and it works...

My 2 cents:

I had the same problem as mjcanino. When the iPad2 was connected i got a black screen on the tv, but i did get sound from the tv. (Tried on two different tv's / cables). Same for the youtube video on my iPhone 4, btw.
I followed mjcanino's advise and restarted the iPad while it was connected to the tv. Guess what, after that it worked as advertised on the iPad. Everything mirrored fine + sound.

Strangely enough, when I plugged my iPhone 4 back in - thinking i would have to use the same trick, it worked straight away!
This makes be think that it's a cable issue, but I don't see how that can be.

Anyway, if you have the problem of no video signal but you do get sound, restart the iPad and see if that works.

But my tv is a 1080i not a 1080p

I tried both my iphone 4's and it's no good, it tells me that it's playing through the TV but
Dosnt show anything! My big screen LCD says no signal detected, won't play when trying to access video from iTunes on iPad or iPhones either.

I tried using legit apple av cables I brought originally for my old iPhone and they worked on both iPhones and iPad2, but only when I was running iTunes or video app! So I'm starting to think it's either the HDMI cable adaptor or a software bug with my ipad2. I will take both to apple store and try to fault find the issue, this must be fixable!

I personally don't believe it's a hardware issue with the ipad2 or else it wouldn't have played using the av cables, it could be hardware with the HDMI cable? But I'll have to see!

Hang in there people I'm sure it will get solved 🙂

I'll report back when I find the solution.
