iPad 2 HDMI A/V adapter doesn't work on my tv

This is just a data point. It likely won't help any of you having problems, but...

I unplugged my PS3 HDMI cable and plugged it into the HDMI A/V adapter and plugged that into my iPad 2. Everything just worked. No problems at all. No 'touchiness' with position of the iPad or the HDMI Adapter, i.e. none of the problems reported in this thread.

My HDTV is a Sony Bravia KDL-46NX711.

I'm experiencing almost all the problems with the av adapter and the ipad 2.
I have a 25 ft hdmi cable running discretely from the home theater to the couch. When I plug in the ipad 2 I usually have to close the app I'm running and restart the app again. It's a constant game of plug and unplug the cable then wait. After a few minutes iOS is up and running on the big screen. One wrong move and the 30 pin connector slips out. I hope an update is in the works.

iPad 2 (iOS 4.3.1)

I had the same problem as described here. I purchased an 15 foot HDMI cable for about $11.00 Cable looked great. I tried it with my iPad 1. Plugging it (via the AV adapter plus) into a 40" HD set. I was watching Revision 3 video via the internet. The display did show and I did have sound but it locked up all the time sow it was unwatchable. I didn't try after that. I then tried it as soon as I received y iPad 2 into the same set. All I got was sound - no video. After reading all the threads I decided to purchase a new Dynx 6 foot HDMI cable. I plugged it into two different HD sets and the iPad worked just find. Great video and sound. Now the Dynx cable was about $26 versus the $11 I spent for the 15 footer. I have not been able to try the first HD set. I will next week. I have to believe; however, that the cable was the difference.

BTW, When I got my iPad 2, i backed up from my iPad one. It would appear that a the cable made the difference. I guess my advice would be to try a different HDMI cable first.

BTW, My VGA adapter also works great and mirrors just like the HDMI. The big difference is you are only getting less quality than with the HDMI.

OK so I said in my previous post that I was going to find a solution to this ...well - here goes!

After failed attempts trying to get my iPad 2 to work, as well as my iPhone 4, I decided to take my ipad2 and HDMI connection as well as my apple HDMI connection, (basically everything) that I was using to try and connect with my LG 42" LCD, purchased 6 months ago, down to my mates place and test it out on his Sony 46" which he purchased 8 months ago. Well guess what ...it freaking worked! And not just my ipad2 but my iPhone 4 as well.

I then decided to test it on his brothers 32" LG LCD TV which was purchased 2 years ago and... It worked.

I then came home and plugged it into my LG LCD and guess what? It did the freaking same thing ...no signal.

I have narrowed it down to the TV! So if you have tried everything and still no good, try another TV and see how you go!

Now to figure out why is not working with my model TV!

AV adapter works on my iPad one. However, only with youtube, safari, the photos app, the video app, but not with apps like ABC player and PBS player or video off the CNN app. Does not work with gallery app. Get sound on TV but no picture.

This is correct with the iPad 1 for video playback with the AV adapter.

Only apps that enable video playback using the AV adapter will work. The players you mention don't have this playback option with the AV adapter.

Then I think You have to check your (HDMI) settings on your TV.

I got both my iPad 1 and iPad 2 to work on two different TVs (a Samsung and an older Sharp). Here's what I did.

1. Turn on TV and have iPad off;

2. Hook up HDMI cable to Digital AV Adapter and connect end to TV;

3. Change "Source" or "Input" depending on your TV to where HDMI is plugged into;

4. Plug Digital AV Adapter into iPad. The iPad will automatically turn on. Once iPad is completely on it will mirror your home page on the TV.

I played an YouTube video, a movie, photos, etc. when it was connected.

NOTE: The connection did not work when I had the iPad on before making the above connections. In fact I had to reset the iPad once when I hooked it up with the iPad on first.

Hope this works for others. The key was having the iPad off when hooking it up to the TV.

I wasn't really sure the HDMI adapter would work with my 1080i TV, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. To my surprise, it works great. So to answer your question, the HDMI adapter will work with a 1080i TV. At least if you are using an iPad 2.

I am also unable to mirror my iPad 2 on my HDTV. My HDMI cable runs to my Denon A/V Receiver, then to the TV. I get nothing. This HDMI cable is usually plugged into my NetGear PushToTV adapter, and that works fine so I know the HDMI cable is fine. Any ideas? Possible bad adapter maybe?

Note: I will try the trick of turning off the iPad first, then connecting it like a previous poster mentioned. If that doesn't work, I'll try another HDTV. If still no go, I'll take the adapter and iPad to Apple Store to evaluate.

Nope. Starting with the iPad 2 turned off, then connecting it to the HDTV via the AV adapter doesn't work either. I'm calling support next time they are open to open a case for a hardware inspection at one of their stores. This is very disappointing.

Today I returned my Apple HDMI connector to the store!

Its not the connector or the HDMI's fault, I found that
with some model TV's it just doesn't work!

And to blame it on Apple or the LG TV (in my case) is not
right, ...why? because I don't really know who's fault it is!

It could be Apple's compatibility issue? or It could be my version
of firmware on the LG TV!

My LG''s HDMI ports do work with everything I have tested on them, PS3,
WD media player! so I know there not faulty.

I know the ipad 2 works with my other smaller LG TV, my mate's Sony and his brother's 32' LG TV, but mine is a no go, so instead of trying to play the blame game, I will be letting it go and enjoying my ipad for the reasons I brought it,
ebook reader/ light web browsing / fun apps from time to time 🙂

its sad I can't use it fully, but in my case it's not the reason I got it,
I don't do presentations and I can live without it.

Sorry to read all those stories here. I have the first iPad and the digital AV-adapter and it is working fine on my LG HD TV.

Ok folks. Here was my deal. After trying my AV adapter unsuccessfully on 3 different hdtv's, I decided to take my HDMI adapter back to the Apple Store today. They swapped it out, no problems. Now, I simply plug in the HDMI cable to the adapter then the adapter to the iPad and voila - 5 seconds later, mirroring works (no need to start with my iPad powered off). Upon further investigation (asking the dude at the Apple Store), there was a bad batch of the AV-HDMI adapters.

So if ur having problems, consider swapping your adapter out.
