iPad 2 HDMI A/V adapter doesn't work on my tv

Heads up to anyone interested in the new HDMI adapter. I bought it, excited to use it to easily show apps/games on my TV, and I just discovered that with both of my new iPad 2 units, the HDMI adapter outputs an empty black screen to the TV. Fail.

Anyone experiencing this?

I imagine that a lot of TVs simply aren't going to like to see 1024x768 over HDMI connections. Wish Apple had considered that.

Tried everything. Brought it back to the shop. They didnt believe me at first so they tried it to several tv`s and monitors. Did not work. I got a new one. At home I put it in my TV started youtube and it wa running like it should. The first adapter was definitely damaged or something like that.

Thanks for all the help!! 🙂

What you're 'missing' is that the iPad is 1024 x 768 pixels, a 4x3 format; your TV is 1920 x 1080, a 16 x 9 format. There is no way to 'Mirror' the information on the TV and fill the entire screen without distorting the picture. Your TV probably has an option to do that called "stretch" or something (it will make a 4x3 image fill the screen). So you didn't waste your money, it's working the way it's supposed to.

Just thought I'd update this thread with a cable note. I've been using the HDMI adapter successfully with a high speed Monoprice 10' cable for a few months. This was fine for the bedroom but I wanted something longer for the living room home theatre, so that I could move anywhere with plenty of slack. I also wanted to try a 28 AWG cable so it wouldn't be too heavy or bulky, I found one on Amazon and gave it a shot, it's been working fine (directly into HDMI on my Mitsubishi 73738). With the braided jacket it's still a little bulky, but nothing like the 24 AWG cables. Here's the info if anyone wants a cheap longer HDMI cable (that works on my ipad2 & TV), it's currently about 12 bucks. Oh, it also works fine on my HP laptop (full 1920 x 1080).

I had this same issue with my ipad2 connection through hdmi on My sons tv. Evening worked fine on my other tv....but as soon as I would plug into his tv and start Netflix it would say no signal on the tv and would still act like it was playing through the tv on my ipad2. I know the cables and the a adapter aren't bad bc they worked on the other tv. So the next step.... I called apple, Netflix, best buy, and radio shack. Apple makes an adapter to hook to the old component (red, yellow, white) on the back of the tv. Plugged everything in...connected to the tv..and...voila!! Everything worked. Now I agree this is upsetting that the hdmi wouldn't work. Along with the regular component adapter there is an hdmi cable with it...but no charger for the iPad. I realize this may not make us all happy....but at least it will work hopefully for everyone. This is the only option that I had left and am thrilled it worked. You can pick up the part from any store. It's $40...and I realize we all already paid the $40 for the other adapter. But now at least I don't have to drag wires around the house.

Good luck.

I am guessing you didn't change the resolution on your TV. Try to set your TV resolution to 720p or "just Scan" mode. It should work.

I got the same situation when I first got the adapter.

I bought a iPad to HDMI adapter from Cable Matters and it works fine with my ipad 2 and iPhone 4S.

I was not having success with the HDMI AV adapter with my iPad2 until I tried this:

Turn off TV and iPad

Plug HDMI adapter into iPad

Plug HDMI cable into TV

Turn on iPad and on TV

Mirroring should work. It does fail if either the TV or the iPad are on when connecting the adapter or HDMI cable. Must have something to do with the digital connection getting out of sync if both ends aren't connected before power is on.

I have an Integra DHC 9.9 AV Processor. It works just fine with my older iPad 1, but does not recognize my iPad 2. my Samsung 650 plasma screen TV will recognize the iPad 1 or 2 just fine, but the iPad 2 will not connect with the Integra processor. I really appreciate the advice and information provided by others on this discussion. It is very disappointing that the iPad 2 has serious problems connecting to AV receivers and TVs. They must have assigned the junior programmers to the HDMI interface, who managed to foul up the work done for the iPad 1. Isn't this the kind of stuff we used to complain about with MS Windows?!

I had the same problems with iPad2, but discovered the fix!! I bought the apple brand hdmi cable. At first it didn't work either, then I noticed that one end was marked "TV" and the other end "hdmi". When I changed the connections around everything worked perfectly. They should tell you that the adapter cable doesn't work with just any hdmi cable!!!!!!

Hope this helps others.

I've tried several adapters on a few different iPad 2's on a variety of TV's with a number of different HDMI cables ranging from £6 - £100.

The process is simple:

Switch tv and iPad off, plug in adapter to iPad them HDMI lead and connect to tv.

Turn tv on, turn iPad on, launch YouTube on iPad then voila!

Works every time on each set-up!

I am trying to use the IPAD2 with an HP 27 inch computer monitor that has VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs. It will ONLY work with my macbook pro using a VGA adaptor. The DVI will not work which *****. However, when I try to connect the ipad to the monitor it displays: "The IPAD will not work with this accessory." End of discussion. I have tried all the ways of connecting here, but it doesn't work. It also doesn't work using the DVI adaptor I have. The iPad2 DOES mirror on an old 23inch Cinema display I have through and hdmi-dvi adaptor. This monitor is failing and I need to replace it. Is the 27 inch HP just too big? Thanks
