iPad 2 HDMI A/V adapter doesn't work on my tv

Heads up to anyone interested in the new HDMI adapter. I bought it, excited to use it to easily show apps/games on my TV, and I just discovered that with both of my new iPad 2 units, the HDMI adapter outputs an empty black screen to the TV. Fail.

Anyone experiencing this?

I imagine that a lot of TVs simply aren't going to like to see 1024x768 over HDMI connections. Wish Apple had considered that.

i'm having the same issue. Can't believe apple would release the ipad2 with this issue after advertising hdmi/hidef capability. My hdmi input works fine with my $69 roku and my HP notebook in full 1080p mode with no issues. I even tried upgrading the firmware on my plasma tv to no avail.

Looks like this is going back and being replaced with a galaxy 10.1 if I get another tablet.

Same here. It works only sometimes. Tried on Yamaha receiver, direct to optoma projector and to Vizio 42" TV direct. The only incantation that ever worked was plugging into the Yamaha and turning on *both* the projector and the TV (the yamaha can do both simultaneously). Another clue is: regardless of output, the yamaha receiver lights with a red HDMI when it detects the iPad2. That seldom lights (it does on the rare occasions that it's all worked).

Given that hdmi is a serial bit transfer technology with some pretty complex handshaking to handle sound, various resolutions etc. I suspect that Apple either has a problem in the adapter (likely) or the iPad2 software (possible but since it works with VGA and standard video, unlikely). HDMI, however, is well defined and testing is easy. Since so many various manufactures and devices work fine and robust with HDMI, it's clear that this is an Apple iPad2 problem, and it seems that Apple is not going to fix it on the iPad2...period...ever.

Apple has a lot of smart engineers and I'm confident they've investigated this and know the problem. (Engineers have a lot of capable test equipment). Whatever the problem (adapter, software, connectors), Apple can't really say because as soon as they admit the problem (and fix), then the 10 million iPads come screaming back and sales fall off. So even with a diagnosis and/or fix, they keep silent. Bad service, good business. For now, I'm taking all of these 5 pages of posts as "the HDMI for iPad2 simply doesn't really work, well not in any reliable, useful sense".

Their customers have spent ENOUGH time diagnosing this bug of Apple's. It's a failure of the iPad2 and thus simply part of its (revised) spec. Otherwise a capable machine and worth it even without HDMI. If HDMI is required, iPad2 is the wrong product.

If keynote is required, use VGA... more commonly available anyway, as you travel.

I've had this issue, new iPad 2, new HDMI cable and new adapter.

Worked on home TV (Sony) had an important presentation to do at work and failed on an LG TV.

Tried different combos and found this solution:

Plug in HDMI cable to TV (already on) and adapter, then plug into iPad 2, then power on iPad 2 then launch YouTube.

iPad 2 goes into TV comparability mode and voila it works!

You can then close YouTube and the mirroring works as norm!

Hope this helps!

I bought the hdmi av adapter for my ipad2 and it sent only sound to the tv at first. I wiggled the cables, lugged in and out, etc. And nothing worked. Finally I launched a Netflix video and the whole thing flickered and then went to the tv and has mirrored perfectly since. So yes apple products 'just work' -- as long as you screw with them for a bit first.

Having similar problems on different equipment: possible issues hdmi version and or version of cables, what a bummer. I have an av amplifier that has hdmi input and outputs. theoretically I would plug the apple adapter into my ipad2, costly as the little buggers may be, then into my receiver (Onkyo txsr604), the receiver would get audio then the video would be output to my TV (in my case a hdmi, 1080p compatible projector[sony vpl-vw100]

messing around with all the settings, I almost had it, but alas my "mirror" on the lcd projector was pink. I tried a dvd player as well: pink, so it wasn't the iPad2 per se. I THINK IT WAS THAT MY RECEIVER is HDMI 1.1, and the projector 1.3. What that means is a whole nuther ball of wax, search it. I can get a good picture if I go straight to the projector from the ipad plus the oh so wanting to fall out all the time silly adapter over hdmi, but I cant route the digital sound to my receiver at the same time.

I will be posting elsewhere to try to resolve the perhaps unresolvable. I sometimes can get audio alone over hdmi to my receiver, for say Pandora (man it sounded good I have a pretty nice setup and pay for Pandora premium to get better quality) but I usually get the dreaded device not supported by ipad death knell. the device: my receiver need not be supported by Apple, eh? I want an app or switch or button or setting that overrides or forces audio to hdmi out versus the standard audio jack. HELP don't want to replace my receiver.

Good morning bradkaos

I bought an Onkyo AV receiver TX-NR809 (latest product of Onkyo) for christmas.

Connecting my ipad2 to it with the Apple digital AV receiver, I have no ouput.

I did what you recommended : switch off completely the Ipad, switch off the AV receiver, connect the Ipad to the HDMI input of the Onkyo AV receiver (I tried other inputs as well like Game), switch on the AV receiver, switch on the Ipad2.

On the Ipad, appears then the message "Ipad doesn't recognize this accessory".

Strangely enough, if I connect the Ipad2 directly to the (Acer) projector, it works.

I contacted the Onkyo support. They replied by mail that they receive my request but then nothing!!

I have the latest firmware on both devices.

What could explain this ? I'm disappointed because I intended to rent some on the Apple store. It makes no sense now.
