yankeegal:
i saw the same results with frustration when looking at the tracking number/website apple gives us, but i did as you did and called apple who was no help and said they would 'make a note that i had trouble' and gave me the delivery date the shipping email they sent me said: 3/21. so i called fed ex and the automated person told me i was on time for 3/18 at 4:30. i asked to be connected to a real person and that person connected me to an international representative who said my packing was en route to the states awaiting customs approval. she also verified that it would be on time as far as her knowledge.
just an FYI because I am equally frustrated. i am a full time student who is not at my apartment all the time nor do i feel comfortable in leaving my information posted on my front door for a week until i get the ipad.
hope this helps

yea, the lady i talked to seemed bothered and not very helpful, though she was firm when she said that all it has to do is clear customs but i do live on the absolute farthest part of the country in relation to alaska, if that is where its flying into. {ive heard customs/destination memphis for some] but your info might be more realistic/accurate. im going to try to be optimistic because it would be nice to have it before the weekend when i'm actually home.
basically it's a complete toss up

I ordered (2) iPad 2 64BB/Wi-fi/3G units (one white & one black), and two different smart covers for my wife and myself at 12:55am PST on March 11. Though it's clear some folks are much worse off than we are in terms of their delivery timetables (April???), here's been the ever-changing story.

Immediately upon ordering, our ship dates:

*iPad 2s*
Ships: 3 - 5 business days
Delivers Mar 18 - Mar 25 by Standard Shipping

*Smart Covers*
Ships: 1-2 Business days
Delivers Mar 16 - Mar 21 by Standard Shipping

Each and every day since, the dates have changed and grown further away from what was initially estimated, and from each other. Even the notification emails differ from what it shown online (even when checked moments apart). As of this morning ( March 17), virtually the entire order seems stalled in HK.

Current (though ever-changing) delivery timeframes:

Black iPad 2 has an ETA of 3/24
White iPad 2 is 3/25
Orange smart cover is 3/22
Black cover (which was sourced locally) is scheduled for 3/21.

Now, are these still within the quoted timeframes?--yup. But given what's been happening to others here in the forums, do I have any faith that they'll hold?--nope.

What is most upsetting is the incomprehensible 'why' of it all. Allowing pre-ordering has worked flawlessly for Apple in every previous major product launch...and set the benchmark for thousands of other product manufacturers and marketers. Yet for some reason (including speculation that the Verizon iPhone debut was not splashy enough) Apple chose to completely dump a hugely successful roll-out and distribution model? That's just plain idiocy...and for me, illustrates a scary foreshadowing of how Apple may be run in the near future.

Mine ordered 11th at 4.08am under the so called Fast Free shipping said it was due to be delivered on 22nd now showing 23rd. Thats 8 days from shipped date. I just called Apple and talked to some sales girl called Tasha who apologised 21 times in the conversation said for the 'inconvenience' she could give me a $20 credit. She just had soooo many excuses and kept saying it ships after 3-5 business days which it did, its the 'Fast Shipping' which I asked her about, not the time period before it ships, this is deceptive business practices, 8 days via Fed Ex is cheapo standard shipping the slowest they have not fast shipping. I dont want the $20 credit as I wont be buying any other apple products.

So it looks like no rush shipping for you, then. I was hoping that Apple would upgrade the shipping to make up for the delay. This is seriously the most ridiculous device launch they have ever had. I swear they deliberately keep stock low just to increase hype. I have a Xoom and wouldn't really care, but it's replacing my 1st gen iPad that I already sold and I would have liked to have received it before Friday when I go back home.

Even with this delay, I would still never go wait in a line anywhere for a device on launch day. But in the past, ordering online only resulted in a delay of a few days in getting the device.
