Hi all,

With regard to the fixes for iOS 4.x and iOS 5.x I have some good news, some not so good news, and some bad news.

The good news...

If you are still running iOS 4.x then the fix appears to be 99.9% successful (as long as you ONLY get reboots during calls).

The not so good news...

If you're running iOS 4.x and have fixed your reboot during calls problem then do not update to iOS 5 (see below). If you're running 4.3.4 or 4.3.5 then I'm afraid there is no fix; either downgrade to 4.3.3 or lower (if you can) or update to iOS 5 (but see below...)

The bad news...

The fix for reboots during calls with iOS 5 appears to be only 50% successful, which is a real shame. The feedback I've received so far sees a 50/50 split of 3GS iPhones with the same fault or that can now make calls with no problems. As a result, you can try the fix but prepare to be disappointed.

Regards,

Jonty.

I must admit, I find this whole thread pretty amazing. It is the continuation of a previous thread which was locked after 150 pages of users wrote that they have the same problem. A problem which Apple has not even responded to yet it appears. The only Apple contribution I saw was a moderator locking the thread and starting this new one due to the sheer volume of complaints.

Now, in thread number two, people are justifying why they are paying out of their own pockets to get Apple to replace the battery in the hope it will also fix their faulty iPhones. Or talking about buying repair kits of Ebay to try and fix it, because Apple won't acknowledge it.

Plus a user has taken on the role of unofficial technical support, trying to fill the void and help other users out, in the complete absence of any support from Apple themselves.

What a joke of a company. But we, the people who buy their products, are the biggest joke of all.

Thanks to Jonty Soper (and NOT to Apple 😠) I am among the happy few who could also cure the 3GS reboot problem under 5.0.1, as they did under 4.3.3.

But even if iOS 5.1 can also be jailbroken on the 3GS, I await for some feedback about the reboot cure before updating...

Shame on Apple for continuing to ignore this "small" problem (160 pages of post !!).

Hi all,

This is more of a personal update rather than a technical one, and I'm going to extend everyone the courtesy of being brief.

Without specifically checking, I've been actively involved with the 3GS rebooting during calls issue for over a year, I think, and been more than happy to exchange emails, answer questions, offer feedback, and post here on the Apple forum. However due to personal circumstances I can no longer invest such time on this topic. For those who I have been privileged to communicate with, help, discuss, and study the 3GS calls/reboot issue I am extremely grateful... and it's been wonderful to be able to inject such awareness and findings back into society -- and having helped fix 1,000+ iPhones has been very satisfying.

But as life evolves things change. I still want to help, albeit in a different capacity. With immediate effect I will no longer be able to offer personal replies and extensive help via email but instead I have created a basic webpage that people can view and use (and which I will update when I get time)...

In short, everything people need is in here, and if it's not then Google is your best friend. I will try to keep it up-to-date as best I can, but otherwise my focus is elsewhere in life now.

All the best to everyone, known or not...

Jonty.

Hi Jonty,

Thanks a lot for the great help you provided to (too) many of us, including myself, who had this same "3G reboots during telephone calls" issue.

These Apple "support" forums are only useful because of people like you, since Apple completely ignored 160 pages of posts on the same subject.

Shame on you Apple ! (again).

Guess that all of us with the "wrong" 3GS battery are now stuck with 5.0.1 unless we pay $80 for a battery replacement...

Many thanks again Jonty, fare well

JJ

PS : I had one more comment which was censored by Apple administrator. Seems Apple customers are not even supposed to help each other when Apple decides to ignore its customers problems.

Shame on you Apple ! (bis)

Hi all,

Following my post the other evening it would seem that Apple were not happy with my intention to keep helping people (albeit not via email) and removed a webpage link I'd posted. Whilst I have never breached Apple's terms and conditions I think subsequent replies containing specific words often leads to this.

For those looking for help you can look at my profile. Or use your favourite search engine and search for "3gs reboots during phone calls" and you'll find a useful page somewhere in the results.

I just regret that for the immediate future I cannot invest the necessary time in answering numerous emails and maintaining dialogue with individuals as they strive to fix this problem. One day hopefully this will change.

Regards, and good luck!

Jonty.

Hi.

This thread needs to be revived.

As sooooooo many others I also have the same problem of rebooting during calls. Have been reading much of this (and the old) thread and have come to the conclusion that Apple must be a ******** organisation.

I, as I´m sure many of you, went from the iPhone to Mac. Best computer I have ever had, a MacBook Pro. The iPhone is 2 1/2 years old. Works like a charm, EXEPT for the reboot problem.

Ten people get disappointed. They talk to ten people who in turn talk to ten people. It´s a fast development. How can Apple believe that the best strategy here is to continue to ignore this problem?

The best publicity you can have is satisfied customers. If you have that, you don´t even have to pay for publicity.

I will not buy an iPhone again, plain and simple.

I simply can´t believe that this cannot be fixed.
