Thank you to Jonty who emailed me his suggestions. I haven't tried them yet, but I have followed the suggested fix here: http://xsellize.com/topic/98630-iphone-3gs-32gb-factory-unlocked-reboots-5-7mins -on-call-probable-fix/
So far, today, I have made & received several calls over 5 mins without issue. One call over 13 minutes.
I'll report back with progress.

I've been following this thread since iOS 4 ruined my phone in the vain hope that Apple might do something to fix it. No such luck. I've now followed the above advice on xsellize and so far, it's worked!
Ridiculous that it should come to this, but at least I can now use my phone as a phone. Silly of me to think that should be the case. Also, calendar on my lockscreen and Simpsons text sounds! It's like having a new phone! Which is exactly what will happen at the end of my contract, and it certainly won't be an Apple.
Anyway, thanks for posting the link, and to all others still frustrated, read up on the changes and have a go!

Have read Jontys posts with interest - my problems seem to have started AFTER upgrading a battery though (although this may have been a coincidence with a new ios upgrade as well) I can't really be sure.

Shortly after the battery upgrade noticed the phone kept randomly resetting during calls. Since then I have tried Jontys other fix of taking the sim out, restarting and then putting it back in.

I actually thought that worked, but have recently had 2 resets after 2 minute calls. v annoying.

as a last resort I think I will deconstruct the phone and battery again and see if that works. If that doesn't work then I have no other choice other than a rollback or jailbreak - will probably jailbreak as am finding this situation and the lack of any fix from apple very frustrating! arghhhgghg.

Hi all,

Just wanted to report the same issue with an early 32Gb 4GS (out of warranty) rebooting during calls after about 4/5 mins into call.. This started as soon as I'd updated to iOS 4.1 from 3.1.3: phone was not jailbroken. Tried the usual restores; sim out reboot; Orientation locks; Nofications off; Wifi off, 3G calls off; everything I could think of off; starting call with no recent apps showing etc - no luck.

Eventually, jailbroke my 'phone, (which I did not want to do,) and replaced mobilewatchdog file with the 3.1.3 version and . . . . now I have a working 'phone again, Hurrah, just as good as it ever was.

Don't see why Apple can't issue an iPhone2,1_4.3....Restore.ipsw file on request with the 3.1.3 mobilewatchdog file included. Like everyone else I'm very dissappointed with Apples lack of response to this issue, which as far as I'm concerned, they caused by the iOS 4.... onwards update.

BTW, before I tried the file MobileWDG replacement, UK Genius Bar guy said they could replace the battery for £55, but he'd never heard of the issue, so couldn't guarantee it would fix the problem. He also admitted that they don't actually replace the battery as it takes too long: they just give you a reconditioned 'phone. I guess that's not a quotable quote. I declined the offer as even £55 is too much to fix a 'phone that Apple broke.

Thanks to Jonty and others for advice shown in this forum.

After the most recent update it seems that the death-on-call might be fixed.

All I've done is to update to iOS 4.3.3, and did so by 'restoring' the iPhone with the new software and the reloaded all my data from backup. I tried the same procedure with previous versions of the iOS and it never fixed the rebooting.

It's nice to see the phone working again. It would've been much better, though, if Apple had let us know that this fix was included. Or is it just pure chance in my case?
