My solution is posted here. To date, this solution was tested/confirmed working on 16 iPODs (most of same 2nd gen 8GB model). As with a few people on this forum, my test subjects were skeptical about the idea of Airplane mode AND WiFi being on simultaneously... but it works on the firmware stated.

Question anyone: How/why did the link I posted on May 15, 2011 10:06 AM change (and become invalid)?

@franzkaiser: I need to know more about Gamecenter. I am happy to look into what is occurring when it is activated. Please give me an example/steps involved in what you feel causes heavy battery drain (while on standby).

From my previous posts: Update for battery loss. NO LONGER AN ISSUE... read on

Airplane Mode and WI-FI are enabled, and I am able to access all websites!

Airplane mode, seems to shut off WIFI when Itouch4 is in sleep mode. Once I awake the Itouch, WIFI kicks in.

Turnoff in-app purchases. How, go to: .

Go to Settings>General>Restrictions, turn off In-App purchases.

It will ask for a password, which doesn't need to be the same as your lock password.

Also disabling location in some apps help. This is a biggie!

Also turn off auto mail. And stop mail push/pulls. You can still check you mail manually, when necessary.

Airplane mode and WI-FI can both be enabled, and you can still use Safari.

If you read my earlier posts, you'll discover that I suspected my router may be causing issues. Why? Well, i bounce back and forth from NY to Fl and notice that when in FL, my ITOUCH suffers extreme battery loss. this was driving me crazy, so Iran tests for 6 months. each test proved the same!

Well, I just upgraded my old netgear router for G to N and guess what!? NO BATTERY LOSS in Florida!!! So, I was correct in assuming my FL router was causing a drain.

So, if u follow my steps above and check out a different router, that may be your issue and it's easily solved!!

PS: For those using ITOUCH 4 with latest OS, try enabling airplane mode, with wifi enabled. It works for me.

It may be less epensive than buying anew router -- Give it a shot!

I have had a similar problem with iPod Touch. This solution has worked three times, following three iOS updates. There appears to be an "update" problem; i.e., updates DO NOT always install correctly. This was confirmed by a Genius at my local Apple store.

If you are having problems with battery not maintaining a charge after a software update, do the following:

1) synch your iPod

2) do a "restore" after the synch - be sure to restore as NEW, not as back-up. This will take a while; be patient.

3) do a synch of the iPod once the restore has completed

My local Genius seems to have fixed my problem. Before taking her advice, my 4G iPod Touch required a battery recharge every other day even with minimal use. After her advice, it now runs more than a week without requiring a recharge with the same amount of usage.

Her advice: She observes that 90% of the people she helps with such a problem do not realize that system 4.x.x multitasks and closing a window does not turn off the application (I was part of that 90%). They continue to run even though not visible on the screen and chew up battery life. Some worse than others. She double-clicked the home key and showed me that virtually every app I had ever opened was still running (after the double click everything you see in the bottom row is still running). She showed my how to turn off the apps by touching and holding one of the apps in the bottom row. They start wiggling and little minus signs show up at the top left of the icon. Touch the minus sign and the app turns off. She said it was particularly important to make sure that apps which use IP voice are turned off - things like Facetime and Talkatone and Google Voice. Some of the early versions of those apparently can keep wifi running even if you turn wifi off in Settings. As a final step she suggested resetting network connections (Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings). This sends your iPod Touch through a black screen, ghost apple process and it comes out with a clean network interface. You will have to "retrain" your Touch for all of the networks you use by re-inputting all of your passwords as you reconnect to the networks. A small price to pay for a dramatic improvement in battery life.

I turn off apps after use now with the home key double-click process. I leave Wi-Fi on and do not turn on Airplane mode and am back to the original battery life. Hope it works for you.
