I agree, we can turn off everything, hey, we can shut off the iPhone completely and only turn it on in emergencies, that would save a lot of battery power.
Shutting off 3G may work for most of the World, but for us in North America, in many places 3G is the cell sevice we get. No GSM.
Shutting off all of Wifi, B-t, etc is akin to buying a Lamborghini and then granny-driving it to save fuel.
Another factor to consider if your battery runs down fast: In poor signal coverage areas, that can happen even in the city if you work or spend much time in a metal structure building or a basement, the battery drains fast. From my experience, in a NO SERVICE area, my phone runs down to 30% in one day. Note that the same was the case with other smart and plain phones I had in the past. That is because the radio is using full power to stay in touch with the cell tower.
If you travel or work in a no-coverage area the best thing is to put the iPhone in airplane mode. Wifi and B-t can be then enabled separately if you need them.
By the way, "no-service" may be that you are travelling in a foreign country where you have no roaming agreement, or if your roaming is disabled.
