iPad 2 not charging when connected to PC

I have an iPad 2 in which if I connect it to my PC it doesn't charge, but when I connect to my Mac it charges. It can sync and transfer files from my PC, detects the device on iTunes, but on my iPad it says not charging. What should I do?

PC, Windows 7

Most computers don't provide enough power via their USB ports to be able to charge the iPad (first or second version), though they may charge it slowly if the iPads screen is off. It's more reliable, and quicker, to use the wall charger.

2007 was a long time ago. I think the current Macs provide enough current.

By the way, for those who are wont to talk about voltage, the voltage is still the same old 5VDC that USB has always been. All the has changed is the current that those ports will supply, in units of 100mA up to 500mA (USB 2.0), units of 150mA up to 900mA (USB 3.0), or 1.5A (new +Battery Charging Specification+*). This is determined by the version of the specification that is being followed and a negotiation process between the device and the host hardware. Up to 1.8A can be supplied and drawn for a dedicated charging port (like the wall adapters). At 5.25V this is 9.5W. The iPad wall adapter seems to take this to (or even a bit beyond) the limit, supplying 5.1V × 2.1A = 10.7W.

*For the battery charging spec see the document cited here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniversalSerial_Bus#citenote-battchargespec-39

It's wierd - I had an iPad 1, no problem charging it from USB on my 4 year old (late 2007?) Dell inspiron 1720. Likewise my iPhone 3gs charges perfectly off any PC, including this one.

However my new iPad 2 (OS 4.3.3) just displays "Not Charging" from the same Dell laptop, so requires A/C charge. Disappointing, bit oif a step backwards, as the power cable is short enough that it's largely useless when being charged - my powerr points are not convenient for seats. And I prefer to leave large items charging only when I'm around, e.g. not overnight - old habit having seen an electrical fire once!

Other than Asus drivers (which I'm passing on), does anyone know more? I believe my laptop is using USB2.

Any thoughts?

>Because Apple has designed their computers to output the necessary amount of power to charge the iPad. PC manufacturers have not.<

That's just goofiness. I have 2 USB powered 500 gig removable drives, PLUS my iphone 4 (charging fine), plus a heat fan plugged into ONE of my USB ports (with a non powered splitter or whatever they're called). On the other 2, one is charging my MiFi router, one is charging my old iphone 3gs.

btw, this is a 3 year old Core2Duo PC laptop running Windows 7/64.

Any you're telling me it can't power the tiny battery on an iPad?

Only macs can do this?

Come on. Please. Let's get real here. Someone at Apple was asleep.

Charging Tips

The quickest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

I have the same problem on my Intel-based Mac - the iPad 2 says Not Charging when directly connected to the Mac. I thought it was a cable problem at first, but it's not, and the iPad cannot use other power adapters from Apple either... it's specific to the one that shipped with the iPad. Grrr!!! I suppose there's no possible charger for use in a car either...

It can use the other power adapters from Apple. Our iPad 2 charges just fine with the small square adapters that came with our iPhones. It just charges much more slowly because the massive batteries in the iPad require a lot of juice.

Believe it or not, it even charges when plugged in to your computer too, just not while it's awake, because there isn't enough power to both charge and run the screen. But plug it in, put it to sleep, and leave it there overnight, and you'll see that it does charge. And, from the point of view of long-term battery life, the slower the charge the better anyway. I nearly always use slow USB charging instead of any of the wall adapters for this reason.

I downloaded the program Electricfx recommended onto my new Asus laptop and now I get a blue screen every 10 minutes and my laptop restarts itself. I uninstalled the program but it didn't work properly. It is still apparently there though but won't let me uninstall. Now I have to figure out how to stop my laptop crashing every 10 minutes. 😟
