iPad 2 not charging when connected to PC

I have an iPad 2 in which if I connect it to my PC it doesn't charge, but when I connect to my Mac it charges. It can sync and transfer files from my PC, detects the device on iTunes, but on my iPad it says not charging. What should I do?

PC, Windows 7

Most computers don't provide enough power via their USB ports to be able to charge the iPad (first or second version), though they may charge it slowly if the iPads screen is off. It's more reliable, and quicker, to use the wall charger.

Add the Dell m1330 with w7sp1 to the list. I have both my ipod touch (gen4) and ipad2 hooked up and they are both charging with the asus thing. It's only been a couple hours but it seems pretty stable. Did the restore point thing too, just in case it decides to go funky on me. Added 3% RAM usage, but hasn't really affected performance on a fresh reboot.

Thanks for advice here. Im on a work trip, have my company PC (think pad) which is locked down (can't install the discussed power mgmt patch). I turned on computer, plugged in ipad2, and left it overnight. Despite the fact that it said "not g" when I left it, it was 100 pct charged by morning. Assume it slowly charged after the PC monitor shut off. Thanks, you saved my sanity (4 days w no music!!). Eric

More like it slowly charged while the iPad screen was off. The 500mA available on a standard USB port does not appear to be enough to run the giant screen and charge the giant battery. So the iPad recognizes that it is plugged in, but that's it's not enough power to do everything it would normally do when plugged in. Either that, or there is a slow charge even in that state but it's so slow that Apple decided to tell you it's not charging.

Either way, yes, this method works fine and a slower charge is slightly better for the battery anyway.

The "not charging" indication when plugged into a PC or older Apple USB port is not a defect/fault, so no fix is needed. As explained above, if you turn off or put iPad to sleep you'll still get a slow charge.

If you're getting that indication when plugged into Apple's official iPad charger (i.e., the 10-watt charger), or even the 1-amp iPhone wall charger, then there is an issue and you should discuss it with someone at the Genius bar.

I'm not sure what you guys are experiencing but I can plug my iPad2 into any laptop/desktop and it charges without problem. As many have mentioned, it does go to sleep and when I'm charging my iPad, I don't use it...after all, how can you? Apple has the shortest cables I've ever had to deal with and who wants to use a tablet computer with a cable hanging off of it 🙂.

As for those folks using the patch from ASUS...I can say this. Unless you know exactly, EXACTLY, what you are doing AND you have an ASUS montherboard on your computer, be very careful. After 13 years of building/repairing computers (all brands, including Apple), I would highly recommend not installing an ASUS patch on a non-ASUS system. Just saying.

If it is a hardware issue then why when I bootcamp my MacPro I can not charge from Windows or VM a Windows Session. It only charges with Mac OSX. Even have a brand new dell laptop with USB 3.0 ports also USB 2.0 ports that it will not charge on, Only the ipad is effected. iPhone, no problem, iPods, no problem. iPads problem. I only this issues once upgrading to iOS 5.0.1. Did not happen under iOS 4 or iOS 5.0.0
