As you think this is important, and would be useful, you should be letting Apple know that. Here you're talking to users of the application, not the designers or others on the development team. To send a message directly to Apple, and from there to the Pages developers, go to the Application menu (in Pages, the "Pages" menu), choose Provide Pages Feedback, and make a feature request that a Save button be added to the user interface for this application.
Briefly describe what it would do and to whom it would be a useful feature.

Apple was not trying to recreate MS Word, Adobe, or Windows applications with any release of Pages. The functionality is on the File menu, where it is with all other OS X applications.
Yet they did include the following buttons, at least on the version I have: View, Zoom, Insert, Table, Chart, Text, Shape, Media, Comment, Share, Tips, Format and Document. There's room for Save.
