Just a clarification, Google, Inc. Acquired Postini in 2007.
Normally I use my imac to check email and save important ones there. Occasionally I would like to check email using my ipad2. The problem is I get all the emails I have already read and now need to delete a lot again. A delete all function would be VERY useful for me rather than having to select each one and then delete.
Periodically, my phone will somehow forget that about 3000 messages have already been downloaded and will suddenly want to get them all again. These can date back weeks, and so I have to go through one at a time deleting them. I use POP for the same reasons others have expressed. I have my Gmail accounts set up to collect "recent" mail only, but still, this glitch pops up from time to time. Most recently, it occured today after upgrading to iOS 5. A simple 'delete all' button, like the one we get in the Trash, is all we're asking for, Apple. People don't have to use it, but it would be nice to have, no?
My problem is not spam. I sit at a desktop computer all day and read my mail there. I may not use the iPad for a day or 2. When I do use it, I might have 500+ emails sitting in 5 different accounts. In one of the accounts, I want to select all and delete everything. In the other accounts, I want to select all and mark them all as read.
As it is, the iPad's email program lacking some criticle functionality. The email on my Droid is way better.

Go to settings, email, delete account. Worked like a charm. I have no need to have the iPad manage my mail when gmail already does it for me.
Amen!
Keeping the topic on task: Mail on the iPad (iPhone) needs a simple, elegant, DELETE ALL function.
My two cents. I get hundreds of emails of people checking in code, code line branching and reviews. I move critical emails to folders after review. I want and need to delete the rest after a short review of the emails. Three days of work emails is 395. Check check check check scroll... Check check check scroll. Delete.... Edit check check check check delete. It sure would be nice to select all and then uncheck the ones I have to keep.

This is exactly the problem I have. My Business accounts are all POP and my personal accounts are all on Comcast, which last I looked, doesn't provide IMAP accounts. I don't want to change ALL my email accounts just because Apple is being stubborn about putting a Select/Delete All button in iOS Mail. This is a not-so-subtle attempt by Apple to force you into using their IMAP product.
I have been asking for this since since the beginning of iOS Mail... so please don't ask me to submit ANOTHER request.
There is a solution... two that I know of. It just requires shopping in an alternative app universe. Apple should NEVER wonder why people go that route.
Oddly, I'm a big fan of Apple and its products. But sometimes in the name of purity, they can be incredibly dense.
yes, a "delete all" button is the least we can ask for, no matter if some people receive 10 mails a day and don't need it.
I really don't understand what kept apple dev team from implementing such a needed basic function!?!?
