Why no Select All in email?

With no spam filter and a very shaky mail program the least Apple could have done was provided a select all option in the mail preview pane to assist in deleting spam -- which is about 90% of what I get in iPad2. Mail always hangs for me as well.

The other thing that seems to be missing is any sort of "rules" facility which, in one form or another, I though were pretty standard in eMail clients.

With both these features absent, iPad Mail is really just a toy. It seems a curious oversight on Apple's part - that is if one believes they ever have "oversights" Onethought did occur to me .... The possible ambiguity of "select all" given that the iPad seems to only fetch a few messages from the server at a time. So the implementation isn't totally trivial.

The other thought is that perhaps Apple does not want iPads used for serious work as that might detract from MBA sales.

It does seem to me quite reasonable that, whether iPad or not, one might organize ones mail differently on a "secondary" device compared to one's main computer - the same broad categories but less detailed or no sub- folders for example.

Either way, we need a simple way to manage different categories of mail.

I hope those at Apple will be able to find a quick solution. I am hocked up with mutiple apple devices that and I spend too much valuable time deleting.

Thanks,

It's called Mail Enhancer Pro. Google it... but you will have to JB first. It solves most problems people have with Apple Mail in iOS. It is plain to me that these solutions aren't coming from Apple.

Good Luck.

Another vote for a select all/delete function. Just manually deleted over 1200 messages. Awful! Like others, I use my desktop to manage mail, but like to glance on the iPad to see if there's anything important...after a week, I'd like to trash everything. All my mail is on my outlook client--yes, Outlook. Most are trashed, others are ruled into specific folders.

Please apple...provide this BASIC capability

This should do it:

for(int c = 0; c < [inboxArray count]; c++)

{

[[inboxArray objectAtIndex: c] doPageFlipThingyThatAlsoSelects];

}

Geez, I would like to know why this line of code, or is it space for another button, was left out. Tried to write this simple code on iPad earlier today. Didn't realize that page flip thingy was an important part of the message select function. Also had a hard time typing code on this thing. Went back to trusty PC to work on my Flash iPad app and solve this problem. Need to open hackintosh to make Mac Air app of Flash game. I almost got caught up in the Flash is dead syndrome, but couldn't get my game coded in Objective C without a minor math bug. I know it is my fault, not Apple's, but went back to doing it with Flash because it is easy, elegant and most importantly, it works! Unlike Apple Mail on iPad using POP. I do love this iPad though! Objective C should have never used those straight brackets for function calls. That should be for arrays only. Duh.

Flash Actionscript wins hands down to Objective C. Mutators and Accessors in Objective C are nice though. Dot Syntax guys!

Unless you're replying to the person above who is unclear on what this post is referring to, it seems that more than one person in this thread is not clear what is being requested. It is true, that once you have manually, one at a time, selected each email you'd like to delete, you can then 'delete all' of them. However, there is no function that allows you to 'select all' of them and then 'delete all' of those that you have selected. What is being requested is a 'select all' feature, simliar to that which has been part of any number of email programs for Mac since the dawn of email time.

Thank you Robert! I agree. I googled "ipad select all option with mail" and was brought to this forum. It can be done in the trash portion of the mail....why not all the others. Getting rid of a piece of mail seems a l.engthy and redundant process on my mobile devices. The method seems archiac considering the caliber of technology.

I hope Apple listens.

Wow! Your a patient guy. : )

I don't get what they don't get.

I feel the same way.

It's a slow torturous process to get rid of email on my devices. I feel like I need to hire someone to do it. I get so sick of tapping 2-300 emials to the trash every month. It's another 'housekeeping' chore brought on by the devices meant to make my life easier!

It depends on how you have your email account set up, but you don't have to manually delete every single email, when you can let the Mail program do it for you, after one day, one week or one month. It works for me with both POP mail and Yahoo mail. I don't know about GoogleMail since I have that setup through Exchange server method, which is different. POP 3 and Yahoo I have set to auto delete after a week, since I have my main computer set up to store them. I don't need to store 'em on my phone.
