Sent mail sometime NOT going to sent mail folder.

Mail has recently started showing an odd problem. I'm using IMAP and my own email account hosted on a server.

About 40% of the time when I send mail from my Mac the sent message takes a long time (a minute or more) to send and doesn't get stored in the "sent" folder on my server. The email is sent and received OK.

The next mail will work perfectly and gets stored in the sent box on the server.

I don't see this issue when sending to the same account from my iPad or iPhone.

Last week my hosting was moved to a new server - I had hoped this would resolve the issue - but the problem remains.

So the common factor is the mail app.

Any suggestions?

THanks Bjorn...

I'm currently testing with the IP address set as suggested - too early to tell if it will resolve problem.

My BB is 30 Meg - so not convinced the issue can be pinned down to the connection being slow.

I'm keeping the thread open and will post my own results.

Thanks all for input so far!

anybody have an update to this thread ? Same thing happening to me..

I just switched my companies email to imap.. Some users are still in snow leopard and some in lion. Everyone is complaining about losing emails.. Either typing a new one or replying to an old.. I notice when it happens it looks like the email gets hung up a little in the activity bar .. Then it whooshes out and 1 of 3 things happens... 1. the email is lost forever.. its not in sent folder either up on the rackspace server or locally on our machines. This means we have to be careful to check that each and every email we send actually makes it to the sent box. if its a new email it has to be typed over. 2. the receiver sometime gets it but mostly does not.. and sometimes, not sure if this is even related ,an outgoing email just ends up in drafts and does not get sent out the first try. This happens haphazardy, but we are trying th isolate the problem... Our mac metwork consultant is at a loss at the moment..

All outgoing settings have been checked and rechecked and are correct.. We have these variables, macmail, rackspace maiil hosting, cablevision ISP, ethernet and or airport wireless networks.. As you can well imagiine this is not good for our business..

Anybody have any additional insight?

Before switching ISPs I needed to reorganize my LAN here. Because of that I noticed that my WLAN access point was not placed optimally. I had usually a good connection (around 100 Mbps), but it sometimes dropped dramatically due to interference. After optimizing this the problem was gone for me! A few weeks ago I switched my ISP and now am on a 50 Mbps connection (was 1 Mbps before). The problem has not re-occured. So at least at my site it was indeed caused by an unrealiable network. I’m not saying that this is the case everywhere this problem pops up, but I can be pretty sure to have ruled out an ISP problem.

I would suggest to double-check all involved gear (WLAN access points, Ethernet switches, cabling, etc.). It sure would be nice if Mail would not give up so easily and just try to put the mail into the outgoing store again at a later time instead of just skipping it completely if it does not succeed…

Hope this helps a bit.

Dear freinds,

I experience the exactly same problem! There is no need to describe it again, because it's just what you have said in your previous posts and it happens with the same frequency.

I don't really like the internet connection explanation. The internet connection it’s the one it is – I really can’t do nothing about it and you don’t experience such a problem with other mail clients. Doesn’t apple think just to fix the issue? It’s crazy to loose sent e-mail! You pay 3,000 dollars for a MAC BOOK Pro (this is the price in Eastern Europe) and you loose part of your sent mails… ***? Are you kidding me?!

Sorry for not behaving rationally but for me it’s crazy someone to experience such a problem in early 2011 and one year latter there is not a post here, where an apple guy comes to say – “dear clients, excuse us for the inconvenience, the problem has been solved, just update to the new mail client version”.

Best,

Jeko

After going back and forth with rackspace (email hosting company) engineers and CSR's for two weeks, I finally got applecare involved... The issue has been escalated to apple engineering and I am waiting for a phone call back to see how to proceed from here.. I will let you know the outcome.. To apend my post above... the receiver always receives the mail while the send does not get a copy either locally in macmail or on the server in webmail..

By the way, this problem does not affect outlook users or thunderbird mail client users in my office... We have also created new users on computers with fresh installs, installed alternate email clients and have come to the conclusion without a doubt that this is a mail bug and has nothing to do with internet or connectivity as someone suggested above.

Hi, I have also spent literally days with apple care trying to resolve identical issues.

I am expecting a call tomorrow morning from my guy and will post if I get a result.

the problem was helped by synching mailboxes on both my machines - which meant getting rid of a few on one of them but now its back with a vengeance and last night my calendars stopped synching

I also have a krap speed but am not convinced that this is the problem and cant be sure but I think this started once I had installed LION, would appreciate anyones comment . Cheers
