Sent mail sometime NOT going to sent mail folder.

Mail has recently started showing an odd problem. I'm using IMAP and my own email account hosted on a server.

About 40% of the time when I send mail from my Mac the sent message takes a long time (a minute or more) to send and doesn't get stored in the "sent" folder on my server. The email is sent and received OK.

The next mail will work perfectly and gets stored in the sent box on the server.

I don't see this issue when sending to the same account from my iPad or iPhone.

Last week my hosting was moved to a new server - I had hoped this would resolve the issue - but the problem remains.

So the common factor is the mail app.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mitchell,

Got a response from engineering and they stated they have seem similar reports on this issue and are sending the issue to our mail team and that in the meantime to keep working with the email provider but on apple behalf the issue is under investigation. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Josie.

Neil,

my best is that it’s a bug in Mail.app which occurs under some circumstances. I can’t be sure, but in my case I monitored the wireless signal strength both via alt-clicking on the menu bar item and via Airport Utility’s Advanced tab. I noticed that it was not steady all the time and rearranging the access point’s orientation and changing settings (i.e. 802.11n only since there are no more legacy devices here) seems to have done the trick. I can’t be sure though, since I also changed my setup (main router, internal DNS server, etc.)

If you want to just rule out your wireless connection I’d suggest to disable Wi-Fi (i.e. via the menu bar item) and hook up your Mac using Ethernet. Ideally you could even replace the router with a modem and set up PPPoE on your Mac, but this would be a bit drastic, even when just for testing purposes… 😐

It definitely is not related to the OS version. At least in my case it happened as well in 10.6 and was happening in 10.7 as well until the mentioned reorg.

I agree. I have had this problem in 10.5.8 (Mail 3.6) for a very long time. I have driven my mail provider nuts trying to find a solution but they are adamant their service is fine. I have never had a problem sending from their webmail interface.

To confirm, this is an occasional quirky failure rather than something which is fundamentally broken. I have found it to be independent of location (read: ISP), infrastructure (including Ethernet and WiFi) and individual device (I use several G4 Powerbooks running 10.5.8 in multiple domestic and professional environments).

Anecdotally, I feel that I am most susceptible to the problem when I send an email that I have been writing/pondering over for quite a while. I have taken to trying to remember to do a 'check new mail' *before* I send (in an effort to reset the connection) and in these instances, I do not believe I have lost an email. However, I don't always remember to do this and still suffer the problem from time to time.

Most annoying to hear that it is still a problem in newer OSes. How sad that I can't look forward to being rid of this problem when I finally get around to 'upgrading'! :-/

In summary, my opinion is that this is a problem with Mail.app which has been about for a very long time.

I spent another 2 hours with Apple support yesterday and my first impression that I am now repaired!!

My problem appeared to be 2 as opposed to 1 Preference folders. To get around it we renamed the later one and after a huge amount of data moved down my feeble connection everything now looks OK

Having said that, if its a false dawn I will be back on here.

Oh and I plugged a wire from my wireless router to my imac and it made a huge difference to my speed reliability.

Good luck guys.
