I seem to have this problem as well. Bought a used computer, and the owner warned me about what they claimed to be a 'small issue', which I wasn't even supposed to notice. When we checked the laptop together, the discoloration was not visible. Now, however, it is getting annoying, so I might have to replace the screen and/or the logic board. What might the repair costs be if the laptop is no longer covered under AppleCare/warranty? The owner gave me an extra discount due to the discoloration problem, but it's not even close to the amounts mentioned in this thread, obviously.
I was covered under AppleCare, oftheshore. But the repair listed (a screen/clamshell replacement) totaled $300 for me. Don't know if it's worth it to you to fix, but it'll cost around that I imagine.
Mine was fixed under warranty, but the Genius told me it would have cost around $300. Hope this helps!
Thank you, Mike and Steven, this seems to be the cost mentioned on some other pages as well.
I find it incredibly annoying, so I will just try and get it fixed later, when I can afford it. Otherwise, it's a very powerful customized machine, and I'd like to keep it for a while until I can buy a brand new one.
One last question though - I know this depends on a lot of factors, but how long did the replacement take?
My repair cost about $450 each time. I realized after reading that others cost $300 that mine was probably more because I have the anti-glare screen. Since the anti-glare cost me $150 more than the standard when I purchased it, I'd assume the same $150 difference in replacement.
So that means that if you have the regular screen it's probably going to be $300, if you have the high-res glossy display $400, and if you have the hi-res matte $450.
Maybe Mike and Steven can provide their experience if this happened, but I had the same problem again after replacing the screen, so I might be careful putting money into something that will happen again, but it depends on how bad your discoloration is.
It took me about 3 business days each time to get it back, but they said they would have had it in 24 hours but didn't have the anti-glare clamshell in stock.
I have a Mac Book Pro with the same problem and no more applecare this is very dissapointing as my computer is around 1 1/2 years old and it seems like a design flaw and cost almost 2500$ brand new. This is the second mac laptop I have had that has had issues right after the warranty expired. Any chance this might just turn into a recall?
I'm in exactly the same position as you. Just over 1.5 years old with the hi-res matte screen. Mine's more noticeable in the bottom-right corner, but bottom-left has it too. Knew I'd regret not going for extended apple care.
