Airplay and Home sharing are very slow

The Netflix and Youtube which need Internet access work really good, but when I airplay videos stored in my iphone 4 or play videos in my iTunes library through home sharing, the playing speed is really really slow, it always takes several minutes to buffer. It's really annoying @@

Is there any one has similar situation as me and can provide some useful solutions? Thanks!

The ios version of my iphone 4 is 4.21, Apple TV 2 version is 4.1.1

I have the exact same problem. Everything is on its latest version as well as firmware. Everything I have are Apple products, neverthelss, streaming video through Airplay from my iMac is so slow that I finally gave up. Streaming video from an iTunes rented movie, show, from Netflix, HD Vimeo videos work great! I've search everywhere and I still don't have the answer. I've tried directly through Apple support, but they have replace my Apple Tv's aand still have the same issue. I have 3 ATV 2 and all of them have the same issue.

I rmember it used to work a while ago, but now it's not workingand I'm very frustrated.

In Australia, we have capped internet usage which means when you exceed your monthly quota, the internet drops to 256kbps. I have noticed that whenever I exceed my quota that home sharing with the Apple TV (ATV2) becomes so slow that we are unable to watch anything that is already in iTunes on our Mac on our local disks.

No idea why internet speed should affect home sharing, but it seems to. If there is no internet, it seems fine. It is the slow internet that seems to cause ATV2 all the problems. FYI: Using 5ghz Apple Extreme Base Station and everything is fine when internet is not being capped.

My setup: ATV 2 and iMac Late 2006 and Airport Extreme BS. Three levels at home - Mac on top floor, AEBS on middle floor, ATV on ground floor.

I noticed that anytime my ATV reported less than full wi-fi connectivity that home sharing was terrible. Youtube and move previews would actually stream better than home sharing.

I tried using an Airport Express to extend the range, which helped the iPhones & iPad, but not the ATV.

I was showing good wi-fi connectivity on the ATV, but not great. I ended up moving the AEBS so that it was positioned closer to the ATV. As soon as the ATV wi-fi connection improved, home sharing improved. It is now running fine with no complaints (famous last words...I hope this doesn't jinx it for me!)

After about a month of great connectivity, the AEBS was moved about 1 metre which caused the wi-fi to drop a dot on the ATV and the terrible home sharing came back. As soon as I moved the AEBS back, home sharing was again perfect.

Hey all,

I realize this post is a few years old, but I was having this issue recently and managed to solve it for me. My Apple TV was just getting slower and slower. I thought maybe it was my internet connection, but when I tried to stream a movie from my iTunes locally and it had to buffer for 5 minutes, I knew something more was up.

WHAT WORKED FOR ME: Factory resetting the Apple TV brought me back to my original video speeds. Yes, it's annoying to have to re-login to all of your services, but for me it was completely worth it to have a functioning device back.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, soerenkroeger!!

My problem with ATV had gone away, like in other cases, for no solid reason. It came back this week to haunt me, but with the tip of turning off the old sharing (see the link soerenkroeger shared for more details), access time is lightning fast again.

Not sure it did anything for my AirPlay, though. It seem unaffected by the change... 😟
