Can't delete Finder sidebar folder

Hi,

i currently wonder how to delete a specific item from the sidebar. The Problem is: the folder does not exists on the FileSystem anymore, therefore i cannot click it. I can drag it around, reorder the sidebar, but i cannot move it out of the finder window.

is there any plist file or something helping me to remove this folder?

Thanks in advance!

It happened to me with the dropbox folder alias.... it was a pain to discover how to remove it /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/m igration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/mig ration-img-not-avail.png User uploaded file 🙂

#1 Go to "/Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/" folder
#2 Open "com.apple.sidebar.plist"
#3 Find the undesired item and remove it.

I think that you have to log off so the changes can take effect (can't remember) /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png 🙂

Yeah, command + drag was to remove Finder windows from toolbars, but I guess this is new for Finder sidebars. This makes more sense because I always found myself accidentally dragging things off my sidebar.

Right click to remove sidebar items doesn't seem to work if the original folder no longer exists. In that case, only the plist and command + drag method will work.

Same frustration for me. The Command works great for existing folders, but not for ones where the link is broken. But I think I just stumbled on the solution. Without pressing any key, drag the broken-link folder out of the sidebar. THEN press the Command key, and you'll see the little cloud appear. The link will disappear. I just cleared out six old folders which I couldn't get rid of, even going to the plist in the Library. Good luck!

To go further with this thread, FYI you can do a similar thing with the menu bar items near the time and date. Hold Command down first, select one, and you can drag it off with a poof. Add them back from the System Prefs pane that has the option of showing in the menu bar. I don't think this works every time for 3rd party apps that put an icon in the menu bar.

And of course you can also drag items off the Dock with a poof with no modifier keys.

Yay Topper!

I have been on the phone with Apple support for almost 40 minutes! The first guy couldn't help me out. He had me trash the finder plist and the com.apple.finder cache. But that didn't solve anything. So we were waiting for a senior level staff to become available.

But Thanks to me doing some googling on my own I stumbled across your answer!

I just removed one a few moments ago

i clicked on the folder and as I clicked I then dragged it towards the dektop with the command key held down

It showed a puff like it should , it took about three tries and then it was gone

The command key was the trick

It is a little tougher with just the laptop keyboard as far a scoordination

but I guess 18 years of 12 houers days on a Mac and a Pc finally paid off.
