iPhone 4 heat and battery issues

My iPhone 4 for the last few days has started to get very hot in use and the battery is gone very bad. Leaving the phone on standby can see the battery drain nearly 20% in an hour. This is gone to the stage where I have to turn it off at times just to save battery during the day. It only began to happen when I updated to iOS 4.3. I updated to iOS 4.3.1 yesterday and it still has the same issues. Anyone else having the same problem?

If you have an Exchange email account you probably have some stale sync threads. Try this:

Go to Settings/Mail,contacts,calendar. Tap the name of the account. Turn off the 3 switches. Back out to the main settings page. Now launch mail, then contacts, then calendar to kill the pending connections. Reboot the phone, go back to Settings, and turn the 3 switches back on. This will probably fix it.

If not post back; there's more that could be causing it.

Just going to let everyone know that this fixed my problem... I woke up up one morning and my iphone4 would not stay charged more than 3 hours until I reset the mail, contacts, calendar settings.

Now my phone is staying charged all day again. Thanks for the help!!

Tony...seriously...you're happy with only one full day? This new phone was the second coming. "improved battery". My wife has the old phone and charges every two days.

Aqua mojo.. Yes I am happy with one full day considering the amount of time I spend on my phone... Ou cannot compare my battery life to your wife's since you do not know how much I use my phone for work. E-mails, phone calls, etc...

I logged on just to let everyone know that resetting my mail contacts fixed my battery problem, not to get into a discussion about why you are not happy with the battery life. If you don't like it go get a droid like I had before I got my iPhone and then you will see some real problems.

Hi: No, I did not try to replace it. What I did do was go into notifications and turn off a lot of stuff. Also, be sure to refuse push notifications. And turn off any location settings you don't need. I also use a Fastmac iV Pro batter charger/case. Depending on how much use I give the phone, it lasts between a day and two. If you go this route, be sure to charge the charger and phone separately. Otherwise it takes forever. I did not have a problem with the phone heating up, just the battery draining too fast.

About two weeks ago, I posted here complaining about the overheating and insane battery drain issues I was having with my iPhone 4S that I only had for like four months. It lasted two hours, even when idle, and it would get so hot that it was uncomfortable to hold. I had previously sent this phone in from another issue I had been having (it did not turn completely off... ever), but Apple claimed that my liquid indicator was on (which it was for some strange reason) and so my phone was no longer under warranty. They were unable to help me and sent it right back. I contacted Apple about the overheating and battery drain problem a few days after it started happening, told them the situation, and they happily sent me a replacement. I even mentioned the previous problem and how it was sent back to me because of the liquid indicator. For any of you experiencing the overheating and battery drain problem, I suggest you contact Apple... even if your phone is no longer under warranty. The overheating battery, especially to the point where it's uncomfortable to hold, is definitely a hazard and could even cause the battery to potentially explode (I heard about this happening to someone), so I bet they felt obligated to replace my phone.

I can confirm this. iPhone 4S heats up when RAM is getting low over time (hours sometimes minutes) for no apparent reason, despite no apps being open or being completely shut down. Reallocating memory with my battery utility frees memory and stops the heating and battery drain immediately.

So the code you mention would definitely fix this, it would have to reallocate and thus free up memory ever so often. Obviously it would even be better to find out why that RAM memory drain happens in first place. So far I could not find any tool or app which gives any diagnostic for this.

Hi

i upgraded my Apple Iphone and although it is the old Iphone 4, i am very disappointed in how bad the battery life is, i was keeping it in my pocket at about 100% and after not even 2 hours, i took it out and it was at 40%. i mean really this is disgraceful to the apple people. I now know that the recent Iphones (5,5S,5C) are improved with the battery life as my family have them, but i suggest after 2 years with the phone that, and this sound stupid but i found it helped it me, that you should try have a case on it, but not a metal case that you could get from any old shop, but a rubber one, or apple Iphone case.

I can confirm that all the supposed 'life saving apps' are just a gimmick and do not help the battery life at all! i hate to say it but apple better give the battery life problem a solution for more than just the recent iphones, otherwise they will lose not 1 devoted customer but 7 if they are not careful.
