iPhone 4 heat and battery issues

My iPhone 4 for the last few days has started to get very hot in use and the battery is gone very bad. Leaving the phone on standby can see the battery drain nearly 20% in an hour. This is gone to the stage where I have to turn it off at times just to save battery during the day. It only began to happen when I updated to iOS 4.3. I updated to iOS 4.3.1 yesterday and it still has the same issues. Anyone else having the same problem?

Often applications fail proper installation and a process can hang, causuing repetitive instruction calls (even in standby). With such a process continuously running on your iPhone, the battery drain can be significant - up to 25% or more in an hour. Here are a few solutions that have worked for me (it's happened to me on three separate handsets of the iPhone - especially the part about getting hot in standby):

1) Do a hard reset - Hold the home and sleep buttons down together for approximately 10 seconds until the phone turns off. Wait a few second, then repeat to turn it back on. THIS WILL NOT ERASE any of your data or lose any of your setting, rather just a flash memory reset.

2) If that does not solve the problem, follow this procedure:

1. Under Settings, go to Mail/Contacts/Calendar - tap the name of the

Exchange account. You will see 3 switches. Turn them off (repeat for

each account), then back out of Settings. Do not turn off PUSH; only turn

off the 3 switches. You may receive warning messages - go ahead and

accept these - this data will be restored from your accounts once the

switches are turned back on.

2. Open the apps one at a time, first Mail, then Contacts, then Calendar

so these apps apply the changes.

3. Hold the home button for a few seconds and close all multitasking apps,

4. Turn off your phone, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on,

5. Go back into Settings and turn the 3 switches back on.

Usually the hard reset will solve the problem on its own, but the mail reset may be necessary in cases where the mail application is causing the process error.

I have tried switching off these three buttons in Exchange and guess what? It has deleted all my 405 contacts! I want to forget about this battery problem temporary and find the way out to get my contacts back. Any suggestions? It is a brand new phone and I had just started using it for a month and had no back ups. Any idea how to restore the contacts?

P Vaya, have you ever stored your contacts in a Yahoo, Google, Outlook, etc. account? Did you ever sync your iPhone with your computer, if so, check if you are syncing you contacts as well. In the meantime, I suggest downloading a free app called "Contacts Sync" - go to the app store and search for "Critical Path" and it should be the first app with an icon that says "my." This is a free online service where you can create an account and store all of your contacts. I periodically go to the app and sync my contacts.

If my iPhone ever crashes, I can reformat it, install this app again, and recover all of my contacts without any issues!

I think I found what is causing the battery problem on my 4s. Today all of a sudden the battery started to drain like crazy. I check the system stats with a monitoring app I have and it said basically that there was not much free memory available. So I closed down all the apps I had opened and rechecked the memory usage still not much free memory available. I then did a hard reset and I rechecked the memory and had a lot available. The battery usage was back to normal with Wifi and Bluetooth on and reasonable phone usage I have more than enough battery to last the day with plenty to spare. So when there is little memory available I bet it pages to ram storage a lot and uses a lot of battery running the cpu at 100% constantly causing the heating. Since then the battery usage has been very low. So it looks like they need to add some code to recapture allocated memory once an app is closed.

This is my first time on this thread so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place.

In any event, I seem to be having a similar issue with my iPhone 4. I've noticed that it has begun to overheat even while performing the simplest tasks (checking email, SMS, etc.) and the battery life has decreased dramatically. Additionally, the phone has begun to repspond very slow after upgrading to iOS5. (I've made sure, since, to delete the OS file and download again, as to ensure a fresh copy overwrites the previous installation.)

A couple of months ago, I brought it to the store and was told by an employee there that it was probably just too dusty and proceeded to clean it with compressed air. He also refromatted/reinstalled the OS, which should have taken care of the problem. It didn't.

I was on the phone with Apple yesterday and was given the same instructions I have been given in the past (check email settings, close any running apps, backup and restore the OS, etc.) I've tried all these things to no avail. I was told to post here on the forum, as Apple engineers supposedly monitor the threads and provide support accordingly. I'm a bit hesitant as to whether or not this will yield positive results, as my opinion is that there may be something wrong with the hardware itself. It has gotten increasingly worse after installing iOS5, but maybe it's just a coincidence and the phone has been getting progressively worse with time.

Either way, I've gone through the forums and have seen some pretty good advice, but nothing I haven't tried already. I'm wondering really what your thoughts are on my theory that perhaps iOS5 is the culprit, whether this problem is inherent to the iPhone 4, or a combination of these.

Cheers!

Oh, I have another question. I'm thinking of purchasing the iPhone 4S, but I'm not sure whether I want to risk running into the same issues. Can anyone shed some light on whether or not the 4S has similar issues regarding battery life? If I do end up getting the 4S, I'd like to give my 4 to a family member, which is why I'm still adamant on finding a fix.

Have you tried completely resetting the phone to its original factory settings and wiping everything on it? Take a backup, then restore the phone to it's clean state. If the battery problem persists, it is the hardware. If it is better, then you can try adding things little by little: mail setup first, then settings, then apps, etc. and see if it's still OK. For me it was a matter of turning off exchange mail and turning it back on again. Hope you figure it out. As for your other question, I have heard of 4s having battery issues, likely caused by increased use of Siri and GPS services. Apple is reportedly releasing an iOS 5.0.1 update shortly that should fix some battery issues.

Thank you for your reply! I've already tried these steps, but the problem does persist. I was told that there might be some corruption in my files and that I should probably not restore from my backup.... not going to happen, as I need all my files.

I set up the email accounts from scratch again, but that didn't fix the problem either.

Hopefully the update fixes the issues. If not, I'll attempt to get a replacement, considering I do have the extended warranty.

Thansk again!
