iPhone 4 heat and battery issues

My iPhone 4 for the last few days has started to get very hot in use and the battery is gone very bad. Leaving the phone on standby can see the battery drain nearly 20% in an hour. This is gone to the stage where I have to turn it off at times just to save battery during the day. It only began to happen when I updated to iOS 4.3. I updated to iOS 4.3.1 yesterday and it still has the same issues. Anyone else having the same problem?

This solved the battery issues for me:-

- Go to Settings -> Location services -> System services

- Set "setting time zone" to off

Reduced my idle power consumption from 10% per hour to 2-4% per hour. Massive improvement.

Not had a problem with the phone becoming very hot. I've seen this on older iPhones and on other smartphones. Typically these things really make a phone heat up:

1. Using the smartphone as a portable WiFi hotspot. The phone has to work both cellular and WiFi radios hard and use the cpu to do the usual smartphone things too.

2. Using the GPS continuously for minutes at a time, e.g. for a fitness app or a rambling or outdoors app that is tracking the precise path followed.

Hi all,

thanks for all this posts and comments. I had the same issue, heat and battery drain, with my new IPhone 4, using 4.3.1IOS and then with IOS 5 the same thing. After apply all the thing mentioned here, i resolved with a very simple trick showed here: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-completely-close-out-running-applications-new- iphone-ios-4-377560/ I had all the apps opened since I bought the phone, so I was over processing the cpu and running out of memory.

I am an ex Blackberry and Android user, I love my Iphone, with this issue I was frustrated and worry but now solved I am very happy.

Best Regards.

I am going to repost my previous suggestion with a few updates:

Often applications fail proper installation and a process can hang, causuing repetitive instruction calls (even in standby). Lately, with iOS5 the issue has been related to the syncing of information with peoples email accounts and the repetitive data calls related to the updating and syncing with email servers. With such a process continuously running on your iPhone, the battery drain can be significant - up to 25% or more in an hour. Here are a few solutions that have worked for me in both iOS4 and iOS5 (it's happened to me on four separate handsets of the iPhone - especially the part about getting hot in standby):

1) Do a hard reset - Hold the home and sleep buttons down together for approximately 10 seconds until the phone turns off. Wait a few second, then repeat to turn it back on. THIS WILL NOT ERASE any of your data or lose any of your setting, rather just a flash memory reset.

2) If that does not solve the problem, follow this procedure:

1. Under Settings, go to Mail/Contacts/Calendar - tap the name of the

email account. You will see 3 switches (or more) dealing with email, notes, calendars, reminders, etc.. Turn them off (repeat for each account), then back out of Settings. Do not turn off or mess with features that deal with PUSH; only turn off the switches mentioned above. You may receive warning messages - go ahead and

accept these - this data will be restored from your accounts once the

switches are turned back on (assuming you have this information saved in your email account).

2. Open the apps one at a time, first Mail, then Contacts, then Calendar, then Reminders, so these apps apply the changes.

3. Hold the home button for a few seconds and close all multitasking apps by hold on of the apps for a sex seconds (until they all start shaking, then clicking on the small 'x' on each.

4. Turn off your phone, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on (by hold only the top power button and repeating to turn back on.

5. Go back into Settings and turn all of the switches back on for each account. Finally, go back into each application, email, calendar, notes, reminders, etc., to restore the data from the email servers.

Usually the hard reset will solve the problem on its own, but the mail reset may be necessary in cases where the mail application is causing the process error.

Good luck! :)

I absolutley agree. What's next form Apple? A suggestion to wear a tin foil hat to improve power? What really irks me is that weh you call Apple support, the techs act as iff it's the first time they have heard the complaint.

For the record, I did the upgrade 5.1 patch and the power is better...but NOWHERE near what they are touting as new and impoved. I've been an Iphone fan for years...but with what I've been going through with this issue, that Android is looking pretty good.

Fix it Apple. I'm DONE shuting things off and changing settings just so I can have power at the end of the day.

Brand new iPhone 4s 32GB black.

Subject: iPhone 4s getting hot in my pocket

Issue: Phone will be on stand-by mode in my pocket, with apps running or no apps running, and it gets VERY HOT for no reason. I will notice it as my leg feels really warm, and I pull the phone out and it's clearly draining the battery. I had 75% power, had it in my pocket for 30 minutes, it got severely hot, and I noticed the battery had drained to 20% (red with warning).

I noticed this a few times, but since I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, the problem seems to be worse.

I notice that much of the heat is concentrated in the lower right-hand portion of the side of the phone (metal part) under the mini-sim slot.

I have tried a hard and soft reboot. Issue still remains. I do NOT accept the solution of turning off push and micro-managing WiFi. I have all the same settings as my iPhone 3GS, and it was never an issue.

I am probably heading to the Genius bar within a few days.

I'm watching this conversation very carefully.

Gablebt...you are right on brother. Why should you have to compromise your setting to adapt to Apple's short comings? Ridiculous. I haven't noticed my phone getting warm...but then again, i didn't make the "battery saving" upgrade to 5.1. So far I haven't had the old "speaker phone" problem.

Fingers crossed. Good luck.

Like you, this is my 1st Apple 4x type of device (was a 3Gs die-hard) and I am very upset that this was NOT tested thoroughly as much as when products goes through the Apple certification process and scruntize your app if it can be approved or not through their 'Apple Testing Certification" process, they have allowed this VERY CRITICAL ISSUE to Slip through. Very sloppy testing!! It is totally unfair that we had to upgrade to an Useless upgrade that did NOT fix the issues. I am sure that upgrade was to fix OTHER issues that were Never mentioned in this blog. I am QA Tester too and do not like getting thrown under the bus, but i want to put a 1 star on the Upgrade 5.0.1! Really?! So I agree with your comment Lawrence Finch, that yes, PING or the Notifications ribbon that pulls down IS the true issue that will STOP the HEATING OF THE BATTERY and Apple figured it out later after the bogus upgrade 5.0.1 file. I did not know these allegations were published, but because I have had so many issues with my IOS 4s 64 Gb device, I had to test it myself. I was like that upgrade did not fix the main battery problem, and so i was like what is CONSTANTLY running and draining iphone device hot, until it is about to burn up, even with a thick OtterBox cover around it. it came to me, that freakin pull down Notification center. So if you turn off ALL the notification to applications that do NOT send any notifications, you will see that the battery will NO longer drain and your iPhone device will remain cool and the battery life is safe. I agree with EVERYONE who has experienced having "75% or more" of battery life, then less than 30 min later the battery drains down to 20%. But my concern is since iPhone's do not have backup batteries, is Apple willing to replace our devices since this issue has pratically burnt up the battery and possiblely damaging the device?

Nov 18, 2011 4:27 AM in response to colmulhall

What CONTINUES to amaze me is that we are talkingabout a device that, in many says, has increased are opportunity to enhance the social aspect of constant contact. Yet here we are on the Apple fourm discussing a problem that obviously affects many of the owners of their device, all having the same problems, and not one person representing Apple has responded....even with a "we feel your pain and are actively working on it."

WHen I went for my second trip to the Genius Bar, I first asked the tech is he had ever heard of this problem. He promply responded that he had not. At which point I pulled out my phone...and thank you Jesus...it failed on command. He then responded, well that's a first for me. At which point I pulled out all of the printed pages on this thread and the fifty-three pages on another.

Which is worse. Having it happen and not hearing from Apple? Or Apple being so tight lipped that they don't even keep their "genius's" up to speed. Very sad.....

Nov 18, 2011 5:02 AM in response to colmulhall

Hi everyone,

I have the same problem. And that gets me so angry. Even i don't touch my iphone4 the battery is running down. If i turned on 3G it gets worse. I wonder when Aplle will find any solution for that issue. I think the iphones 1st issue was battery problem and now it is terrible. Apple should find a solution before i hate it...

Nov 18, 2011 6:39 AM in response to Me4o

I agree with u me4o! All the hype of the freakin phone all to having to shut down running notifications, really is insane! Apple PR folks or major representatives need to address this craziness soon! We as consumers are not sure how this CRITICAL flaw will affect our health! This device has become our livelihoods! Sad to admit, iphone and devices like It are what we cannot live without! Apple I need you all address the issue publicly or written and then go back to test lab and figure out how fix this issue! This is jacked up!
