How do I stop the caller ID popping up when someone texts me?

Hi,

Just been given an iPhone 3 and am v frustrated as every time I receive a text the name of the person texting flashes up on the screen. I have worked out how to switch off the message preview but how do I switch off the name of the person texting?

iPhone3, iPhone OS 3.0

"I'm sorry, but that is not a satisfactory response. "

You asked. He answered.

". Does Apple think we need to respond to incoming text messages the second they arrive?"

There is now way to know what "Apple thinks", unless they announce it.

You can leave feedback for them at: http://www.apple.com/feedback

" Do they not think their iPhone could be used in a professional setting? "'

Absolutely:

"Among customers who use their smartphones primarily for business purposes, Apple ranks highest with a score of 803, followed by RIM BlackBerry (724)."

"- Apple's iPhone yesterday again took first place in J.D. Power and Associates' smartphone customer satisfaction rankings.

Thursday's announcement by J.D. Power was the iPhone's fifth consecutive win in the firm's semi-annual ratings."

I'm sorry, but that is not a satisfactory response. Remove a friend from your contacts, so that instead their phone # posts unnecessarily to your screen, and you're still forced to deal with the intruding popup?

The message should queue in the messaging app, period. Does Apple think we need to respond to incoming text messages the second they arrive? Do they not think their iPhone could be used in a professional setting?

Is there a work-around for this issue?

Thanks,
Keith

I sincerely apologize.

I'm just dumbstruck that I can't disable popups on this thing. I do not want to share personal information while at work. It's just a deal killer to me, and I REALLY like this phone, otherwise.

I mean, I just searched the AppStore for 'popup killer', and it returned a silly little game as the result!

Are they preventing developers from implementing a so-obvious solution that needs to 'be'?

Is this a 'jailbreak' thing, which probably means I would need to look elsewhere?

Thanks,
Keith

"I'm just dumbstruck that I can't disable popups on this thing"

None-the-less, it is very true.

"Are they preventing developers from implementing a so-obvious solution that needs to 'be'?"

Apps have to operate in their own sandbox. They cannot have control over iphone core functions/features. ANy change would have to come from Apple, NOT an app.

Again, you can leave feedback for Apple on the link twice given.

Thanks. I did use the form to submit a request.

Apps use core functionality like GPS, etc..I don't see how or why this could not be implemented. A business decision was clearly made to not allow SMS/MMS texts from being blocked. Email and Calendar can be blocked, but not text.

I'm just sitting here, exactly on the polar opposite side to that decision.

Thanks,
Keith

Just because you do not see it, does not make it any less true.

". A business decision was clearly made to not allow SMS/MMS texts from being blocked"

True.

"I'm just sitting here, exactly on the polar opposite side to that decision."

Reasonable. Leaving feedback as you did is the course of action to take.

I came over from the Droid 2. I left the Droid for Apple due to battery.

I just never thought such an obvious user control would be omitted.

Maybe I should hang out with better friends, but occasionally I will get texts from friends during the day. That's quite all right. So long as I only have to visit my text app to see the messages. Seeing them in a force-the-issue way is such a different way than how I would've gone about implementing this.

I got this phone a few days ago. Honestly, I'll probably just return it for the Thunderbolt.

I'm sorry but the response was very satisfactory keithroby, nothing is forcing you to immediately respond to a text. You can simply hit close if you don't want to read the text message at work. I get text messages and alerts all the time and I work in a very professional environment and have never had a single issue with people complaining. In meetings my phone is on vibrate so no one even knows.

If you don't like the phone simply return it, but coming on here and asking a question and then calling answers unacceptable is ridiculous. So the choice is deal with the Apple's provided notifications, complain to Apple, or buy another phone, but acting like a spoiled kid to a bunch of people trying to be helpful is absurd.

Hide SMS Previews

By default, when receiving an incoming text message, your iPhone kindly displays a preview of the message. Needless to say, this is a great way to publicize privileged information (or embarrass you in front of your mates with a sentimental text from your mum!)

To avoid such situations, head to Settings > Messages and toggle off Show Preview.
