10.6.7 upgrade and bluetooth keyboard/Magic trackpad

Since doing the upgrade to 10.6.7 i have issues with bluetooth keyboards/trackpads not being seen by the Mac Mini i own. I must fiddle around with the mouse and keyboard and EVENTUALLY it will be seen. This happens on boot every time. Once it is discovered, all works fine until the next boot.

I have deleted and added the devices to the bluetooth configuration, reset the sram, cleaned permissions, etc. Nothing has helped.

Any pointers to resolving this issue once and for all would be appreciated.

thanks

Not scared off, just frustrated using this dumb usb mouse that I have to keep stealing from the mac mini in the conference room.

I've gone so far as a reinstall and then applied 10.6.7 combo. I bought this refurb, would the hardware test on the apps disc give me any indication as to whether I am having the same issue as the others here with 10.6.7, or I just randomly have a bad bluetooth board?

No way any one here can tell what the results of running the hardware test will tell you from this distance. I suggest that running AHT might be a good starting place to find the solution to your problem.

Also if you just bought a refurb and suspect of have a bluetooth problem, I would think taking it back to Apple ASAP so that they are aware of your problem would be a good thing to do.

Well the weirdness continues on this for me. However yesterday the Bluetooth setup assistant stayed open even after discovering both the trackpad and keyboard. I just minimized it, however after a time the system completely humg causing me to have to hold down on the power button to restart. Weird thing is that after that restart eveything is now working! Very strange. I almost hate to repair permissions for fear of the problem returning.

It is also worth noting that this is only happening on my mini and not my two MBP machines.

My sister's iMac had this problem. She updated to 10.6.6 or 10.6.7. She cannot remember exactly but her Apple Wireless keyboard and Apple wireless mouse were rendered useless as Bluetooth was no longer available. A bizarre and inexcusable situation Apple.

She resorted to an old Microsoft keyboard in the meantime.

Later, these actions seemed to have solved the problem for her at least.

1. Back up iMac to External Hard Drive.

2. Clean install with OS X 10.5.4 using discs that came with iMac plus an erase of the iMac hard drive.

3. Update OS X 10.5.4 to OS X 10.5.8 using combo update.

4. Perform two software updates to catch other OS X relevant files needed for OS X 10.5.8 (Security updates mainly).

5. Perform Apple Wireless Keyboard Update 2.0

6. Reset the SMC/PMU

7. Reset the PRAM

8. Boot to Safe Mode

9. Fix Permissions

10. Restart

11. Switch Bluetooth on in System Preferences

12. Paired the Apple Wireless Keyboard

13. Restart

14. Paired the Apple Wireless Mouse

15. Restart

16. Installed and updated iLife 9

17. Restored backup up of documents, music and pictures.

18. Boot to Safe Mode

19. Fix Permissions once more for good measure

20. Restart

21. Cup of tea.

Essentially, we rolled her iMac back to OS X 10.5.8. That was the last time her iMac ran consistently and smoothly. Drastic action yes, but she needs that iMac for her studies.

MacFixit has a good rundown on maintenance routines here:

Apple needs to get its act together with this issue.

I'm having the same issue. I have a mac mini 1.6. I installed 10.6.7 and now my keyboard and magic mouse do not register when I boot up. I have to turn off my mouse and turn it on at the time the mac is looking for a mouse. Then, it says it can't find a keyboard. I proceed to press the keyboard button until it finds it again and pairs with it. I believe this to be a bug in the osx 10.6.7 update concerning older supported mac models. I think apple needs to look in to this. I'm guessing they are and will deal with it in the Lion update. I wish they would fix this problem now because it's slowing down my productivity.

As a side note, I ran the keyboard system setting and the computer says it can't discover a keyboard. However, as it searches for a bluetooth keyboard I was able to use the Bluetooth keyboard to write this thread. Apparently, there is a real bug in the os.
