I'm not convinced its a router problem. Both of my units were working fine ever since I got therm and it's only been in the last few days, since I had them updated, that they started dropping libraries. There have been no changes to my router.

Also, both ATVs can still stream off the internet even when they have dropped the libraries and both of my computers can detect eachother's libraries. It seems like its an issue with the ATVs but I'm having a tough time thinking its a hardware issue since both ATVs are having the same problem.

Which software version are you running on the ATV ?

Which version of iTunes are you running ? Are you on Snow Leopard or Lion ?

I'll check the numbers against what I have.

  • joeb1knobi Level 1 Level 1

    Running Lion on both Macs

    itunes is 10.4.1

    Apple TV is 4.3 (2557)

  • Jeet K Level 1 Level 1

    That's exactly what I have.

Did you run a software update on the Macs or on the ATVs ?

  • joeb1knobi Level 1 Level 1

I have the ATVs on auto update which ran a few days ago, I think.

As far as I know, these are the most current updates for itunes and atv.

You could try, in this order:

    a) re-starting iTunes

    b) re-starting the router

    c) restoring the factory settings on the ATV.

This is pretty much what Apple support asked me to do when I called them.

Note that the last option will mean that you will have to re-connect to your wi-fi network and re-enter you NetFlix username/password.

  • joeb1knobi Level 1 Level 1

Did any of these fix your problem permanently?

    I've done a and b and can try c.....

  • Jeet K Level 1 Level 1

No - because in my case it turned out to be the router.

Not sure if option (c) will work for you because once it's finished, the restore process will install the latest software update (which seems to be the cause of your problem in the first place). I don't know if it will allow you to go back to the software version you had when you got the ATV.

I've had that version of the ATV software for some time and I haven't had any problems with it.

It's a difficult problem to diagnose; all I can suggest is changing the router. Something in the latest update may have caused a handshaking problem.

I hope I don't have to replace the router. The one I have is really new and somewhat pricey. I'd hate to have to replace a router everytime my ATV has an issue following an apple update.

I'll try restoring to factory settings and see how that goes.

As mentioned on some similar threads about "Apple TV streaming drop out"...

Those events are often connected to other network issues like wifi cut off, lousy file transfer speed, bad Internet connection and so on.

In most cases these issues are not related to Apple TV, iTunes or DLNA-Server's because it's mostly a network issue regardless of wireless or wired.

Check your router logs for similar entry's at the time of a drop out:

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5    Idle timeout for station 00:1e:....

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5   Disassociating with station 00:1e:....

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5    Disassociated with station 00:1e:...

Check station's (Express / A-TV) logs for time matching similar entry's like:

Aug 22 10:54:30    Severity: 4    "xyz" stream from fe80:.... stopped.

Aug 22 11:04:22    Severity: 5    Disconnected from network.

    Aug 22 11:04:49    Severity: 5    Joined BSS b8:c7:.....

Aug 22 11:04:49    Severity: 5    Installed unicast CCMP key for authenticator b8:c7:....

If you have entry's like that in the logfiles at the time the stream drop:

    • Troubleshoot your network on settings, infrastructure, interferences and so on.

Even if a problem sound similar to your's it's definitively different to other's problem.

Open your own question about your problem in the network branch (or other matching one) of the community and describe your problem as good as you can. Give all information about your network you have and think it could be useful for others to help you solving your problem.

This will ease your pain and let you enjoy your videos without anger about drop out's.

I've checked the logs and there aren't any of the alerts you are suggesting.

I have a hard time thinking it's a router issue. It's new, and been working with ATV for the past 8 months. It's only been an issue since the 4.3 update. I work from home and am on the compute most of the day and never experience any drop outs and I pay the extra money for increased bandwidth so I don't think transfer speed is it. Besides, the issue isn't with movies pausing or not loading. ATV isn't picking up my shared library even though homesharing is on and we are on the same network.

The new varialbe in the equation is the software update...not the router.

    Good news.

That eases the process a lot.

I will give a detailed answer later, cause I have to leave now.

This has definately got to do with the latest update/s. I was running perfectly on a wired connection for months until I installed the latest update on ATV2 & my iMac (Lion). It seems that pretty much every time I try to watch something the connection to iTunes is lost, restart the ATV or Turn Home Sharing off, then back on and it works again. You get on average about 45mins out of it before you lose the share again and have to do the process again.

Note I am on a wired connection so wifi interferance is out of the question. Hoping a fix comes sooner than later, is getting quite annoying having to get up mid programme to either restart the ATV or iTunes library.

I think the problem with iTunes. If you turn off and turn on Home Sharing, again working. How do I know this problem is known to Apple? Or we should like to tell you?

  • Dan5718 Level 1 Level 1

You are correct......If you turn off and turn on Home Sharing, again it works.....Thanks.
