Keys falling off new MacBook Pro 15" (2011)

Is anybody having an issue with keys falling off? I've already had the Apple Store replace the 'E' key, and now the '[' is falling off. It seems the plastic hooks on the underside are breaking. I'm a software developer so I do quite a bit of typing but I've only had this computer for less than 2 months. (it's one of the new MacBook Pros, 2011) I just upgraded from a MacBook 13" that I had for 2 years with no issues at all with the keys.

I'm almost inclined to ask to have the entire keyboard replaced. Thoughts?

I have the EXACT same problem. I just got a 15" Macbook pro for Christmas 2011 and my "E" key keeps unhinging. The (it actually just popped of mid post right now) key seems to unhinge from the right side of the key and is still connected to the left. Is there a certain wiggle technique to get to to re hinge?

On another note I've found out that holding down keys on the keyboard opens up an accent menu for the letter! A very cool feature Apple, but having the key fall off isnt really the best way to get us to find this out. 😉

It probably won't rehinge...little plastic tabs on back are broken. You need to go to an Apple Store if you have one nearby or call Apple if you don't and get a new one put on. I made a Genius Bar appointment and they did it on the spot while I waited. Did claim that it wasn't a common issue and they had never seen it before....hmmm.

Not getting accents out of my keyboard by holding down buttons...are you just holding down the letter, or do you need to hold down the Option button or something else too?

Thanks for the help. Theres a new Apple store 5 miles from my house 🙂

I was just being a smartass regarding the accent letters haha. When I pushed the dislodged key back into it's slot, the accent marks for the letters came up. Didn't know that happened. And it was joking saying that I wish apple would have just told me about how holding the keys would bring up the accent marks rather than them sending me a faulty key to figure it out. 😀

Thanks for the help though

i've literally had my macbook pro for maybe two weeks, and i've used it only a couple times... and the + = fell off tonight. at first i couldn't get it back on, but it end up going back in place. should i simply ignore it, now that it's back in place, or should i go to the apple store or have it looked into? after reading the former posts about similar (and reoccuring) issues, it doesn't seem like something to just be ignored.

Have had my MacBook Pro 13 for literally 48 hours and the enter key is broken and completly fell off. when i looked at it i noticed that one of the clips has snapped off, I'm off to local apple store hopefully they will fix it for me there and then because i need my macbook to do some uni work and can't afford to lose time while it gets shipped away!!

Bought my MacBook Pro 15" in January and about a month later one of my arrow keys fell off. I barely even used it so i took it to the genius bar and they fixed it. Then, about 3 months later ANOTHER arrow key fell off and so I repeated the process. As we speak, my "return" key is coming off. It's still on there so I'm careful how I type but I've already made another Genius Bar appointment. Unbelievable. The computer is fantastic and the software is top notch (i won't ever go back to PC) but for almost 2 grand, i'd expect better hardware than anything some sweatshop turns out. Thank god for warranty, is all I can say. 3 Genius Bar appointments in 8 months is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

It looks as though all of us experiencing this issue own a Macbook from 2011.
I've now lost 3 keys (R, T, U) and some of them look scratched (?!). I know it's not me because I was able to resell my older Macbook Air after 5yrs in mint condition.
I've consulted the Apple store (in Canada), and it'd cost me $350 to replace the entire keyboard (!!!), which doesn't come with guarantees that I won't be having the same issue again. I'm not prepared to spend that amount of money. I bet this was a hardware problem that Apple just didn't feel like addressing.
