Blu Ray problems with 10.6.7

I am using the Buffalo Media Center external USB blu ray player on my Mac Pro. I use MakeMKV and Pavtube Blu-ray ripper stictly to make personal copies and MKV files of my BD movies. And yes, I know that Apple doesn't not officially support Blu Ray.

With 10.6.6 both programs took less than an hour to process a 45 gig BD. Since upgrading to 10.6.7, both programs give an estimated time of over 4 hours to process the same BD.

Any ideas of what has changed in 10.6.7 to explain this and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Jerry

What version MakeMKV? I currently use 1.6.5, have an LG Bluray
drive in a Bytecc enclosure connected via USB to my MacMini. I am
running OSX 10.6.7 and usually get a .mkv in about 30-40 minutes.
That does not include conversion (just putting desired tracks into the
.mkv container). How long does your MakeMKV process take?

As for Pavtube, that is a program whose core is the same as about
a dozen other programs, just has a different skin. I had the iSkysoft rip of it
and had issues pretty much any time something changed in the system.

Gave up with it, went to Handbrake and never looked back! It's a little
slower, but quality was a lot better. It's also free. (does require VLC for
some odd reason, but it is also free.)

I sent an email over to PavTube about this and they responded that it is a problem with 10.6.7 and they are working on an update to resolve. The tech also said that some users experience the slow down with 10.6.6 as well. I didn't find this to be so as I was able to crunch a bluray in about 1:45 on my machine.. now it takes 6-8 hours.

I tried Handbrake but it can sometimes take 2 hours just to scan the chapters so I am hoping there is a fix soon. Either way I don't think this is an Apple problem, but a PavTube problem they will need to resolve....

The long scan time is not normal. Longest I can recall a scan to take

and try again.

I must be blind, because I don't see an advanced setting in the prefs for PavTube or MakeMKV. What am I missing?

The third party developers should really test their apps well before new version release. Apple did provide them beta version to test. Even Adobe products encounter issues like fonts display in 10.6.7, frustrating.

However, I think the problem exists generally in OS X 10.6.7 because it takes much longer to transfer files from DVD to Hard Disk without any third party apps.

I just met the same case as a long time Pavtube user.
I own several Pavtube programs like Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper for Mac, Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac and also their latest released Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac.
Previously all these apps ran flawlessly on my MacBook from 10.6.4 all the way to 10.6.6.
However all Pavtube apps now slow down somehow on my 10.6.7. It now takes 3 hours+ to rip a BD while previously only 1 hour or so. Converting DVD and downloaded movie has no problem.

Don't want to give up Pavtube as I really like their apps and their customer support.
Will check back again with their tech support to see what their progress is now.
If any body on this thread could also find a solution pls don't hesitate to share with us 🙂

I thought you were referring to scans of DVDs. Also, if you are
trying to read protected blurays into Handbrake, that won't work.
Handbrake does not support protected blurays.

If you were referring to DVDs, then there is some other issue
going on that isn't obvious. You may want to check out the
Handbrake forums, or post your issue there. Here's the link:
https://forum.handbrake.fr/

Also, if it is a DVD problem, try playing the DVD in VLC. It could be a problem
with it since Handbrake somehow uses VLC for decoding.

Just got a feedback from Pavtube, unfortunately they still haven't found an effective solution yet 😟
The reply from their tech as below:
+"The slow-down problem is much more obvious if you use the "Full Disk Copy" function.+
+But if you convert to mp4, mov, etc there shall be no much problem.+
+Previously it only takes 1 hour or less to copy a full disc, but now according to our own tests, it takes 3hrs 16 minutes on our iMac with 10.6.7.+
+On our another iMac with 10.6.6 the speed is also slow with 3hrs 8 minutes.+

+According to our tests, it seems Apple changed something in Mac OSX 10.6.7 or 10.6.6 for the support of blu-ray.+
+Even copying a file, say, the PLAYLIST file directly from the blu-ray disc (without any third party software) to Mac desktop it now takes a very long time.+
+It seems Mac OSX 10.6.7 is restricting the copy speed.+
+Pavtube uses the Mac OSX's API to read the blu-ray Rom, so it will inevitably restricted by Mac OSX's copy speed.+
+Not sure if there's any way not to use Mac OSX's API to read the disc but through some other ways.+
+We're keeping researching on the case. Apologize for bringing you the inconvenience!"+

I also asked if the downgrade of my Mac OSX might help, but they cannot be assured about that.
I think I might have a try if that helps.

I have recently (yesterday) done a full BD disk backup with MakeMKV and
OSX 10.6.7 on my MacMini and it was no slower than in 10.6.6.
Actually it may have been a bit quicker. It doesn't seem to me
that OSX is restricting speed in any way. Now I am using
a BD drive in an external enclosure via USB. But at that, I
get 36 gig of content in about 30 minutes. That is about
20 Megabytes a second or 160 megabits which is getting close
to USB limitations, or maybe BD reader. Never really understood
the 2x, 4x etc. stuff.

(Although USB 2.0 says 480 megabit/second, actual throughput
at this rate is never achieved because of the protocol. The fastest
hard drives will only max out at about 240 megabit/second)

I also tested MakeMKV, very easy to use. But it lacks some features I need in Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac - recoding to H.264 video with dvdsubs while keeping a smaller file size. Is there anything I can adjust in MakeMKV so that I can have the similar features? I think MakeMKV only pakage the source disc into MKV container. The generated mkv file by MakeMKV is too large same as the source disc (40GB-50GB), very challenging for my little 100GB HDD; Also my old WDTV only supports dvdsubs, the blu-ray PGS subtitles by MakeMKV cannot be displayed on my screen.

About the speed, on my iMac 10.6.7 it took 01:11:03 to finishing my Sideways blu-ray that I bought from Japan. Well, 30 minutes seems impossible for me. Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac took 01:32:06 for the same disc. No much big difference as you can see. But I really hope 30 minutes could be possible for me.
