Blu Ray problems with 10.6.7

I am using the Buffalo Media Center external USB blu ray player on my Mac Pro. I use MakeMKV and Pavtube Blu-ray ripper stictly to make personal copies and MKV files of my BD movies. And yes, I know that Apple doesn't not officially support Blu Ray.

With 10.6.6 both programs took less than an hour to process a 45 gig BD. Since upgrading to 10.6.7, both programs give an estimated time of over 4 hours to process the same BD.

Any ideas of what has changed in 10.6.7 to explain this and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Jerry

I just purchased PavTube's ByteCopy for the Mac.

The same slowdown with 10.6.7 that we found with their BD Ripper program exists with ByteCopy.

It took 30 minutes to make an MKV file on 10.6.6. With 10.6.7 is took 2 hours.

I don't buy their explanation of 10.6.7 restricting copy speed from a BD disk. If so, why doesn't MakeMKV also suffer the same slowdown?

I also own MakeMKV. It's a fine program. But PavTube's program have some features I desire that MakeMKV doesn't have.

I cannot recommend PavTube's programs for the Mac for anyone running 10.6.7 until these issues are fixed.

The PavTube folks are correct. This does appear to be an Apple issue. Doing a finder copy from an external Blu Ray drive takes about 5 times as long in 10.6.7 as it does in 10.6.6.

I think we and PavTube are cooked. I'm afraid that trying to convince Apple that there is a BD problem in 10.6.7 and getting a fix is going to be nearly impossible.

Between this and Mac App Store problem with 10.6.7 ( I can't download anything) I really regret going from 10.6.6 to 10.6.7.

What BD drives do you people have? There are some instances where the

controller chips used by some of the drives are notoriously problematic.

Yesterday, I used MakeMKV to backup 4 of my BD's and the transfer rates

were always around 18-20 megabytes per second. I also tried what one of you

had mentioned and just did a simple file copy in the finder. This transfer

was also at a similar rate.

So, what some may have is a hardware compatibility issue. As reference,

I am using an LG BH10LS30 in a BYTECC enclosure and using the USB

interface.

Also as an aside, when it comes to software, be it OSX or Windows for that matter,

it is up to the software vendors to insure that they follow proper coding guidelines

set forth by the operating system vendors to insure that their software

is compatible.

Welcome onboard to 10.6.6 🙂

I am afraid I'll stick to 10.6.6 till I can find any good reason to go forward.

The Pavtube guy told me the other day that Apple seems to reduce the BD reading speed deliberately so that people like us could give up the Blu-ray discs and all go to iTunes Store.

According to Pavtube's testing, Mac OSX 10.6.6's BD reading speed (via external BD drive) can reach to 10MB/s while on 10.6.7 it dramatically reduces to 3MB/s which is only capable of DVD reading.

If this is true I think Apple is only bringing inconveniences to its users by updating the system.

Movie collectors like me cannot be beaten down by the machine.

Yeah - I'm not sure about that I'll check later, but as with Woodmeister50 I have a BH10LS30 drive, (internal and connected via SATA to a spare port on the motherboard), and don't seem to have the issue you do.

Just remember, you collect the hardware, ie the disc, the movie that is on it you on it license. They have a right to make it hard work for you, (unless you own the rights to it).

I believe that the movie manufacturers have the right to protect their intellectual property, But I also believe that consumers have the right to enjoy fully the property they paid for. :-)

Unfortunately the consumer can believe what he likes. This next point is a fact;

The movie on that VCD/DVD/Blu-Ray is licensed which means you have limited 'enjoyment' rights if you do not own the rights.

I suspect that you, I and many others all know this prior to purchasing. You cannot enjoy fully something that does not belong to you. But yes, it would be nice to have unequivocal endorsement to backup/reproduce broadcast etc.

😉

Your payment here doesn't give you carte blanche.

I don't believe for a second that Apple intentionally slowed up BD reading.

Let's not forget that BD is also a data storage media and a way to hold your own non copy protected movies. Toast Titanium has BD support built in to make your own movies. If you copy a file from a BD movie using the Finder, does the finder know it's a copy protected? Or that it's not copy protected. It's just a file being copied by the Finder.

And this process is significantly slower with 10.6.7. Folks, this is a bug in 10.6.7. It has NOTHING to do with copy protection, the movie studios, or some plot by Apple to force us to use iTunes.

I just got an update from tech support at Pavtube and they said they have been alerted that Apple is treating this slow down as a bug.. which is good news. The bad news is there's no timeline for a fix, but at least they are aware and working on it with Pavtube.

Again, to restore the speed all you need to do is downgrade to 10.6.6. Fairly painless and sure a lot faster than waiting 8 hours to copy a bluray...
