Blu Ray problems with 10.6.7

I am using the Buffalo Media Center external USB blu ray player on my Mac Pro. I use MakeMKV and Pavtube Blu-ray ripper stictly to make personal copies and MKV files of my BD movies. And yes, I know that Apple doesn't not officially support Blu Ray.

With 10.6.6 both programs took less than an hour to process a 45 gig BD. Since upgrading to 10.6.7, both programs give an estimated time of over 4 hours to process the same BD.

Any ideas of what has changed in 10.6.7 to explain this and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Jerry

Here is an interesting quirk I ran into today. I was copying

a very large file this morning from the internal HDD to a

Firewire HDD and was only getting a transfer rate of

5 megabytes per second. My Blu-Ray drive was connected

via USB and powered but had no disk in it. I powered down

the Blu-Ray, and my Firewire transfer jumped to 50 megabytes

per second.

So, there is some sort of odd I/O bug going on. I may try

the same thing with a USB HDD instead of the Blu-Ray

and see if the same thing happens.

As for those who think this was a conspiracy to kill Blu-Ray

use on Macs, I mean really!! If that was the case, there would

be no Blu-Ray capabilities on Macs period!!!!

We just cannot be beaten down by the machine. That's why I support applications like Pavtube. We all know Apple has no intention to support Blu-ray, but really hope Apple can leave us the last piece of room to make Blu-ray playback possible, indirectly.

In response to gumsie, I fully respect intellectual property right. Ripping for personal entertainment only :-)

For everyone's information, Sony owns the licensing rights to Blu-Ray and they have not extended a license to Apple.

Again, for everyone's information: ripping is ripping. Laws are in place in this country; however, they are not always fully enforced by some and questioned by others. Other countries have far more restrictive laws in place. Irregardless, according to the ToU here, we are not allowed to discuss it:

Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.

Apple DOES support Blu-Rays. You ARE able to

read and write DATA to Blu-Ray media from OSX.

There is just no Blu-Ray movie disk playback

support from OSX.

Also, WINDOWS DOES NOT SUPPORT BLU-RAY

MOVIE PLAYBACK EITHER!!! YOU ARE REQUIRED

TO BUY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE FOR THIS FUNCTION.

They rather emphatically state this in the Windows FAQ as the

licensing for movie playback would add to much to the

cost of Windows. Why not complain about that as well!!!

To date, no one has written software like Total Media Theater

or PowerDVD (Blu-Ray capable players) for Macs, which is

all that is required to get the "Blu-Ray Experience".

I also agree with babowa in that ripping is ripping and is illegal.

Copying of any movie in any form from a DVD or BD is against

the law in the US and most other countries. It does not matter

that you bought it. One may disagree with that, but that does

not change the law.

I agree... this is not the forum for discussing how to accomplish ripping etc.. the whole point if for apple users who have encountered a problem to have place to discover whether other users are running up against a same problem or not and figure out a viable solution. In this particular case, BluRay reading performance for whatever reason has been affected by the 10.6.7 update, it is resolved by downgrading to 10.6.6 and Apple has acknowledged to one of it's developers that it is logging it as a bug... end of story. All those looking for a solution now.. have found it.

I know I am thankful for these forums for helping me find my way through problems I can't solve on my own. Let's keep it on the up and up!
